A cross sectional survey investigating "building sickness" was carried out in two buildings with similar populations of office workers but differing ventilation systems, one being fully air conditioned with humidification and the other naturally ventilated. The prevalence of symptoms related to work was assessed by a questionnaire administered by a doctor. A stratified, randomly selected sample of workers was seen (84% response). Building sickness includes several distinct syndromes related to work, most of which were significantly more common in the air conditioned building than the naturally ventilated building--namely, rhinitis (28% v 5%), nasal blockage and dry throat (35% v 9%), lethargy (36% v 13%), and headache (31% v 15%). The prevalence of work related asthma and humidifier fever was low and did not differ significantly between the two buildings. An environmental assessment of the offices was performed to attempt to identify possible factors responsible for the differences in the prevalence of disease. Globe temperature, dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, moisture content, air velocity, positive and negative ions, and carbon monoxide, ozone, and formaldehyde concentrations were all measured. None of these factors differed between the buildings, suggesting that building sickness is caused by other factors. 相似文献

Understanding the clinical characteristics of patients with low back pain (LBP) who display improved lumbar multifidus (LM) muscle function after spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) may provide insight into a potentially synergistic interaction between SMT and exercise. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the baseline historical and physical examination factors associated with increased contracted LM muscle thickness one week after SMT. Eighty-one participants with LBP underwent a baseline physical examination and ultrasound imaging assessment of the LM muscle during submaximal contraction before and one week after SMT. The relationship between baseline examination variables and 1-week change in contracted LM thickness was assessed using correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple linear regression. Four variables best predicted the magnitude of increases in contracted LM muscle thickness after SMT. When combined, these variables suggest that patients with LBP, (1) that are fairly acute, (2) have at least a moderately good prognosis without focal and irritable symptoms, and (3) exhibit signs of spinal instability, may be the best candidates for a combined SMT and lumbar stabilization exercise (LSE) treatment approach. 相似文献

The ability of the Movement Deviation Profile (MDP) and Gait Deviation Index (GDI) to detect gait changes was compared in a child with cerebral palsy who underwent game training. Conventional gait analysis showed that sagittal plane angles became mirrored about normality after training. Despite considerable gait changes, the GDI showed minimal change, while the MDP detected a difference equal to a shift between 10-9 on the Functional Assessment Questionnaire scale. Responses of the GDI and MDP were examined during a synthetic transition of the patient's curves from before intervention to a state mirrored about normality. The GDI showed a symmetric response on the two opposite sides of normality but the neural network based MDP gave an asymmetric response reflecting faithfully the unequal biomechanical consequences of joint angle changes. Chromosome painting using multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization showed that, in addition to the T1AL·1RS translocation derived from rye, a segment from chromosome 3Ae#1 of Agropyron elongatum (2n=10x =70), is present in Amigo wheat. The Agropyron chromosome segment is located on the satellite of chromosome 1B and the translocation chromosome is designated as T1BL·1BS-3Ae#1L. T1BL·1BS-3Ae#1L was inherited from Teewon wheat and carries resistance genes to stem rust (Sr24) and leaf rust (Lr24). The Agropyron chromosome segments in different Sr24/Lr24 carrier wheat lines, including Agent, TAP 48, TAP 67, Teewon, and Amigo, showed a diagnostic C-band, and were derived from the same chromosome, 3Ae#1. 相似文献

A chromosome with two functional centromeres is cytologically unstable and can only be stabilized when one of the two centromeres becomes inactivated via poorly understood mechanisms. Here, we report a transmissible chromosome with multiple centromeres in wheat. This chromosome encompassed one large and two small domains containing the centromeric histone CENH3. The two small centromeres are in a close vicinity and often fused as a single centromere on metaphase chromosomes. This fused centromere contained approximately 30% of the CENH3 compared to the large centromere. An intact tricentric chromosome was transmitted to about 70% of the progenies, which was likely a consequence of the dominating pulling capacity of the large centromere during anaphases of meiosis. The tricentric chromosome showed characteristics typical to dicentric chromosomes, including chromosome breaks and centromere inactivation. Remarkably, inactivation was always associated with the small centromeres, indicating that small centromeres are less likely to survive than large ones in dicentric chromosomes. The inactivation of the small centromeres also coincided with changes of specific histone modifications, including H3K27me2 and H3K27me3, of the pericentromeric chromatin. 相似文献

Recurrent deletions of puroindoline genes at the grain hardness locus in four independent lineages of polyploid wheat 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Polyploidy is known to induce numerous genetic and epigenetic changes but little is known about their physiological bases. In wheat, grain texture is mainly determined by the Hardness (Ha) locus consisting of genes Puroindoline a (Pina) and b (Pinb). These genes are conserved in diploid progenitors but were deleted from the A and B genomes of tetraploid Triticum turgidum (AB). We now report the recurrent deletions of Pina-Pinb in other lineages of polyploid wheat. We analyzed the Ha haplotype structure in 90 diploid and 300 polyploid accessions of Triticum and Aegilops spp. Pin genes were conserved in all diploid species and deletion haplotypes were detected in all polyploid Triticum and most of the polyploid Aegilops spp. Two Pina-Pinb deletion haplotypes were found in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum; ABD). Pina and Pinb were eliminated from the G genome, but maintained in the A genome of tetraploid Triticum timopheevii (AG). Subsequently, Pina and Pinb were deleted from the A genome but retained in the A(m) genome of hexaploid Triticum zhukovskyi (A(m)AG). Comparison of deletion breakpoints demonstrated that the Pina-Pinb deletion occurred independently and recurrently in the four polyploid wheat species. The implications of Pina-Pinb deletions for polyploid-driven evolution of gene and genome and its possible physiological significance are discussed. 相似文献
