Sea-ice diatoms are known to accumulate in large aggregates in and under sea ice and in melt ponds. There is recent evidence from the Arctic that such aggregates can contribute substantially to particle export when sinking from the ice. The role and regulation of microbial aggregation in the highly seasonal, nutrient- and light-limited Arctic sea-ice ecosystem is not well understood. To elucidate the mechanisms controlling the formation and export of algal aggregates from sea ice, we investigated samples taken in late summer 2011 and 2012, during two cruises to the Eurasian Basin of the Central Arctic Ocean. Spherical aggregates densely packed with pennate diatoms, as well as filamentous aggregates formed by Melosira arctica showed sign of different stages of degradation and physiological stoichiometries, with carbon to chlorophyll a ratios ranging from 110 to 66700, and carbon to nitrogen molar ratios of 8–35 and 9–40, respectively. Sub-ice algal aggregate densities ranged between 1 and 17 aggregates m−2, maintaining an estimated net primary production of 0.4–40 mg C m−2 d−1, and accounted for 3–80% of total phototrophic biomass and up to 94% of local net primary production. A potential factor controlling the buoyancy of the aggregates was light intensity, regulating photosynthetic oxygen production and the amount of gas bubbles trapped within the mucous matrix, even at low ambient nutrient concentrations. Our data-set was used to evaluate the distribution and importance of Arctic algal aggregates as carbon source for pelagic and benthic communities.  相似文献

1. Data on submerged and floating-leafed macrophytes, phytoplankton, nutrients (N, P) and calcium were collected from twenty-four small lakes ( 1 km2) over a wide range of latitudes in Norway. The majority of the investigated lakes were mesotrophic or eutrophic, and most of the lakes were markedly affected by diffuse and point-source runoff from agriculture. According to their macrophyte species composition, the majority of the lakes can be classified as Potamogeton lakes or Chara lakes, or a combination of these.
2. This study is consistent with the 'two alternative stable states' hypothesis. We observed clearwater lakes with dense macrophyte cover over a wider range of total P concentration than has been reported previously: from 30 to more than 700 mg P m–3. The clearwater state was only observed in lakes with mean depths of less than 1.9 m.
3. Most clear lakes with high cover of submerged vegetation showed indications of N limitation.
4. In this study nearly all the macrophyte-dominated lakes with P concentrations above 30 mg m–3 had dense stands of Ceratophyllum demersum (L.). This indicates that Ceratophyllum may also play an important role in stabilizing and maintaining a clearwater state at high P concentrations.  相似文献

Simple methods are described for
  • a) absolute calibration of thermal radiation detectors (thermopiles, bolometers);
  • b) absolute calibration at various wavelengths of photoelectric devices;
  • c) obtaining the relative spectral sensitivity of the detector systems of spectrofluorimeters.
The procedures require no special standard lamp or other exotic equipment. The methods depend on the computation of the radiation characteristics of an ordinary tungsten lamp at various measured voltages and currents.  相似文献

1. Life history traits play a central role in adaptation to specific environmental conditions. Egg development time, hatchling, and egg batch size in 10 populations of the soil‐dwelling collembolan species Folsomia quadrioculata (Tullberg, 1871) from diverse habitats across arctic and temperate regions, ranging in latitude from 43 to 81°N were studied. 2. For all traits, 15 °C was used as the reference temperature. Phenotypic plasticity was studied by changing temperature to 10 and 20 °C in hatchling size, and to 20 °C in egg development time. The effect of latitude, climatic zone, and summer temperature at their sites of sampling was tested to address the hypotheses that populations from cooler areas would have (i) a faster temperature‐dependent egg development, (ii) a larger hatchling size, (iii) smaller egg batches and (iv) higher phenotypic plasticity 3. The first and fourth hypothesis were not supported, whereas the second and third were partly supported when including the whole latitudinal gradient, but not within regions. Plasticity showed a complex pattern, including large differences between populations from similar macroclimates and considerable similarity between some populations from contrasting climates. Small effects of latitude and macroclimatic variables emphasised that local climate and microhabitat should be taken into account when evaluating thermal conditions as possible drivers of population‐specific differences in soil‐dwelling ectotherms. 4. There was a trade‐off between egg batch and hatchling sizes. A weak correlation between the population mean egg development time and the mean hatchling size suggested that the populations are, or have been, exposed to differential selection.  相似文献

Predictions on the consequences of the rapidly increasing atmospheric CO2 levels and associated climate warming for population dynamics, ecological community structure and ecosystem functioning depend on mechanistic energetic models of temperature effects on populations and their interactions. However, such mechanistic approaches combining warming effects on metabolic (energy loss of organisms) and feeding rates (energy gain by organisms) remain a key, yet elusive, goal. Aiming to fill this void, we studied the metabolic rates and functional responses of three differently sized, predatory ground beetles on one mobile and one more resident prey species across a temperature gradient (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 °C). Synthesizing metabolic and functional‐response theory, we develop novel mechanistic predictions how predator–prey interaction strengths (i.e., functional responses) should respond to warming. Corroborating prior theory, warming caused strong increases in metabolism and decreases in handling time. Consistent with our novel model, we found increases in predator attack rates on a mobile prey, whereas attack rates on a mostly resident prey remained constant across the temperature gradient. Together, these results provide critically important information that environmental warming generally increases the direct short‐term per capita interaction strengths between predators and their prey as described by functional‐response models. Nevertheless, the several fold stronger increase in metabolism with warming caused decreases in energetic efficiencies (ratio of per capita feeding rate to metabolic rate) for all predator–prey interactions. This implies that warming of natural ecosystems may dampen predator–prey oscillations thus stabilizing their dynamics. The severe long‐term implications; however, include predator starvation due to energetic inefficiency despite abundant resources.  相似文献

Interactions between saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal fungi have been largely ignored, although their mycelia often share the same microsites. The mycelial systems show general similarity to each other and, although the enzymatic potential of the saprotrophic fungi is generally considered to be higher, the importance of organic nutrient sources to ectomycorrhizal fungi is now widely accepted. In the experiments described here, nutritional interactions involving transfer of elements from one mycelium to the other have been monitored dynamically using radioactive tracers and a non-destructive electronic autoradiography system. Microcosms were used in which mycelial systems of the ectomycorrhizal fungi Suillus variegatus and Paxillus involutus , extending from Pinus sylvestris host plants, were confronted with mycelia of the saprotroph Hypholoma fasciculare extending from wood blocks. The fungi showed a clear morphological confrontation response. The mycorrhizal mycelium often formed dense patches over the Hypholoma mycelia. Up to 25% of the 32P present in the Hypholoma mycelium was captured by the mycorrhizal fungi and translocated to the plant host within 30 d. The transfer of 32P to the saprotroph from labelled mycorrhizal mycelium was one to two orders of magnitude lower. The significance of this transfer as a 'short cut' in nutrient cycling is discussed.  相似文献

The photosynthetic performance of an epilithic cyano-bacterial biofilm was studied in relation to the in situ light field by the use of combined microsensor measurements of O2, photosynthesis, and spectral scalar irradiance. The high density of the dominant filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria sp.) embedded in a matrix of exopolymers and bacteria resulted in a photic zone of < 0.7 mm. At the biofilm surface, the prevailing irradiance and spectral composition were significantly different from the incident light. Multiple scattering led to an intensity maximum for photic light (400–700 nm) of ca. 120% of incident quantum irradiance at the biofilm surface. At the bottom of the euphotic zone in the biofilm, light was attenuated strongly to < 5–10% of the incident surface irradiance. Strong spectral signals from chlorophyll a (440 and 675 nm) and phycobilins (phycoerythrin 540–570 nm, phycocyanin 615–625 nm) were observed as distinct maxima in the scalar irradiance attenuation spectra in the upper 0.0–0.5 mm of the biofilm. The action spectrum for photosynthesis in the cyanobacterial layer revealed peak photosynthetic activity at absorption wavelengths of phycobilins, whereas only low photosynthesis rates were induced by light absorption of carotenoids (450–550 nm). Respiration rates in light- and dark-incubated biofilms were determined using simple flux calculations on measured O2 concentration profiles and photosynthetic rates. A significantly higher areal O2 consumption was found in illuminated biofilms than in dark-incubated biofilms. Although photorespiration accounted for part of the increase, the enhanced areal O2 consumption of illuminated biofilms could also be ascribed to a deeper oxygen penetration in light as well as an enhanced volumetric O2 respiration in and below the photic zone. Gross photosynthesis was largely unaffected by increasing flow velocities, whereas the O2 flux out of the photic zone, that is, net photosynthesis, increased with flow velocity. Consequently, the amount of produced O2 consumed within the biofilm decreased with increasing flow velocity. Our data indicated a close coupling of photosynthesis and respiration in biofilms, where the dissolved inorganic carbon requirement of the photo-synthetic population may largely be covered by the respiration of closely associated populations of heterotrophic bacteria consuming a significant part of the photosynthetically produced oxygen and organic carbon.  相似文献

Kuechler, R.R., Birgel, D, Kiel, S, Freiwald, A, Goedert, J.L., Thiel, V & Peckmann, J. 2011: Miocene methane‐derived carbonates from southwestern Washington, USA and a model for silicification at seeps. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 259–273. Exotic limestone masses with silicified fossils, enclosed within deep‐water marine siliciclastic sediments of the Early to Middle Miocene Astoria Formation, are exposed along the north shore of the Columbia River in southwestern Washington, USA. Samples from four localities were studied to clarify the origin and diagenesis of these limestone deposits. The bioturbated and reworked limestones contain a faunal assemblage resembling that of modern and Cenozoic deep‐water methane‐seeps. Five phases make up the paragenetic sequence: (1) micrite and microspar; (2) fibrous, banded and botryoidal aragonite cement, partially replaced by silica or recrystallized to calcite; (3) yellow calcite; (4) quartz replacing carbonate phases and quartz cement; and (5) equant calcite spar and pseudospar. Layers of pyrite frequently separate different carbonate phases and generations, indicating periods of corrosion. Negative δ13Ccarbonate values as low as ?37.6‰ V‐PDB reveal an uptake of methane‐derived carbon. In other cases, δ13Ccarbonate values as high as 7.1‰ point to a residual, 13C‐enriched carbon pool affected by methanogenesis. Lipid biomarkers include 13C‐depleted, archaeal 2,6,10,15,19‐pentamethylicosane (PMI; δ13C: ?128‰), crocetane and phytane, as well as various iso‐ and anteiso‐carbon chains, most likely derived from sulphate‐reducing bacteria. The biomarker inventory proves that the majority of the carbonates formed as a consequence of sulphate‐dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane. Silicification of fossils and early diagenetic carbonate cements as well as the precipitation of quartz cement – also observed in other methane‐seep limestones enclosed in sediments with abundant diatoms or radiolarians – is a consequence of a preceding increase of alkalinity due to anaerobic oxidation of methane, inducing the dissolution of silica skeletons. The following basic growth parameters of the ammonoid shell are analysed: radius of the coiling spiral; whorl width; plane of cross-section; umbilical spiral. The absolute growth of these parameters follows a general growth formula which is based on the probability theory (time-dependent stochastic processes). The in crease of all basic parameters is ruled by analogous formulas which are derived from the general growth formula; the increase of the coiling spiral results in the geometrical figure of a logarithmic spiral, because this is the only one that meets the conditions of the general growth formula. The relative growth can be described as a morphogenetic program that is subdivided in presumably three formally connected subprograms. Each subprogram is defined by specific allometry and integration constants.

SUMMARY.
  • 1 The invertebrate colonization of a man-made stream, Flugströmmen, in southern Sweden was monitored for 18 months in 1988 and 1989. Benthic samples were taken on twelve occasions from three sites (upstream, middle and downstream) and community structure was compared with that at ten natural, permanent reference sites nearby.
  • 2 The number of species colonizing increased rapidly during the first 3 months. The increase was most rapid upstream but levelled off during the second year at this site, while numbers continued to increase downstream.
  • 3 Simuliid species were the earliest colonizers and reached high densities at upstream and middle sites during the first year. Ephemeropteran and plecopteran species also occurred early on, whereas Coleoptera, Odonata and Trichoptera were, on average, slower to colonize. Blackfly densities decreased upstream after the first year and hydropsychids became numerically dominant.
  • 4 The colonization order of functional feeding groups was as predicted: filter feeders first, grazers/collectors intermediate, predators and shredders last.
  • 5 After a year, the community structure in Flugströmmen closely resembled that in lake-outlet streams situated in the area, although communities at the three sites within the stream were most similar to one another.
  • 6 The possible role of competitive and predatory processes in determining the observed successional patterns are discussed.
