Abstract. Morphological (size and shape) and functional (growth, reproduction and phenology) attributes are used to characterize 42 annual species of Mediterranean grasslands according to their strategy. Principal component analysis of the matrix of 42 species x 9 attributes shows that the main trend of variation is related to plant size. Larger species have larger seeds, lower relative growth rates and lower reproductive output. The second and third trends of variation are related to plant shape. Ordination of species shows differences in shape between taxa and growth forms (grasses, legumes, forbs). The relative abundance of species with different attributes vary with the level of stress (water and nutrient availability) and disturbance (grazing and ploughing). Size is related to stress, with larger plants dominating in productive habitats and smaller ones in the most unproductive. Disturbance is related to shape and phenology, since grazing favours species with low canopies and ploughing favours species with shorter life cycles, that are usually small in size. Relations between plant attributes and habitat characteristics are examined within the more general framework of plant strategy theory. 相似文献

To determine whether renal blood flow is reduced or redistributed during exercise, we measured total renal flow (TRF) and intrarenal flow distribution (IRFD) in nine dogs. They ran on a motor-driven treadmill at 3-8 mph at grades of 8-15% for an average of 35 min. We measured aortic pressure, heart rate, stroke volume, and cardiac output (CO) via chronically implanted catheters and an electromagnetic flow probe. We injected 15-mum radiolabeled microspheres (85Sr, 141Ce, and 51Cr) via a left atrial catheter during resting control, steady state (SS) and exhaustive (EE) exercise; measured their distribution by gamma spectrometry; and determined TRF as % CO and as ml/100 g per min. We determined IRFD for the outer and inner cortex and the outer medulla. TRF as %CO dropped (P less than 0.05) during both levels of exercise: from 10.2 +/- 0.7% to 3.9 +/- 0.4% (SS) and 3.4 +/- 0.6% (EE). TRF in ml/100 g per min did not change significantly from control (228 +/- 30 ml/100 g per min). IRFD was unchanged with exercise, remaining at about 80, 20, and 3% of TRF for the outer and inner cortex and outer medulla, respectively. We conclude that blood flow is not diverted from the kidneys during severe exercise in the dog. 相似文献

The case of a 60-year-old woman with a five-year history of abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss is presented. On physical examination a hard mass on her right flank was evident. She died under unknown circumstances while she was waiting to be examined. At post-mortem examination the gallbladder was replaced by a neoplasm and there were gallstones within its lumen. Histologically, the tumour was constituted by a mixture of adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and undifferentiated sarcoma. The diagnosis of carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder was established. Studies of ontogenetic series of trichomycterids and other catfishes reveal that the suspensorium of siluroids is highly specialized; several synapomorphies separate siluroids from other teleosts. In siluroids, the palatoquadrate is divided into pars autopalatina and pars pterygoquadrata and both are usually connected by the autopaiatine-metapterygoid ligament. The pterygoquadrate is broadly joined to the dorsal limb of the hyoid arch, forming a cartilaginous hyomandibular-symplectic-pterygoquadrate plate in early ontogeny. This produces a special alignment of the hyomandibula and quadrate which is characteristic of siluroids. A symplectic bone is absent. The interhyal is absent in trichomycterids and astroblepids. Dorsal and ventral limbs of the hyoid arch are connected by a ligament. A rudimentary interhyal and this ligament are present in primitive siluroids such as diplomystids and nematogenyids as well as loricariids. The metapterygoid arises as an anterior ossification of the pars pterygoquadrata in siluroids. The formation and position of the metapterygoid exhibit two patterns: (1) the metapterygoid develops as an ossification of a cartilaginous projection positioned between the future hyomandibula and quadrate in primitive catfishes (e.g., Diplomystes) as well as in Nematogenys, callichthyids, loricariids, and astroblepids; (2) the metapterygoid arises as an ossification of the cartilaginous projection (pterygoid process) positioned just above the articular facet of the quadrate for the lower jaw. An ossified anterior chondral pterygoid process of the complex quadrate is present in trichomycterids, whereas the process is absent (simple quadrate) in catfishes such as diplomystids, nematogenyids, callichthyids, and loricariids. The anterior membranous process of the quadrate of Astroblepus is non-homologous with the chondral pterygoid process of trichomycterids; both structures arose independently within the loricarioids. Despite topological relationships, the origin and development of bones reveal the presence of a chondral hyomandibula which develops a large meinbranous outgrowth during ontogeny and a chondral metapterygoid in trichomycterids. The presence of a compound hyomandibula + metapterygoid or a compound metapterygoid + ectopterygoid + entopterygoid have no developmental support in trichomycterines or other siluroids. The “entopterygoid” of Nematogenys and Diplomystes arises as an ossification of a ligament. The dermal entopterygoid of other ostariophysans and the “entopterygoid” are homologous. An ectopterygoid or tendon bone “ectopterygoid” is absent in loricarioids. The suspensorium is an important structural system which has significant evolutionary transformations which characterize loricarioid subgroups; however, no character, of the suspensorium supports the monophyly of the loricarioids. 相似文献

The Gram-negative anaerobic pathogen Dichelobacter nodosus is the principal causative agent of footrot in sheep. The intA, intB and intC elements are mobile genetic elements which integrate into two tRNA genes downstream from csrA (formerly glpA) and pnpA in the D. nodosus chromosome. CsrA homologues act as global repressors of virulence in several bacterial pathogens, as does polynucleotide phosphorylase, the product of pnpA. We have proposed a model in which virulence in D. nodosus is controlled in part by the integration of genetic elements downstream from csrA and pnpA, altering the expression of these putative global regulators of virulence. We describe here a novel integrated genetic element, the intD element, which is 32 kb in size and contains an integrase gene, intD, several genes related to genes on other integrated elements of D. nodosus, a type IV secretion system and a putative mobilisation region, suggesting that the intD element has a role in the transfer of other genetic elements. Most of the D. nodosus strains examined which contained the intD gene were benign, with intD integrated next to pnpA, supporting our previous observation that virulent strains of D. nodosus have the intA element next to pnpA. 相似文献

Bradyrhizobium japonicum cytochrome c(550), encoded by cycA, has been previously suggested to play a role in denitrification, the respiratory reduction of nitrate to dinitrogen. However, the exact role of this cytochrome in the denitrification process is unknown. This study shows that cytochrome c(550) is involved in electron transfer to the copper-containing nitrite reductase of B. japonicum, as revealed by the inability of a cycA mutant strain to consume nitrite and, consequently, to grow under denitrifying conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor. Mutation of cycA had no apparent effect on methylviologen-dependent nitrite reductase activity. However, succinate-dependent nitrite reduction was largely inhibited, suggesting that c(550) is the in vivo electron donor to copper-containing nitrite reductase. In addition, this study demonstrates that a cytochrome c(550) mutation has a negative effect on expression of the periplasmic nitrate reductase. This phenotype can be rescued by extending the growth period of the cells. A model is proposed whereby a mutation in cycA reduces expression of the cbb(3)-type oxidase, affecting oxygen consumption rate by the cells and consequently preventing maximal expression of the periplasmic nitrate reductase during the first days of the growth period. 相似文献
