Purpose
To investigate the thickness of the retinal layers and to assess the prevalence of macular microcysts (MM) in the inner nuclear layer (INL) of patients with mitochondrial optic neuropathies (MON).Methods
All patients with molecularly confirmed MON, i.e. Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) and Dominant Optic Atrophy (DOA), referred between 2010 and 2012 were enrolled. Eight patients with MM were compared with two control groups: MON patients without MM matched by age, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and visual acuity, as well as age-matched controls. Retinal segmentation was performed using specific Optical coherence tomography (OCT) software (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Macular segmentation thickness values of the three groups were compared by one-way analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc corrections.Results
MM were identified in 5/90 (5.6%) patients with LHON and 3/58 (5.2%) with DOA. The INL was thicker in patients with MON compared to controls regardless of the presence of MM [133.1±7μm vs 122.3±9μm in MM patients (p<0.01) and 128.5±8μm vs. 122.3±9μm in no-MM patients (p<0.05)], however the outer nuclear layer (ONL) was thicker in patients with MM (101.4±1mμ) compared to patients without MM [77.5±8mμ (p<0.001)] and controls [78.4±7mμ (p<0.001)]. ONL thickness did not significantly differ between patients without MM and controls.Conclusion
The prevalence of MM in MON is low (5-6%), but associated with ONL thickening. We speculate that in MON patients with MM, vitreo-retinal traction contributes to the thickening of ONL as well as to the production of cystic spaces. 相似文献83.

Farnesoic acid O‐methyl transferase (FAMeT) is the enzyme involved in the penultimate step of insect juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis and is thus a key regulator in insect development and reproduction. We report the characterization of the putative‐FAMeT in the medfly or Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata. This gene was identified by suppressive subtractive hybridization and completely sequenced by the screening of a medfly cDNA library. The obtained sequence was analyzed for conserved protein domain identification and its expression profile was evaluated by quantitative Real‐Time PCR in medfly pre‐imaginal life. The tissue expression of the isolated gene was verified by in situ hybridization on third instar larvae sections. The characterization of the isolated gene pointed out several typical features of methyl transferase genes. The pre‐imaginal putative‐FAMeT expression levels were consistent with JH titer change in Diptera. As recognized in some crustaceans, this gene seems to be widely expressed in the medfly as well. Ceratitis capitata is one of the most relevant agricultural pests against which insecticides and the sterile insect technique (SIT) are extensively used in spite of the well‐known limitations of these approaches. Although results are not conclusive for the physiological role of the isolated gene, they suggest the characterization of a new gene in the Mediterranean fruit fly potentially involved in JH biosynthesis and may, therefore, have implications for pest control. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

We carried out a phylogeographic study using mtDNA (COII) for the endemic springtail Desoria klovstadi (formerly Isotoma klovstadi ) from northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Low levels of sequence divergence (≤ 1.6%) across 26 unique haplotypes (from 69 individuals) were distributed according to geographic location. Cape Hallett and Daniell Peninsula contained the highest nucleotide (both > 0.004) and haplotype (both > 0.9) diversity with 10 (of 16) and 8 (of 12) unique haplotypes, respectively. All other populations (Football Saddle, Crater Cirque, Cape Jones) had lower diversity with 2–4 unique haplotypes. Across the 69 individuals from five populations there was only a single haplotype shared between two populations (Daniell Peninsula and Football Saddle). Furthermore, nested clade analyses revealed that some of the Daniell Peninsula haplotypes were more closely related to Football Saddle haplotypes than to any other population. Such discrete haplotype groupings suggest historical (rare) dispersal across the Pleistocene (1.8 mya−11 kya) and Holocene (11 kya–present), coupled with repeated extinction, range contraction and expansion events, and/or incomplete sampling across the species range. The nested clade analyses reveal that a common pattern of climatic and geological history over long-term glacial habitat fragmentation has determined the geographic and haplotype distributions found for D. klovstadi . 相似文献

Polycomb group (PcG) and trithorax group (trxG) proteins are critical regulators of numerous developmental genes. To silence or activate gene expression, respectively, PcG and trxG proteins bind to specific regions of DNA and direct the posttranslational modification of histones. Many reports point to the existence of a network of regulatory signalling occurring in plants during the interaction with micro-organisms (biotic stress) and abiotic stresses such as wounding. However, the focus is on shared intermediates/components and/or common molecular outputs in differently triggered signalling pathways, and not on the degree and modes of effective influence between abiotic and biotic stresses nor the range of true plant-pathogen interactions open to such influence. We report on local and systemic wound-induced protection in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) to four pathogens with a range of lifestyles (Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici, Phytophthora capsici and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato). The role of ethylene (ET) in the phenomenon and in the induction by wounding of several markers of defense was investigated by using the never-ripe tomato mutant plants impaired in ET perception. We showed that PINIIb, PR1b, PR5, PR7 and peroxidase (POD) are influenced locally and/or systemically by wounding and, with the exception of POD activity, by ET perception. We also demonstrated that ET, although not essential, is positively (B. cinerea, P. capsici) or negatively (F. oxysporum, P. syringae pv. tomato) involved not only in basal but also in wound-induced resistance to each pathogen. 相似文献

This paper reports the findings of an open-top chamber experiment carried out in northern Italy (Forest nursery at Curno), during the 2004 and 2005 growth seasons, on Fagus sylvatica and Quercus robur seedlings and on Populus nigra cuttings, in order to test their photosynthesis response to ambient ozone. The experimental protocols were non-filtered air (NF), charcoal-filtered air (CF) and open air (OA). Tests performed included morphological features of leaves; development of foliar symptoms; chlorophyll content, determined by non-destructive means; chlorophyll fluorescence (direct fluorescence and JIP test) and gas exchanges and net photosynthesis (PN ). Main findings were as follows: (1) symptoms occurred early and were extensive in P. nigra , and they occurred later in F. sylvatica , whereas early degeneration of chlorophyll occurred in late summer in Q. robur ; (2) in conditions of ozone exposure, the three species all presented a decline in photosynthesis efficiency and a decrease in PN , regardless of the symptomatology they displayed; (3) leaf traits are predictors of species-specific sensitivity to ozone—the high density of Q. robur foliar tissues prevents this species from developing visible symptoms and reduces the extent of physiological responses and (4) physiological responses varied from year to year in the same species—responses were lower in the second year of the experiment, when plants had become better acclimatized to plot conditions. 相似文献
