Pelodera (syn. Rhabditis) strongyloides as a cause of dermatitis – a report of 11 dogs from Finland

Background  

Pelodera (Rhabditis) strongyloides is a small saprophytic nematode that lives in decaying organic matter. On rare occasions, it can invade the mammalian skin, causing a pruritic, erythematous, alopecic and crusting dermatitis on skin sites that come into contact with the ground. Diagnosis of the disease is based on case history (a dog living outdoors on damp straw bedding) with characteristic skin lesions and on the demonstration of typical larvae in skin scrapings or biopsy. Pelodera (rhabditic) dermatitis cases have been reported mainly from Central European countries and the United States.

A systematic survey of intrastratal trace fossil distribution in flysch deposits shows that the ichnocoenoses form along two radically different modes: 1. Post‐turbidite ichnocoenoses begin with synchronous colonization. Further development of the tiered structure depends primarily on sediment composition, textural profile and oxygen levels. Different species respond to these factors according to their oxygen tolerances, penetration potentials and nutritional requirements.

2. Pre‐turbidite ichnocoenoses result from successional colonization, depending on the duration of background sedimentation. The depth of subsequent turbidite erosion determines which tier becomes preserved.

     

Fructose-1,6-diphosphate as an in vitro and in vivo anti-alcohol agent in the rat

Fructose-1, 6-diphosphate (FDP) decreases the effect of ethanol on Ca++ entry and inhibits the ethanol-stimulated phosphate efflux in rat heart slices. FDP also inhibits the ethanol-stimulated [36Cl-]-uptake by rat brain microvesicles and affects the isolated GABA-receptor in a way opposite to that of ethanol. The in vivo effects of FDP include a dose-dependent decrease in ethanol-induced gastric ulcers and a decrease in the serum transaminase levels raised by chronic ethanol administration. Other central actions of ethanol such as diuresis, narcosis, dependence and withdrawal symptoms are also counteracted by FDP.
