Plasma, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and amniotic fluid were examined to determine whether free D-amino acids were present and if so at what levels. It was found that D-amino acids exist in all physiological fluids tested, but that their level varied, considerably. The lowest levels of D-amino acids were usually found in amniotic fluid or CSF (almost always <1% of the corresponding L-amino acid). The highest levels were found in urine (usually tenth percent to low percent levels). Pipecolic acid seemed to be different from the other amino acids tested in that it was excreted primarily as the D-enantiomer (often >90%). Correspondingly high levels of D-pipecolic acid were not found in plasma. Some of the trends found in this work seemed to be analogous to those found in a recent rodent study. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Because a male/female resource tradeoff is a basic assumption of many models of sex allocation in cosexual plants, statistical and manipulative methods were used to look for evidence of intersexual resource conflicts in Zizania palustris. In this monoecious grass, male and female investments overlap in time within each panicle and on successive panicles, and sex allocation quickly responds to environmental changes. Nevertheless, no negative correlations were found between the numbers of florets of each sex within panicles, on consecutive panicles, or on whole plants. Removing immature fruits or florets of either sex did not significantly increase subsequent investment in the other sex. The one significant tradeoff was slightly lower total fruit production on plants with exceptionally large male investment. Wild rice, therefore, fits the tradeoff assumption of sex allocation models at the population level but rarely at the individual level.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the magnitude of the postexercise onset threshold for sweating is increased by the intensity of exercise was tested in eight subjects. Esophageal temperature was monitored as an index of core temperature while sweat rate was measured by using a ventilated capsule placed on the upper back. Subjects remained seated resting for 15 min (no exercise) or performed 15 min of treadmill running at either 55, 70, or 85% of peak oxygen consumption (V(o2 peak)) followed by a 20-min seated recovery. Subjects then donned a liquid-conditioned suit used to regulate mean skin temperature. The suit was first perfused with 20 degrees C water to control and stabilize skin and core temperature before whole body heating. Subsequently, the skin was heated ( approximately 4.0 degrees C/h) until sweating occurred. Exercise resulted in an increase in the onset threshold for sweating of 0.11 +/- 0.02, 0.23 +/- 0.01, and 0.33 +/- 0.02 degrees C above that measured for the no-exercise resting values (P < 0.05) for the 55, 70, and 85% of V(o2 peak) exercise conditions, respectively. We did note that there was a greater postexercise hypotension as a function of exercise intensity as measured at the end of the 20-min exercise recovery. Thus it is plausible that the increase in postexercise threshold may be related to postexercise hypotension. It is concluded that the sweating response during upright recovery is significantly modified by exercise intensity and may likely be influenced by the nonthermal baroreceptor reflex adjustments postexercise.  相似文献

The lipid and hydrocarbon composition of natural populations of diatom communities collected during the austral spring bloom of 1985 in the sea-ice at McMurdo Sound, Antartica was analyzed by TLC-FID, GC and GC-MS. Sea-ice diatom communities were dominated by Amphiprora sp., Nitzschia stellata Manguin and Berkeleya sp. at Cape Armitage; N. stellata, Amphiprora, Pleurosigma, N. kerguelensis (O'Meara) Hasle and some small centric diatoms adjacent to the Erebus Ice Tongue; and Porosira pseudodenticulata (Hustedt) Jouse at Wohlschlag Bay. Lipid distributions of the sea ice diatom communities from the Cape Armitage and Ereus sites were characterized by high concentrations of tracylaglecycerol (triacylglycerolplar lipid = 1.0 to 1.5). The hydrocarbon n-C21:6, common in temperate diatoms, and an isoprenoid C25 diunsaturated alkene were the dominant hydrocarons detected at these two sites. Hydrogenation of the C25 diene produced the known alkane 2, 6, 10, 14-tetramethyl-7- (3-methylpentyl)-pentadecane. The C25 diene is one of several structurally related hydrocarbons reported in many estuarine, coastal and ocean ic sediments. We propose that certain species of diatoms are a likely source of these alkenes in sediments. The first reported biological occurrence of the C25 diene in the green seaweed Enteromorpha prolifera may have been due to the presence of epiphytic microalgae in the field sample analysed.  相似文献

Summary Production of transgenic maize (Zea mays L.) callus, plants, and progeny from microprojectile bombardment of 2–5-d cultured Hi-II immature embryos is described. Histological evidence indicates that these tissues are amenable to transformation due to surface layer cell division of the scutellum. Two out of every 100 bombarded embryos produced transgenic callus and R0 transgenic plants were both male and female fertile. Expected segregation of transgenes was observed in progeny. The primary advantage of bombarding these tissues is increased male and female fertility of transgenic plants compared with those produced using long-term callus or suspension cultures.  相似文献

An analytical model, based on unsaturated zone water and solute balances, was developed to describe the uptake of saline groundwater by plants in dry regions. It was assumed that: i. initially, the profile had low water and salt contents to some depth; ii. both water and solutes move upwards from the water table by piston flow due only to plant water extraction; iii. the uptake of water concentrates solutes in the soil solution until some threshold salinity is reached, above which plants can no longer extract water due to osmotic effects; iv. uptake of the groundwater does not affect the water table level; and v. uptake of groundwater is only limited by transmission of groundwater through the soil. Model predictions were compared with measurements of groundwater uptake made over 15 months at five sites in aEucalyptus forest in a semi-arid area, using independently measured model parameters. Depth and salinity of groundwater, and soil type varied greatly between sites. Predicted groundwater uptake rates were close to measured values, generally being within ∼ 0.1 mm day-1. Sensitivity analysis showed that groundwater depth and salinity were the main controls on uptake of groundwater, while soil properties appeared to have a lesser effect. The model showed that uptake of groundwater would result in complete salinisation of the soil profile within 4 to 30 yr at the sites studied, unless salts were leached from the soil by rainfall or flood waters. However, a relatively small amount of annual leaching may be sufficient to allow groundwater uptake to continue. Thus groundwaters, even when saline, may be important sources of water to plants in arid and semi-arid areas.  相似文献

Two genetically similar variants of coxsackievirus B4, CB4-P and CB4-V, cause distinct disease syndromes in mice. A multidisciplinary approach was used to examine the events occurring in situ. The CB4-P variant induced acute pancreatitis, followed by repair of the exocrine tissues, while the CB4-V variant induced chronic pancreatitis, characterized by extensive destruction of the exocrine tissues. Since CB4-V replicated more efficiently than CB4-P in vivo, the more extensive tissue injury associated with CB4-V infection could be explained as the result of a higher level of viral replication. However, the fact that CB4-V replicated more efficiently in a mouse strain that survives infection than in a strain that succumbs to infection suggests that immune-mediated mechanisms as well as viral cytolysis may contribute to pancreatic tissue injury. To address the role of the immune system in virus-induced pancreatitis, the cell types within the inflammatory infiltrate were analyzed by flow cytometry. B cells (34 to 75%) were the most abundant, followed by T cells (10 to 30%), natural killer cells (4 to 8%), and macrophages (0 to 6%). Recruitment (and perhaps proliferation) of B and T cells to the pancreatic tissues was influenced by viral strain. Differential recruitment of T and B cells may reflect altered antigenic sites between CB4-P and CB4-V. The viral sequence that affected T- and B-cell recruitment was identified as a threonine residue at position 129 of the VP1 capsid protein.  相似文献

J. Appl.Physiol. 82(3): 799-806, 1997.This studycompared the influence of intravenous vs. oral rehydration afterexercise-induced dehydration during a subsequent 90-min exercisebout. It was hypothesized that cardiovascular, thermoregulatory, and hormonal variables would be the same between intravenous and oral rehydration because of similar restoration ofplasma volume (PV) and osmolality (Osmo). Eight non-heat-acclimated menreceived three experimental treatments (counterbalanced design) immediately after exercise-induced dehydration (33°C) to 4%body weight loss. Treatments were intravenous 0.45% NaCl (iv; 25 ml/kg), no fluid (NF), and oral saline (Oral; 25 ml/kg).After rehydration and rest (2 h total), subjects walked at 50% maximalO2 consumption for up to 90 min at36°C. The following observations were made: 1) heart rate was higher(P < 0.05) in Oral vs. ivat minutes 45, 60, and75 of exercise;2) rectal temperature, sweat rate, percent change in PV, and change in plasma Osmo were similar between ivand Oral; 3) change in plasmanorepinephrine decreased less (P < 0.05) in Oral compared with iv at minute45; 4) changes in plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol were similar between ivand Oral after exercise was initiated; and5) exercise time was similar betweeniv (77.4 ± 5.4 min) and Oral (84.2 ± 2.3 min). These datasuggest that after exercise-induced dehydration, iv and Oral wereequally effective as rehydration treatments. Thermoregulation, changein adrenocorticotropic hormone, and change in cortisol were notdifferent between iv and Oral after exercise began; this is likely dueto similar percent change in PV and change in Osmo.
