A random fatigue of mechanize titanium abutment studied with Markoff chain and stochastic finite element formulation

To measure fatigue in dental implants and in its components, it is necessary to use a probabilistic analysis since the randomness in the output depends on a number of parameters (such as fatigue properties of titanium and applied loads, unknown beforehand as they depend on mastication habits). The purpose is to apply a probabilistic approximation in order to predict fatigue life, taking into account the randomness of variables. More accuracy on the results has been obtained by taking into account different load blocks with different amplitudes, as happens with bite forces during the day and allowing us to know how effects have different type of bruxism on the piece analysed.     

Staining of Oligodendroglia with Silver Ammino Tungstate in Unembedded and Embedded Material

Specimens of brain or spinal cord fixed in formalin, Cajal's formol-bromide, or Koenig, Groat and Windle's formalin-acacia can be used to stain oligodendrocytes in frozen, in paraffin, or in celloidin sections. The sections are soaked 3-5 min in 0.02% acetic acid, pH 3.4, then rinsed 2-3 sec in 3% H₂O₂ and transferred to a silver bath prepared as follows: Mix equal parts of 10% AgNO₃ and 10% Na₂WO₄, and dissolve the precipitate with concentrated NH₄OH; avoid an excess of ammonia. Silver at room temperature for 15-20 sec, develop in 1% formalin, dehydrate, and mount. For embedded material, prepare a mixture consisting of 1 part of 10% aqueous Aerosol MA and 4 parts of 10% Aerosol OT in 95% alcohol. Add 5 drops of this mixture to each 50 ml of dilute acetic acid and 3% H₂O₂; 5 drops to each 20 ml of the silver bath.     

Membrane excitability expressed in human neuroblastoma cell hybrids

The voltage-sensitive Na+ channel is responsible for the action potential of membrane electrical excitability in neuronal tissue. Three methods were used to demonstrate the presence of neurotoxin-responsive Na+ channels in two hybrid cell lines resulting from the fusion of excitable human neuroblastoma cells with mouse fibroblasts. Only one of the two electrically active hybrid cell lines maintained the sensitivity of the neuroblastoma parent to tetrodotoxin (TTX). The other hybrid, although electrically active, was not responsive to TTX or scorpion venom. Comparisons of the patterns of expression of membrane excitability and of chromosome complements in these human neuroblastoma cell hybrids suggest that the phenotype of membrane excitability is composed of genetically distinct elements.     

Hydrolysis of nucleic acids by sepharose-micrococcal endonuclease

Initial reaction rates for the hydrolysis of nucleic acids with micrococcal endonuclease (EC 3.1.31.1) insolubilized on Sepharose are strongly influenced by diffusional limitations. Although the absolute values are low, they can be increased substantially by changing particle and pore size of the support, or enzyme concentration in the insoluble derivative. As a result of steric and diffusional limitations, the course of the reaction and selectivity to hydrolysis products for the insoluble derivatives are different to those of the native enzyme; the former produces mainly large and small fragments but few of intermediate size. Because of these differences in course and selectivity of the reaction, diffusional limitations become less important when high initial reaction rates are not required.     

On the complexity of fundamental computational problems in pedigree analysis.

Pedigree analysis is a central component of many current efforts to locate genes that contribute to diseases or to valuable traits. The analysis usually involves solving one of two very computation-intense problems. We analyze the complexity of these two problems. Surprisingly, we show that both problems are NP-hard even for pedigrees that contain no inbreeding loops.     

Characterization of a light-dependent glutamate synthase activity in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Photosynthetically active vesicles prepared from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii retained a light-dependent glutamate synthase activity which was highly specific for 2-oxoglutarate (K_m=2.1 mM) and L-glutamine (K_m=0.9 mM) as amido group acceptor and donor respectively. This activity was inhibited by azaserine, p-hydroxymercuribenzoate and 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethyl urea.Light-dependent synthesis of glutamate was also obtained by coupling Chlamydomonas photosynthetic particles to purified ferredoxin-glutamate synthase, using ascorbate and 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol as electron donor. This system was also specific for 2-oxoglutarate (K_m=1 mM) and L-glutamine (K_m=0.8 mM) as substrates, and was stimulated by dithioerythritol. S-100 protein in human lung neuroendocrine neoplasms. Immunohistochemical study of 14 cases and review of the literature

A group of lung neuroendocrine (NE) neoplasms are investigated in view of the possible presence of S-100 protein immunoreactivity in their cells. The selected tumours were classified according to Gould et al. (1983a) and Mosca et al. (1985). They comprise 5 carcinoids, 3 neuroendocrine carcinomas of the well-differentiated type, or peripheral carcinoids, 5 neuroendocrine carcinomas of the intermediate cell type, or intermediate-cell, poorly differentiated carcinomas, 3 neuroendocrine carcinomas of the microcytoma type, or small cell carcinomas-SCC and a nodal metastasis of microcytoma. All but 2 tumours were immunoreactive for neuron specific enolase (NSE). Few S-100 immunoreactive cells were detected in 4 out of 5 carcinoids, in 1 out of 3 peripheral carcinoids, in 4 out of 5 poorly differentiated carcinomas and in the 3 microcytomas examined. No S-100 positive cells were found in the SCC's nodal metastasis. The S-100 immunolabelled cells can be interpreted as dendritic reticulum cells migrating through the tumours. However, in one case of typical carcinoid, abundant S-100 positive cells were detected: their stellate morphology and their intimate relation with neoplastic cells suggest that they are part of the neoplasia as a sort of satellite cell.     

Influence of Hydrocortisone on Chick Embryo Retina Development

Treatment of chick embryos in ovo with hydrocortisone-21-phosphate (a single dose of 150 micrograms) caused a marked reduction of retinal thymidine kinase activity 24 h later. The inhibitory effect was highest (65-70%) in 8-10-day-old embryos and declined with age, disappearing after day 15. It was accompanied by a reduction in thickness of the retinal layers. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) treatment (10 micrograms daily for 2 days) also produced an age-dependent inhibitory effect on retinal thymidine kinase, whereas treatment with a single dose of 200 micrograms of metopirone, a compound that prevents the 11 beta-hydroxylation of steroid molecules in the adrenal glands, impeded the decrease in thymidine kinase activity that normally occurs in chick embryo retina after day 9 of development. In addition, metopirone prevented the inhibition exerted by ACTH on thymidine kinase activity but had no effect on the action of hydrocortisone.
