Infants' poor motor abilities limit their interaction with their environment and render studying infant cognition notoriously difficult. Exceptions are eye movements, which reach high accuracy early, but generally do not allow manipulation of the physical environment. In this study, real-time eye tracking is used to put 6- and 8-month-old infants in direct control of their visual surroundings to study the fundamental problem of discovery of agency, i.e. the ability to infer that certain sensory events are caused by one's own actions. We demonstrate that infants quickly learn to perform eye movements to trigger the appearance of new stimuli and that they anticipate the consequences of their actions in as few as 3 trials. Our findings show that infants can rapidly discover new ways of controlling their environment. We suggest that gaze-contingent paradigms offer effective new ways for studying many aspects of infant learning and cognition in an interactive fashion and provide new opportunities for behavioral training and treatment in infants.  相似文献

It is well known that dopamine imbalances are associated with many psychiatric disorders and that the dopaminergic receptor D2 is the main target of antipsychotics. Recently it was shown that levels of two proteins implicated in dopaminergic signaling, Neuronal calcium sensor-1 (NCS-1) and DARPP-32, are altered in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of both schizophrenic and bipolar disorder patients. NCS-1, which inhibits D2 internalization, is upregulated in the PFC of both patients. DARPP-32, which is a downstream effector of dopamine signaling, integrates the pathways of several neurotransmitters and is downregulated in the PFC of both patients. Here, we used PC12 cells stably overexpressing NCS-1 (PC12-NCS-1 cells) to address the function of this protein in DARPP-32 signaling pathway in vitro. PC12-NCS-1 cells displayed downregulation of the cAMP/PKA pathway, with decreased levels of cAMP and phosphorylation of CREB at Ser133. We also observed decreased levels of total and phosphorylated DARPP-32 at Thr34. However, these cells did not show alterations in the levels of D2 and phosphorylation of DARPP-32 at Thr75. These results indicate that NCS-1 modulates PKA/cAMP signaling pathway. Identification of the cellular mechanisms linking NCS-1 and DARPP-32 may help in the understanding the signaling machinery with potential to be turned into targets for the treatment of schizophrenia and other debilitating psychiatric disorders.  相似文献

Eutherian dentition has been the focus of a great deal of studies in the areas of evolution, development, and genomics. The development of molar teeth is regulated by an antero-to-posterior cascade mechanism of activators and inhibitors molecules, where the relative sizes of the second (M2) and third (M3) molars are dependent of the inhibitory influence of the first molar (M1). Higher activator/inhibitor ratios will result in higher M2/M1 or M3/M1. Pax9 has been shown to play a key role in tooth development. We have previously shown that a G-quadruplex in the first intron of Pax9 can modulate the splicing efficiency. Using a sliding window approach with we analyzed the association of the folding energy (Mfe) of the Pax9 first intron with the relative molar sizes in 42 mammalian species, representing 9 orders. The Mfe of two regions located in the first intron of Pax9 were shown to be significantly associated with the M2/M1 and M3/M1 areas and mesiodistal lengths. The first region is located at the intron beginning and can fold into a stable G4 structure, whereas the second is downstream the G4 and 265 bp from intron start. Across species, the first intron of Pax9 varied in G-quadruplex structural stability. The correlations were further increased when the Mfe of the two sequences were added. Our results indicate that this region has a role in the evolution of the mammalian dental pattern by influencing the relative size of the molars.  相似文献

A primary goal of community ecologists is to understand the processes underlying the spatiotemporal patterns of species distribution. Understanding the dispersal process is of great interest in ecology because it is related to several mechanisms driving community structure. We investigated the mobility of dung beetles using mark-release-recapture technique, and tested the usefulness of the current recommendation for interaction distance between baited pitfall traps in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We found differences in mean movement rate between Scarabaeinae species, and between species with different sets of ecological traits. Large-diurnal-tunneler species showed greater mobility than did both large-nocturnal tunneler and roller species. Our results suggest that, based on the analyses of the whole community or the species with the highest number of recaptured individuals, the minimum distance of 50 m between pairs of baited pitfall traps proposed roughly 10 years ago is inadequate. Dung beetle species with different sets of ecological traits may differ in their dispersal ability, so we suggest a new minimum distance of 100 m between pairs of traps to minimize interference between baited pitfall traps for sampling copronecrophagous Scarabaeinae dung beetles.  相似文献

The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) produced by mobile phones in the head of adults and children is simulated using an algorithm based on the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. Realistic models of the child and adult head are used. The electromagnetic parameters are fitted to these models. Comparison also are made with the SAR calculated in the children model when using adult human electromagnetic parameters values. Microstrip (or patch) antennas and quarter wavelength monopole antennas are used in the simulations. The frequencies used to feed the antennas are 1850 MHz and 850 MHz. The SAR results are compared with the available international recommendations. It is shown that under similar conditions, the 1g-SAR calculated for children is higher than that for the adults. When using the 10-year old child model, SAR values higher than 60% than those for adults are obtained.  相似文献

This work investigated the growth of Kluyveromyces marxianus NRRL Y-7571 in solid-state fermentation in a medium composed of sugarcane bagasse, molasses, corn steep liquor and soybean meal within a packed-bed bioreactor. Seven experimental runs were carried out to evaluate the effects of flow rate and inlet air temperature on the following microbial rates: cell mass production, total reducing sugar and oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and ethanol production, metabolic heat and water generation. A mathematical model based on an artificial neural network was developed to predict the above-mentioned microbial rates as a function of the fermentation time, initial total reducing sugar concentration, inlet and outlet air temperatures. The results showed that the microbial rates were temperature dependent for the range 27–50°C. The proposed model efficiently predicted the microbial rates, indicating that the neural network approach could be used to simulate the microbial growth in SSF.  相似文献

Antioxidant properties of complexes of flavonoids with metal ions   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The formation of complexes of metal ions with the flavonoids quercetin (L1), rutin (L2), galangin (L3) and catechin (L4) has been investigated by UV-visible spectroscopy. The antioxidant activities of the compounds were evaluated by using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicalscavenging method. In this work, we have shown that the complexed flavonoids are much more effective free radical scavengers than the free flavonoids. We suggest that the higher antioxidant activity of the complexes is due to the acquisition of additional superoxide dismutating centers. Radical scavenging activities of the compounds were also investigated from an electrochemical point of view. There is a relationship between the logarithm of the antioxidant activity (represented by EC50) and the oxidation potential. The synergic effect of the complexes and ascorbic acid were studied by [13C]-NMR analyses. The results show that ascorbic acid can protect flavonoids from oxidative degradation, and reveal antioxidant synergies between ascorbic acid and the compounds.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to investigate the interaction of water with ethylcellulose samples and assess the effect of particle size on the interaction. The distribution of water within coarse particle ethylcellulose (CPEC; average particle size 310 μm) and fine particle ethylcellulose (FPEC; average particle size 9.7 μm) of 7 cps viscosity grade was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic vapor sorption analysis. The amounts of nonfreezing and freezing water in hydrated samples were determined from melting endotherms obtained by DSC. An increase in water content resulted in an increase in the enthalpy of fusion of water for the two particle size fractions of EC. The amount of nonfreezable water was not affected by the change in particle size at low water contents. Exposure of ethylcellulose to water for 30 minutes is sufficient to achieve equilibration within the hydrated polymer at 47% wt/wt water content. The moisture sorption profiles were analyzed according to the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) and Young and Nelson equations, which can help to distinguish moisture distribution in different physical forms. The amount of externally adsorbed moisture was greater in the case of FPEC. Internally absorbed moisture was evident only with the CPEC. In light of these results, and explanation is offered for the success of FPEC in wet-granulation methods where CPEC was not successful.  相似文献

Microsporidia are intracellular pathogens that cause severe disease in immunocompromised humans and animals. We recently demonstrated that XID mice are more susceptible to Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection by intraperitoneal route, evidencing the role of B-1 cells in resistance against infection. The present study investigated the resistance and susceptibility against E. cuniculi oral infection, including the role of B-1 cells. BALB/c and BALB/c XID (B-1 cells deficient) mice were orally infected with E. cuniculi spores. No clinical symptoms were observed in infected animals; histopathology showed lymphoplasmocytic enteritis with degeneration of the apexes of the villi in all infected groups. Higher parasite burden was observed in infected BALB/c XID mice. In the spleen and peritoneum, all infected mice showed a decrease of lymphocytes, including CD8+ T cells, mostly in infected BALB/c XID mice. Adoptive transfer of B-1 cells (XID + B-1) was associated with a lower parasite burden. Pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-6) increased mostly in infected XID + B1 mice. Together, the present results showed that BALB/c XID mice infected by the oral route were more susceptible to encephalitozoonosis than BALB/c mice, demonstrating the B-1 cells importance in the control of the immune response against oral E. cuniculi infection.  相似文献
