Conclusions are advanced that this is an unrelated assemblage of at least five distinct evolutionary groups. Young, mature Beagle dogs underwent single inhalation exposure to respirable aerosols of 241AmO2 to determine the radiation dose distribution to tissues. The dogs were serially sacrificed to assess the clearance of 241Am from the lung, the rate of translocation to internal organs, the pattern of retention in the organs, and the rates and modes of excretion. Americium dioxide was relatively soluble in the lung, leading to the translocation of significant quantities of 241Am to bone and liver, thus delivering radiation doses to these tissues nearly equal to that received by the lung. Osteoblastic osteosarcomas developed in four dogs surviving more than 1000 days after exposure. Histologically, all of the osteosarcomas were associated with areas of radiation osteodystrophy characterized by bone infarction, peritrabecular new bone formation, marrow fibrosis, and microresorptive cavities. The retention and translocation of inhaled 241Am in dogs is similar to that of man, indicating that 241Am inhaled by humans may potentially result in significant risk of bone tumor development. 相似文献

The use of human tissue raises ethical issues of great concern to health care professionals, biomedical researchers, ethics

The debate has been intensified by high profile scandals such as the “baby hearts” debacle and revelations about the retention
of human brains in neuropathology laboratories worldwide. Respect for patient’s rights seems, however, to impede research
and development of clinical knowledge in contemporary health care. The Common clinical endeavour argument and a Presumption for beneficial use argument suggest that the use of tissues for research and teaching in contemporary health care can respect patients and their values
in multicultural communities where there are provisions for oversight and for opting not to contribute, both of which should
respect the diverse views of different ethnic or cultural groups.

The aim of the present study is to test by molecular DNA data a hypothesis concerned to speciation by allopatry occurring in Mimagoniates microlepis, associated to the Serra do Mar mountain chain (Atlantic Rain Forest hotspot) in Southern Brazil. Overall genetic diversity and mean genetic distances were high, demonstrating both good conservation status and genetic differentiation. Neighbor-Joining (NJ) and parsimony analyses, together with population genetic parameters (ΦST, Nm, GST, and AMOVA), identified two main vicariant genetic/evolutionary stocks dividing the upper Iguaçu River samples from those of the coastal plains. Other well-supported intrinsic monophyletic clades were also identified, suggesting fast and remarkable speciation processes. In addition, the genetic, evolutionary, geographic, and phylogeographic evidences reinforced an occurring species complex. Moreover, these evolutionarily significant units (species complex) seem to be inside four natural biogeographic areas. Thus, the genesis and evolution of the Serra do Mar complex might be associated to diversification processes of M. microlepis. Such a consideration suggests that the areas including the upper Iguaçu River and the coastal plains of the states of São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina require distinct conservation policies involving one of the global biodiversity hotspots, namely, the Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest. 相似文献

Heterokont members of the Pelagophyceae form the massive brown tides that have continually plagued the coastal regions of the eastern U.S. seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico. To gain a better understanding of the photosynthetic competence that may be linked to their success in forming massive blooms, we sequenced the chloroplast genomes of two pelagophytes: Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth and Aureoumbra lagunensis D. A. Stockw., DeYoe, Hargraves et P. W. Johnson. The chloroplast genomes of A. anophagefferens (89,599 bp) and Ar. lagunensis (94,346 bp) are significantly smaller than those of six other stramenopiles sequenced to date. The structure (or configuration) is partially due to the absence of the large inverted repeats common in chloroplast genomes. Eight of 10 small and tandem repeats from the A. anophagefferens and Ar. lagunensis genomes are adjacent to genes coding for photosynthetic or energy production functions, implying that these domains may have functional constraints. High genomic synteny, a multigene phylogenetic analysis, and a synapomorphic change in the form of an attenuated psbA gene confirm that A. anophagefferens and Ar. lagunensis are closely related taxa. Finally, the presence of three light‐independent chl‐biosynthesis genes in the chloroplast of Ar. lagunensis, but absence in the chloroplast and nuclear genomes of A. anophagefferens, suggests the persistence of a more ancient (i.e., dark‐adaptive) potential in Ar. lagunensis but not in A. anophagefferens. Whether the presence of both chl‐biosynthesis pathways in Ar. lagunensis contributes to the ability of this organism to sustain prolonged bloom (continuously for ~8 years) under reduced light conditions, but not A. anophagefferens (a few months), remains an open question. 相似文献
