Background
The diversity of parasites attacking a host varies substantially among different host species. Understanding the factors that explain these patterns of parasite diversity is critical to identifying the ecological principles underlying biodiversity. Seabirds (Charadriiformes, Pelecaniformes and Procellariiformes) and their ectoparasitic lice (Insecta: Phthiraptera) are ideal model groups in which to study correlates of parasite species richness. We evaluated the relative importance of morphological (body size, body weight, wingspan, bill length), life-history (longevity, clutch size), ecological (population size, geographical range) and behavioural (diving versus non-diving) variables as predictors of louse diversity on 413 seabird hosts species. The accumulation by purified immature porcine Leydig and Sertoli cells of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate in the presence of 1-methyl-3-isobuthylxathine was studied and their respective testosterone and 17 beta-estradiol production in response to catecholamines was assessed in vitro. These substances increased both basal and FSH-stimulated cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate accumulation in Sertoli cells. In contrast, catecholamines slightly enhanced basal cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate production but inhibited its human chorionic gonadotropin-stimulated accumulation by Leydig cells. Catecholamines had no effect on basal and stimulated testosterone release by these cells, while dopamine inhibited 17 beta-estradiol synthesis by Sertoli cells. Using various alpha- and beta-adrenergic agonists and antagonists, beta-receptors, likely of the beta 1-subtype, were shown to be present in both cell lines. Taken together these data suggest the presence of a cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate-linked adrenergic receptor in porcine Leydig and Sertoli cells, the role of which remains to be determined. 相似文献

In 24-h cultures, steroid production by cells from non-atretic follicles increased with increasing follicular diameter. Cells from atretic follicles, of all sizes, produced low amounts of oestradiol-17 beta, but very high amounts of progesterone, relative to cells from non-atretic follicles. Increasing the culture period to 72 h caused little change in daily progesterone and oestradiol-17 beta production by granulosa cells from atretic follicles. In contrast, in cells from non-atretic follicles, daily progesterone production increased and daily oestradiol-17 beta production decreased to the levels observed with cells from atretic follicles. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP (1.0 mM) significantly stimulated progesterone production by cells from atretic, but not from non-atretic, follicles. Testosterone (1 microgram/ml) had no effect on progesterone production by cells from atretic follicles, while oestradiol-17 beta, oestrone, testosterone, androstenedione and 5 alpha-dihydro-testosterone (0-1000 ng/ml) each significantly suppressed progesterone production by cells from non-atretic follicles in a dose-dependent manner. Morphometric analysis revealed few subcellular differences between cells from non-atretic and atretic follicles. Mean cell volume was significantly higher for cells from atretic compared to non-atretic follicles, but the mean volumes of the major subcellular components were not influenced by follicle health. The mean surface area of the plasma and nuclear membrane, and granular endoplasmic reticulum was also significantly higher in cells from atretic compared to non-atretic follicles. 相似文献

Expression in Xenopus oocytes of cloned nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (alpha, beta, gamma and delta subunits of BC3H1 receptor), produced more than one sort of functional receptor.
