Different mechanisms, including equilibrium and non-equilibrium processes, have been taken into account as possible theoretical explanations of species coexistence. Despite the ample evidence on the existence of negative plant–soil feedback in both agriculture and natural vegetation, the role of these processes in the organization and dynamics of plant communities has so far been neglected. In this study, simulations by an individual-based competition model show how the intensity of negative feedback on individual plant performance can produce faster successional dynamics and allow species coexistence in two- and multi-species systems. The results show that even low levels of negative plant–soil feedback can enable species coexistence and often produce cyclic population dynamics. Moreover, the model highlights how negative feedback can generate positive reciprocal interspecific interactions at the population level, despite the fact that only competitive interactions is present between individual plants. In fact, competitive effects occur on a short-term scale, but positive reciprocal species interactions emerge only if negative feedback affects all species and if longer periods of simulation, more than the species life span, are considered. An important outcome of the model is the evidence that the effects at population level are timescale-dependent, thus showing the limitation of short-term species removal experiments used in traditional competition studies.  相似文献

The plasma membrane is a highly dynamic cell-barrier if the nature and distribution of its constituents are considered. Ion channels are embedded in these double lipid bilayers, which modulate their 3D-structures. The structure modulations by the lipid bilayer can assume such a degree that channel activation depends on them, as was shown for the KcsA potassium channel. Here we show that the cation-over-anion selectivity of reconstituted ICln channels can be varied by the thickness of a bilayer build of phosphatidylcholines. The shorter the acyl-chains and therefore the thinner the bilayers of the membrane are, the more potassium selective the channels are. In contrast, the longer the acyl-chains and therefore the thicker the membranes are, the more chloride selective the channels become.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Soil water repellency (SWR, i.e. the reduced affinity for water due to the presence of hydrophobic coatings on soil particles) has relevant hydrological implications on the rate of water infiltration, surface runoff, and overland flow. Here, we test how SWR varies along a 2490 m altitudinal gradient encompassing six ecosystems including Mediterranean, Temperate, and Alpine vegetation types.

Methods

Water repellency, measured by the Molarity of an Ethanol Droplet (MED) test, was quantified in 80 soil samples collected for 16 different elevations. Soil quality was assessed by measuring soil texture, pH, organic carbon, salinity, and nutrient availability.

Results

SWR showed a unimodal pattern along the 2490 m transect, peaking at intermediate elevations. Unexpectedly, SWR was the highest under broad-leaf deciduous forests, and the lowest under evergreen, sclerophyllous Mediterranean vegetation types. The soil organic carbon content, and the pH were the main determinants of water repellency, showing respectively a positive, and a negative correlation with the SWR. In contrast, soil texture and salinity resulted unrelated to the SWR.

Conclusions

With this study we demonstrated a linkage between SWR, vegetation type and soil pH and organic carbon content along the elevation gradient. Further studies are needed to explicitly evaluate the impact SRW on erosion risk at catchment scale in the context of climatic change.

190 subjects over 60 yrs of age, hospitalized for long stays were checked for scaling and hyperpigmented patches of P. versicolor. 20 patients (10.5%) showed no clinical lesions; 170 patients (89.5%) showed scaling and/or hyperpigmented patches of which 13 patients (6.8%) on direct microscopic exam showed hyphae and yeasts of M. furfur, 64 (33.6%) only globular forms of P. orbiculare and 113 cases (59.4%) showed no fungal elements. Wood's light examination showed that 38 subjects (20%) were 6 positive for M. furfur and 23 for P. orbiculare while in the other 9 no fungal elements were observed on microscopic exam. Whereas 48/132 patients negative to Wood's light were positive for yeasts on microscopic exam (false negative). This study indicates that P. versicolor is not rare in the elderly and that Wood's light examination is not diagnostic. There was no relationship between P. versicolor and underlying illness.  相似文献

A study on the succession of some phytoplankton populations in the very eutrophic Lake Varese over the past 80–100 years, was based on thin-layer chromatography of four group-specific carotenoids (echinenone, lutein, myxoxanthophyll and oscillaxanthin). The development of diatoms was traced by microscope counts of their frustules. In addition, the carotenoid okenone, peculiar to some Chromatium species, was identified and related to lake trophic conditions (the Chromatium species are obligate anaerobic bacteria, and use H2S).  相似文献

The prevalence of dermatophytes and yeasts (Candida spp. and Pityrosporum spp.) was studied in 40 former drug-addicts, all of whom were HIV seropositive but otherwise had no other symptoms (2nd Stage CDC Atlanta, 1987). We considered 7 skin areas for dermatophytes and Pityrosporum spp. (scalp, forehead, nose, back, chest, groin, toe webs) and the mouth for yeasts. Dermatophytes were found in 8 (20%) and tinea pedis was the most common dermatophytosis: Tricophyton rubrum was the fungus most frequently isolated (6 cases or 15%). The HIV + group showed almost the same rate of dermatophytes colonisation compared to a group of 121 athletes and to the control group. Candida spp. was present in 27 cases (67.5%) but clinical oral lesions were evident only in 5 patients (12.5%). Statistically significant differences were found in the presence of Candida spp. in HIV patients and controls (p<0.05). The lipophilic yeast Pityrosporum ovale was evaluated with quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative variations were evident between HIV patients and controls. P. ovale was present in 10 cases: 3 (7.5%) of them showed dischromic lesions while in 7 cases (17.5%) no clinical symptoms were evident.  相似文献

From the collection described by Abidi et al., 102 yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs) with human DNA inserts more than 300 kb in length were assigned to chromosomal band positions on early metaphase chromosomes by in situ hybridization using the biotin-avidin method. All the YACs hybridized within the Xq24-Xqter region, supporting the origin of the vast majority of the YACs from single human X-chromosomal sites. With assignments precise to +/- 0.5 bands, YACs were distributed among cytogenetic bands to roughly equal extents. Thus, there is no gross bias in the cloning of DNA from different bands into large YACs. To test band assignments further, hybridizations were carried out blind, and band positions were then compared with (1) probe localizations in cases in which a reported location was present in one of the YACs; (2) cross-hybridization of a labeled YAC with others in the collection; and (3) hybridization to a panel of DNAs from a series of hybrid cells containing Xq DNA truncated at various regions. Of 31 cases in which YACs contained a probe with a previously reported location, 28 in situ assignments were in agreement, and 14 other assignments, including one of the three discordant with probe localization, were confirmed by YAC cross-hybridization studies. Results with a group of nine YACs were further confirmed with a panel of somatic cell hybrid DNAs from that region. Five YACs hybridized both to Xq25 and to a second site (four in Xq27 and one in Xq28), suggestive of some duplication of DNA of the hybrid cell and perhaps in normal X chromosomes. The in situ assignments are thus sufficient to place YACs easily and systematically within bins of about 7-10 Mb and to detect some possible anomalies. Furthermore, on the basis of expectations for random cloning of DNA in YACs, the assigned YACs probably cover more than 50% of the total Xq24-Xq28 region. This provides one way to initiate the assembly of YAC contigs over extended chromosomal regions.  相似文献
