Studies have shown that there is a relationship between zinc levels and depression. Thalassemic patients are at risk of zinc deficiency due to various causes including Desferal injection. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate hair zinc levels in thalassemic patients and their association with depression. For the purposes of this survey, 50 patients with major thalassemia between 10-20 years old were selected randomly. The patients' hair zinc concentration was compared with a control group of similarly aged healthy individuals. Simultaneously, their psychological status was evaluated with either the "Beck" or "Marya Kovacs" test (according to age) so that the relation between depression and zinc concentration could be assessed. The mean hair zinc concentration in patients was more than the controls (193.96 +/- 92.4 ppm vs 149.6 +/- 72.21 ppm). Zinc deficiency was present in 10% of the patients, and 52% had some degree of depression. There was a reverse correlation between zinc deficiency and blood transfusion rate (p < 0.05). Also, while there were more incidences of depression among the zinc deficient patients, the difference was not significant. Regarding the high prevalence of depression and insignificant relation to the zinc deficiency in these thalassemic patients, this research suggests the need for further consideration concerning patients' psychological status, the risk factors of zinc deficiency, as well as extended assessment into other causes of depression. 相似文献

Cholinesterase inhibitors find application in the combat and care of several diseases, especially AD. Jellyfish venoms are the most promising sources of potent cholinesterase inhibitors. Therefore, it is of interest to study cholinesterases inhibiting compounds from the Cassiopea andromeda venom. We report bioactive compounds using the GC-MC method followed by molecular modeling and docking data analysis. The GC-MS analysis of the crude venom led to the identification of seven bioactive compounds (C1-C7), comprising the steroidal alkaloids, phenolic and carotenoid derivatives. The venom exhibited inhibitory activities against the cholinesterase enzymes. The compound C2, a Dioxolane steroid, displayed the strongest inhibition on both AChE and BChE activities for further consideration. 相似文献

Oil-polluted soils were sampled from National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC) for isolation and screening of C–S and not
C–C targeted Dibenzothiophene (DBT) degrading microorganisms. Microbacterium sp. NISOC-06, a C–S targeted DBT degrading bacterium, was selected and its desulfurization ability was studied in aqueous phase and water-gasoline
biphasic systems. The 16srRNA gene was amplified using universal eubacteria-specific primers, PCR product was sequenced and
the sequence of nearly 1,500 bp 16srDNA was studied. Based on Gas Chromatography results Microbacterium sp. NISOC-06 utilized 94.8% of 1 mM DBT during the 2 weeks of incubation. UV Spectrophotometry and biomass production measurements showed
that the Microbacterium sp. NISOC-06 was not able to utilize DBT as a carbon source. There was no accumulation of phenolic compounds as Gibb’s assay showed. Biomass
production in a biphasic system for which DBT-enriched gasoline was used as the sulfur source indicated the capability of
Microbacterium sp. NISOC-06 to desulfurize gasoline. 相似文献
