The impact of exotic species on native organisms is widely acknowledged, but poorly understood. Very few studies have empirically investigated how invading plants may alter delicate ecological interactions among resident species in the invaded range. We present novel evidence that antifungal phytochemistry of the invasive plant, Alliaria petiolata, a European invader of North American forests, suppresses native plant growth by disrupting mutualistic associations between native canopy tree seedlings and belowground arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Our results elucidate an indirect mechanism by which invasive plants can impact native flora, and may help explain how this plant successfully invades relatively undisturbed forest habitat. 相似文献

This study presents an in-depth analysis of the effects of obesity on energy balance (EB) and fuel utilization in adult female rats, over the estrous cycle and immediately after surgical ovariectomy (OVX), to model pre- and postmenopausal states, respectively. Female Wistar rats were fed a high-fat (46%) diet for 16 wk to produce mature lean and obese animals. Stage of estrous was identified by daily vaginal lavage, while energy intake (EI), total energy expenditure (TEE), and fuel utilization were monitored in a multichamber indirect calorimeter and activity was monitored by infrared beam breaks. Metabolic monitoring studies were repeated during the 3-wk period of rapid OVX-induced weight gain. Component analysis of TEE was performed to determine the nonresting and resting portions of energy expenditure. Obesity was associated with a greater fluctuation in EB across the estrous cycle. Cycling obese rats were less active, expended more energy per movement, and oxidized more carbohydrate than lean rats. The changes in EB over the cycle in lean and obese rats were driven by changes in EI. Finally, OVX induced a large positive energy imbalance in obese and lean rats. This resulted primarily from an increase in EI in both groups, with little change in TEE following OVX. These observations reveal a dominant effect of obesity on EB, fuel utilization, and activity levels in cycling rats, which has implications for studies focused on obesity and EB in female rodents. 相似文献

We investigated the effects of eight temperatures (22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5, 35.0, 37.5, and 40.0 degrees C) and four relative humidities (43, 55, 63, and 75%) on population growth and development of the psocid Liposcelis rufa Broadhead (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae). L. rufa did not survive at 43% RH, at all temperatures tested; at 55% RH, at the highest four temperatures; and at 63% RH and 40.0 degrees C. The greatest population growth was recorded at 35.0 degrees C and 75% RH (73-fold growth). At 40.0 degrees C, L. rufa populations declined or barely grew. L. rufa males have two to four nymphal instars, and the percentages of males with two, three, and four instars were 31, 54, and 15%, respectively. Female L. rufa have two to five instars, and the percentages of females with two, three, four, and five instars were 2, 44, 42, and 12%, respectively. The life cycle was shorter for males than females. We developed temperature-dependent developmental equations for male and female eggs, individual nymphal, combined nymphal, and combined immature stages. The ability of L. rufa to reproduce at a relative humidity of 55% and temperatures of 22.5-30.0 degrees C and at relative humidities of 63-75% and temperatures of 22.5-37.5 degrees C, in addition to being able to survive at 40.0 degrees C, suggests that this species would be expected to have a broader distribution than other Liposcelis species. These data provide a better understanding of L. rufa population dynamics and can be used to help develop effective management strategies for this psocid. 相似文献

The roles of sustained components of I(Na) and I(Kv43) in shaping the action potentials (AP) of myocytes isolated from the canine left ventricle (LV) have not been studied in detail. Here we investigate the hypothesis that these two currents can contribute substantially to heterogeneity of early repolarization and arrhythmic risk. Quantitative data from voltage-clamp and expression profiling experiments were used to complete meaningful modifications to an existing "local control" model of canine midmyocardial myocyte excitation-contraction coupling for epicardial and endocardial cells. We include 1) heterogeneous I(Kv43), I(Ks), and I(SERCA) density; 2) modulation of I(Kv43) by Kv channel interacting protein type 2 (KChIP2) channel subunits; 3) a possible Ca(2+)-dependent open-state inactivation of I(Kv43); and 4) a sustained component of the inward Na(+) current, I(NaL). The resulting simulations illustrate ways in which KChIP2- and Ca(2+)-dependent control of I(Kv43) can result in a sustained outward current that can neutralize I(NaL) in a rate- and myocyte subtype-dependent manner. Both these currents appear to play significant roles in modulating AP duration and rate dependence in midmyocardial myocytes. Furthermore, an increased ratio of I(Kv43) to I(NaL) is capable of protecting epicardial myocytes from the early afterdepolarizations resulting from the SCN5A-I1768V mutation-induced increase in I(NaL). Experimentally observed transmural differences in Ca(2+) handling, including greater sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) content and faster Ca(2+) transient decay rates on the epicardium, were recapitulated in our simulations. To investigate the evolution and geographical origins of hexaploid wheat, we examined a 284 bp sequence from the promoter region of the GluDy locus, coding for the y subunit of high-molecular-weight glutenin. Fourteen different alleles were found in 100 accessions of Aegilops tauschii and 169 of Triticum aestivum. Two alleles were present in both species; the other 7 alleles from Ae. tauschii and 5 from T. aestivum were unique to their respective species. The two shared alleles differed at only one nucleotide position within the region sequenced, but their apparent association with the common haplotypes GluD1a and GluD1d, which have substantial differences within their GluDy coding regions, makes it unlikely that the alleles evolved independently in Ae. tauschii and T. aestivum. The results therefore support previous studies which suggest that there were at least two Ae. tauschii sources that contributed germplasm to the D genome of T. aestivum. The number of alleles present in T. aestivum, and the nucleotide diversity of these alleles, indicates that this region of the D genome has undergone relatively rapid change since polyploidisation. Ae. tauschii from Syria and Turkey had relatively high nucleotide diversity and possessed all the major GluDy alleles, indicating that these populations are probably ancient and not the result of adventive spread. The presence in the Turkish population of both of the shared alleles suggests that hexaploid wheat is likely to have originated in southeast Turkey or northern Syria, within the Fertile Crescent and near to the farming villages at which archaeological remains of hexaploid wheats are first found. We report here the transmission of human prions to 18 new transgenic (Tg) mouse lines expressing 8 unique chimeric human/mouse prion proteins (PrP). Extracts from brains of two patients, who died of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), contained either sCJD(MM1) or sCJD(VV2) prion strains and were used for inocula. Mice expressing chimeric PrP showed a direct correlation between expression level and incubation period for sCJD(MM1) prions irrespective of whether the transgene encoded methionine (M) or valine (V) at polymorphic residue 129. Tg mice expressing chimeric transgenes encoding V129 were unexpectedly resistant to infection with sCJD(VV2) prions, and when transmission did occur, it was accompanied by a change in strain type. The transmission of sCJD(MM1) prions was modulated by single amino acid reversions of each human PrP residue in the chimeric sequence. Reverting human residue 137 in the chimeric transgene from I to M prolonged the incubation time for sCJD(MM1) prions by more than 100 days; structural analyses suggest a profound change in the orientation of amino acid side chains with the I→M mutation. These findings argue that changing the surface charge in this region of PrP greatly altered the interaction between PrP isoforms during prion replication. Our studies contend that strain-specified replication of prions is modulated by PrP sequence-specific interactions between the prion precursor PrP(C) and the infectious product PrP(Sc). 相似文献
