The seasonal growth and reproductive phenology of Neorhodomela aculeata (Perestenko) Masuda and Ceramium kondoi Yendo, and the food preferences of herbivorous snails were examined to elucidate (i) why snails select the fronds of N. aculeata for their habitat; and (ii) the survival strategies of the two red algae under grazing pressures. The maximal lengths and weights of both algal species were recorded for each season over a 12‐month period beginning with the spring of 2003. C. kondoi grew in length at a faster rate than N. aculeate, whereas the turf alga N. aculeata produced new branches from the tips of broken branches. The reproductive period of C. kondoi was between the spring and summer but the reproductive organs of N. aculeata were observed throughout the year. The algal loss rate of fresh N. aculeata to snails was low but snails had a food preference for N. aculeata when compared to C. kondoi in an artificial food experiment. These results indicate that snails may adapt to chemical compounds characteristic of N. aculeata and that the alga further reduces predation damage by its structural resistance. In conclusion, the survival strategies of C. kondoi appear to be rapid growth, seasonal sexual reproduction, and a delicately branched frond morphology that reduces stable feeding patterns of its predators plus high tissue nitrogen content, whereas the survival strategy of N. aculeata includes regenerative growth responses, structural toughness and chemical defenses while under the grazing pressure of herbivorous snails. 相似文献

For the purpose of hydrolysing hemicelluloses to oligomers and monomers, Sesbania grandiflora samples were subjected to isothermal autohydrolysis in the temperatures ranging from 145 °C to 190 °C, using a solid to liquid ratio of 8 and reaction times up to 7.5 h. Kinetic models based on sequential pseudo-homogeneous first order Kinetics with Arrhenius type temperature dependence were employed for describing the time course of the main hemicelluloses compounds and their degradation products. The hydrothermal treatment results show that Sesbania grandiflora can be employed as an alternative raw material for the production of XOS leading to high concentrations of XOS (14.1 g/L in the experiment carried out at 190 °C and 0.1 h) and xylan to XOS conversion (62.6% in the experiment carried out at 190 °C and 6 min). The model proposed provides a satisfactory interpretation of the experimental data obtained in the hydrothermal treatments of this study. 相似文献

Cells from the slime variant of Neurospora crassa were broken in isotonic conditions by use of triethanolamine buffer plus EDTA. After removal of large membranous structures by low-speed centrifugation, chitosomes and secretory vesicles were separated by means of gel filtration, precipitation of membranous contaminants with Concanavalin A, and centrifugation in sucrose or glycerol gradients. Polypeptidic composition of fractions enriched in secretory vesicles or chitosomes was found to be distinct. By these criteria we concluded that chitosomes and secretory vesicles represent different populations of microvesicles. Both microvesicular populations appeared free of endoplasmic reticulum and vacuolar contaminants as demonstrated by determination of appropriate enzymatic markers.Abbreviations ER

Abstract: In this report, we examine the requirement of cholesterol biosynthesis and its axonal transport for goldfish optic nerve regeneration. Cholesterol, labeled by intraocular injection of [3 H]mevalonolactone. exhibited a delayed appearance in the optic tectum. Squalene and other minor components were labeled but not transported. Following optic nerve crush, the amount of labeled cholesterol transport was elevated, while retinal labeling was not altered relative to control fish. A requirement for cholesterol biosynthesis is inferred from the inhibition of neurite outgrowth in retinal explants caused by the cholesterol synthesis inhibitor, 20, 25-diazacholes-terol. The inhibition of growth could be overcome by addition of mevalonolactone, but not cholesterol, to the medium. Intraperitoneal administration of 200 nmol of dia-zacholesterol resulted in 92-98% inhibition of retinal cholesterol synthesis and accumulation of labeled des-mosterol and other lipids in fish retina and brain which persisted for 2 weeks. Diazacholesterol-treated fish showed no reduction in the amount of lipid-soluble radioactivity transported following intraocular injection of [3 H]mevalonolactone, but there were alterations in the chromatographic pattern of the transported labeled lipids. In contrast to its effects on neurite outgrowth in vitro , diazacholesterol did not inhibit optic nerve regeneration in vivo , as measured both by arrival of labeled rapidly transported protein at the tectum and by time required for the return of visual function. 相似文献

Introduction
The disease burden and risk factors for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (MPV) infections among children living in remote, rural areas remain unclear.Materials and Methods
We conducted a prospective, household-based cohort study of children aged <3 years living in remote rural highland communities in San Marcos, Cajamarca, Peru. Acute respiratory illnesses (ARI), including lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), were monitored through weekly household visits from March 2009 through September 2011. Nasal swabs collected during ARI/LRTI were tested for RSV, MPV, and other respiratory viruses using real-time RT-PCR. Incidence rates and rate ratios were calculated using mixed effects Poisson regression.Results
Among 892 enrolled children, incidence rates of RSV and MPV ARI were 30 and 17 episodes per 100 child-years, respectively. The proportions of RSV and MPV ARI that presented as LRTI were 12.5% and 8.9%, respectively. Clinic visits for ARI and hospitalizations were significantly more frequent (all p values <0.05) among children with RSV (clinic 41% and hospital 5.3%) and MPV ARI (38% and 3.5%) when compared with other viral infections (23% and 0.7%) and infections without virus detected (24% and 0.6%). In multivariable analysis, risk factors for RSV detection included younger age (RR 1.02, 95% CI: 1.00-1.03), the presence of a smoker in the house (RR 1.63, 95% CI: 1.12-2.38), residing at higher altitudes (RR 1.93, 95% CI: 1.25-3.00 for 2nd compared to 1st quartile residents; RR 1.98, 95% CI: 1.26-3.13 for 3rd compared to 1st quartile residents). Having an unemployed household head was significantly associated with MPV risk (RR 2.11, 95% CI: 1.12-4.01).Conclusion
In rural high altitude communities in Peru, childhood ARI due to RSV or MPV were common and associated with higher morbidity than ARI due to other viruses or with no viral detections. The risk factors identified in this study may be considered for interventional studies to control infections by these viruses among young children from developing countries. 相似文献39.

As an approach to isolate novel cereal promoters, promoterless uidA constructs and particle bombardment were used to transform tritordeum. Five of eight transgenic lines containing uidA sequences showed evidence of promoter tagging. Expression of uidA was detected in four lines as: constitutive expression, expression in short cells of the epidermis of the spikelets, expression in pollen grains and in cells of the epidermis of the spikelet, and expression in anther primordia and pollen grains. In the fifth line, the uidA was shown by RT-PCR to be transcribed, but no GUS activity was detected. The different patterns of uidA expression indicate that different regulatory sequences were tagged in each of these lines. Analysis of the progeny resulting from self-fertilisation of the primary tagged plants, indicate that the transgenes integrated at one or two loci and the patterns of expression were stably inherited. To our knowledge, this is the first report of promoter tagging in cereals by direct gene transfer. 相似文献
