Summary Morphological alterations induced by dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) were studied in polycystic mouse ovaries (PCO). Treated mice showed ovulatory failure and cystic changes; cysts and follicles in various stages of growth and atresia were present although corpora lutea were absent. The levels of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, 3- and 3-androstanediol, estrone and androstenedione increased, whereas estradiol was not detectable.The ultrastructure of granulosa cells in healthy and atretic follicles was similar to that of control animals, although the membrana granulosa in cysts was reduced to a monolayer of flattened cells. The theca interna of healthy and atretic follicles and ovarian cysts showed ultrastructural signs of abnormal steroidogenic stimulation.No significant differences (0.7<P<0.8) were found between the extensive surface area of gap junctions of healthy follicles of control and DHA-treated animals. On the P-face of granulosa cells of large healthy follicles, meandering strands of tight junctional particles were observed; their average length was significantly longer than those in healthy follicles of control animals (P<0.001). This increase was probably related to the large amounts of androgens present in the treated animals.Theca interna cells possessed small gap junctions; no significant differences (P>0.9) in gap-junction surface area were observed between DHA-treated and control animals. Convulsive seizures were elicited in the rat by the injection of several different drugs (pyridoxal phosphate, bicuculline, penicillin and ouabain). Glycerolipid metabolism was studied after the intraventricular injection of [2-3H]glycerol, which was incorporated into rat brain glycerides. The percentage of total lipid label found in each lipid class (phosphatidylethanolamine, PE; phosphatidylcholine, PC; phosphatidylserine, PS; phosphatidic acid, PA; phosphatidylinositol, PI; diacylglycerol (+ monoacylglycerol), DG and triacylglycerol, TG) depended on the time elapsed from the injection of the labeled precursor. The percent of total lipid radioactivity as PE and PC increased with time (3–60 min), whereas the opposite was true for the radioactivity of DG and PA. The radioactivity of other lipid classes did not appreciabily vary between 3 and 60 min from the injection of the labeled glycerol. The intraventricular administration of pyridoxal phosphate together with labeled glycerol decreased the percent of lipid radioactivity as PE and increased that as DG. This lipid effect was detected also after the administration of other convulsants, such as ouabain and penicillin. Multiple discriminant analysis is a useful multivariate technique in vegetation studies that can be employed for several purposes, even if the underlying statistical assumptions are not satisfied. An example of application of this method is discussed: multiple discriminant analysis was successfully used for evaluating the predictivity of forest types defined by numerical classification of vegetation data with respect to soil variables.Species nomenclature follows Pignatti (1982) for vascular plants and Augier (1966) for mosses.The research has been supported by the IDROSER (Bologna, Italy) and by the Italian C. Crystals of three forms of human plasma apo-retinol-binding protein have been obtained using the procedure described for the holoprotein. The apoprotein was prepared by a novel method, which uses hydrophobic interaction and immobilized dye chromatography. The three forms were separated by fast protein liquid chromatography. All of the crystals are isomorphous and diffract to 2.5 Å resolution. A saturable reversible binding to membranes from rat retina has been found forl-[3H]lysine. Specific binding is time, temperature and protein concentration-dependent, and shows stereospecificity. The best computer fits of the experimental data are obtalned with a receptor medel based on two independent binding sites, of which only one site with a Kd value of 229.4±14.23 nM and a Bmax of 2.04 ±0.11 pmol/mg protein could be characterized satisfactorily. Several compounds included putative neurotransmitters have moderate or no affinity forl-lysine binding sites. A different pattern of distribution ofl-[3H]lysine binding sites is observed among various regions of the brain, with the highest density in the occipital cortex, and the lowest density in ponsmedulla.The existence of binding sites in rat retinal membranes forl-lysine, as well as in the areas involved in the visual pathway, suggests a role for this amino acid in the physiological mechanism of the visual function. 相似文献

Two crystal forms of calcium carbonate were observed: calcite (utricle) and aragonite (saccule, lagena, endolymphatic sac). The first step in otolith formation is the appearance of organic structures in the macula. The subsequent step is characterized by fast growing primitive crystals with a prismatic habitus that successively transform into adult or mature crystals. With the metamorphosis, the aragonite crystals of the endolymphatic organ show clear signs of erosion that can be related to a process of CaCO3 mobilization from such deposits. 相似文献

Abstract—
- 1 Upon incubation, slices of brain tissue took up fluid; the degree of swelling increased with increasing age. No sweiling occurred in slices from foetal brain. Since this swelling was associated with increases in the inulin space, the percentage of inulin space in slices at the end of incubation increased during brain development.
- 2 Most of the capacity for ion transport seemed to be absent from foetal brain. In vivo and in slices, Na+ was very high and K+ was very low in comparison to levels at other ages. There was a rapid change around birth, but no significant change at later ages. Upon incubation, Na+ levels increased in other slices, but not in slices of foetal brain.
- 3 Upon incubation of the slices, ATP levels were restored to levels close to those in the living brain; there were no significant alterations in available energy during development to explain changes in amino acid transport.
- 4 The composition of the free pool of cerebral amino acids in vivo changed with development, with some compounds (glutamic acid and related compounds) increasing, others (mostly‘essential’amino acids) decreasing, with age. These changes were not linear with time, and the level of a compound might exhibit several peaks during development.
- 5 The uptake (influx) of taurine, glutamate and glycine into brain slices increased rapidly during the foetal and early neonatal periods, reached a maximum between 2 and 3 weeks of postnatal age and then declined to adult levels. The levels of steady-state uptake with glycine also exhibited a maximal peak at 2-3 weeks of postnatal age. Steady-state uptake of taurine and glutamate reached adult levels by about 3 weeks of age.
- 6 The pattern of inhibition of amino acid transport by two specific amino acid analogues changed during development for some amino acids (GABA, glycine and glutamate), indicating an alteration in substrate specificity.
- 7 The results demonstrate complex changes in cerebral amino acid transport during development, with several maxima or minima and with changes in specificity for at least some compounds.

Summary Round bodies, tubular profiles and crystalline images have been studied by electron microscopy in the endothelium of seven normal young Rhesus monkeys and in the renal glomerular endothelium of two nephritic human patients. The crystalline images are most frequently formed by aggregation of round bodies, 200–240 Å in diameter. In Rhesus monkeys a variety of crystalline images are seen. On the contrary, in nephritic patients round bodies and tubular profiles are rare and less organized. In the glomerular endothelium of two normal men they were not found.The results obtained suggest that the round bodies, the tubular profiles and the crystalline images result from sectioning of a system of undulating tubules associated with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
