Climate change is expected to cause geographic shifts in tree species' ranges, but such shifts may not keep pace with climate changes because seed dispersal distances are often limited and competition‐induced changes in community composition can be relatively slow. Disturbances may speed changes in community composition, but the interactions among climate change, disturbance and competitive interactions to produce range shifts are poorly understood. We used a physiologically based mechanistic landscape model to study these interactions in the northeastern United States. We designed a series of disturbance scenarios to represent varied disturbance regimes in terms of both disturbance extent and intensity. We simulated forest succession by incorporating climate change under a high‐emissions future, disturbances, seed dispersal, and competition using the landscape model parameterized with forest inventory data. Tree species range boundary shifts in the next century were quantified as the change in the location of the 5th (the trailing edge) and 95th (the leading edge) percentiles of the spatial distribution of simulated species. Simulated tree species range boundary shifts in New England over the next century were far below (usually <20 km) that required to track the velocity of temperature change (usually more than 110 km over 100 years) under a high‐emissions scenario. Simulated species` ranges shifted northward at both the leading edge (northern boundary) and trailing edge (southern boundary). Disturbances may expedite species' recruitment into new sites, but they had little effect on the velocity of simulated range boundary shifts. Range shifts at the trailing edge tended to be associated with photosynthetic capacity, competitive ability for light and seed dispersal ability, whereas shifts at the leading edge were associated only with photosynthetic capacity and competition for light. BACKGROUND: Intra-peritoneal adipose tissue is recognized as a predictor of metabolic syndrome and may contribute to the risk for cardiovascular disease by the production of adipocytokines, including adiponectin. Nevertheless, there is no knowledge on whether other visceral depots of adipose tissue, including the epicardial fat, have any metabolically active role, including production of adiponectin. AIM OF THE STUDY: We sought to evaluate adiponectin protein expression in epicardial adipose tissue in vivo both in patients with severe coronary artery disease (CAD) and in subjects without CAD. METHODS: Twenty-two patients were enrolled for the study. We selected 16 patients who underwent elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery for critical CAD, 5 who underwent surgery for valve replacement and 1 for correction of an interatrial defect. Epicardial adipose tissue biopsy samples were obtained before the initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass. Adiponectin protein level in epicardial adipose tissue was evaluated by Western blotting. RESULTS: Adiponectin protein value, expressed as adiponectin/actin ratio, in epicardial adipose tissue was significantly lower in patients with severe CAD than in those without CAD (1.42 +/- 0.77 vs 2.36 +/- 0.84 p = 0.02, 95% CI 0.64-1.74). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed for the first time that human epicardial adipose tissue expresses adiponectin. Paradoxornis webbianus and Paradoxornis alphonsianus naturally occur in South-East Asia. Due to a recent introduction, a mixed population currently occurs in northern Italy. A preliminary phylogeographic analysis using samples from Italy and China found little genetic differentiation between the two taxa and revealed the existence of two molecular lineages, sympatric in some part of China, that do not correspond to the morphological classification. Possible taxonomic changes and preliminary inferences on the relationships between Chinese and the Italian populations and on the likely provenance of the founders introduced in Italy are also discussed. 相似文献

Several pieces of evidence indicate a Mediterranean origin of the colonization of America by Drosophila subobscura . To ascertain whether the origin was from the Eastern or the Western Mediterranean region, samples from Barcelona (Spain) and Mt Parnes (Greece) were collected and O chromosomal inversion polymorphism and lethal genes were analysed. The frequencies of lethal chromosomes were 0.244 ± 0.039 in Barcelona and 0.336 ± 0.043 in Mt Parnes, consistent with the expectations for large populations located in the central area of the species distribution. Lethal genes seem to be distributed at random along the O chromosome in both populations. The intra-populational allelism frequencies of Barcelona and Mt Parnes were 0.016 ± 0.007 and 0.012 ± 0.005 respectively. Thus, the estimates of the effective population size were high in both populations (between 6964 and 13 004 in Barcelona and 11 874 to 26 828 in Mt Parnes). The cases of allelism in Mt Parnes were observed only between individual lethal genes, but in Barcelona some concatenated clusters of allelism were detected. This pattern of allelism can be explained by synthetic lethality, hybrid dysgenesis, the induction of recurrent lethal mutations by different factors or an effect of microdifferentiation in subpopulations. In both populations, a reduction in fitness in the heterozygotes for lethal genes has been detected. Furthermore, the estimates of the migration coefficient (between 0.0085 and 0.0120 in Barcelona, and 0.0057 and 0.0087 in Mt Parnes) confirm the existence of gene flow between Palearctic populations of D. subobscura . Our lethal genes and chromosomal inversion results are consistent with a Mediterranean origin of the colonization of America by D. subobscura , but are inconclusive with regard to the identification of the population from which these colonizers came. 相似文献

Summary The taxonomy of the species belonging to Enterobacteriaceae has undergone a series of revisions. As a consequence, the new classification has caused the analytical detection methods
to be updated. According to the European Drinking Water Directive 98/83/CE coliforms/Escherichia coli have to be determined with the ISO 9308-1 reference method. Many technical drawbacks of the procedure as well as limitations
regarding the recent taxonomy of coliforms have been pointed out by laboratories working in water quality control. In our
investigation, water was analyzed in parallel with the reference method and the rapid Colilert 18/Quanti-Tray™ system. Phenotypic
characteristics of isolates were recorded for the verification of the response of the two methods to the new taxonomic approach.
Results obtained with the ISO standard confirmed the limitations of the test. In fact, in addition to difficulties linked
to the readability of results, it failed to detect a significant proportion of coliforms and E. coli in water. Furthermore, it allowed the growth of microorganisms belonging to other groups. The Colilert 18/Quanti-Tray™ system
detected a qualitatively and quantitatively higher number of target microorganisms. It also provided results in a shorter
time, allowing the simultaneous detection of E. coli and coliforms with no further confirmation steps. 相似文献

We have analyzed midgut development during the fifth larval instar in the tobacco budworm Heliothis virescens. In prepupae, the midgut formed during larval instars undergoes a complete renewal process. This drastic remodeling of the
alimentary canal involves the destruction of the old cells by programmed cell-death mechanisms (autophagy and apoptosis).
Massive proliferation and differentiation of regenerative stem cells take place at the end of the fifth instar and give rise
to a new fully functioning epithelium that is capable of digesting and absorbing nutrients and that is maintained throughout
the subsequent pupal stage. Midgut replacement in H. virescens is achieved by a balance between this active proliferation process and cell-death mechanisms and is different from similar
processes characterized in other insects.

Retro-translocation from the ER to the cytosol of proteins within the secretory pathway takes place on misfolded molecules that are targeted for degradation by the cytosolically located 26S proteasome complex. Retro-translocation occurs also for other proteins (such as calreticulin) that, despite being synthesized and transported to the ER, are in part dislocated to the cytosol. We have taken advantage of the E. coli derived biotin-ligase (BirA) expressed in the cytosol of mammalian cells to specifically biotin-label in vivo proteins within the secretory pathway that undergo retro-translocation. We validated the method using four different proteins that are known to undergo retro-translocation upon different conditions: the human trans-membrane protein MHC class-I α chain (MHC-Iα), the Null Hong Kong mutant of the secretory α1 anti-trypsin (NHK-α1AT), the immunoglobulin heavy chain (HC) and the ER chaperone calreticulin (Crt). We observed specific mono-biotinylation of cytosolically dislocated molecules, resulting in a novel, reliable way of determining the extent of retro-translocation. 相似文献
