Summary The presence of secondary sensory cells in the Octopus gravity receptor system has been demonstrated. In serial thin sections of the receptor cells (hair cells) no axons were found leaving the cells. Instead, synapses were observed with synaptic vesicles lying inside the receptor cells. Both data clearly indicate that the receptor hair cells represent secondary sensory cells. Summary Golden hamsters raised at 22°C were adapted in the early summer for 3 weeks to either 28°C or 5°C. To achieve profound changes the photoperiod was also shortened from 14 h to 11 h during adaptation to cold. During the investigation body weight, food consumption, water intake, urine production, and osmolality, as well as secreted amounts of noradrenaline (NA) and dopamine (DA), were recorded in each animal before, during, and after the adaptation period. In another group of golden hamsters the brains were processed for immunocytochemical detection of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) in the third week of adaptation to a cold or warm environment. In warm-adapted animals food and water consumption and urine production remained unchanged or were only slightly reduced. NA and DA secretion were reduced by 50%. The AVP-immunoreactivity reflected an antidiuretic state in these animals. In fibers influencing the adrenal axis, AVP-immunoreactivity was weak compared to CRF fibers. Food and water consumption, urine production, and DA secretion increased two-fold during cold adaptation. Daily secreted amounts of NA increased nine-fold. AVP-immunoreactivity was weak in projections to the neurohypophysis. Fibers influencing the adrenal axis, however, displayed strong AVP-immunoreactivity in comparison to that of CRF. The immunocytochemically determined patterns of AVP and CRF distribution indicated an activation of the osmoregulative axis in the warm-adapted animals and of the adrenal axis in the cold-adapted golden hamsters.Abbreviations

To confirm the existence of an ongoing electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern that is truly suggestive of pain, tonic heat pain was induced by small heat pulses at 1?°C above the pain threshold and compared to slightly less intense tonic non-painful heat pulses at 1?°C below the pain threshold. Twenty healthy subjects rated the sensation intensity during thermal stimulation. Possible confounding effects of attention were thoroughly controlled for by testing in four conditions: (1) focus of attention directed ipsilateral or (2) contralateral to the side of the stimulation, (3) control without a side preference, and (4) no control of attention at all. EEG was recorded via eight leads according to the 10/20 convention. Absolute power was computed for the frequency bands delta (0.5–4?Hz), theta (4–8?Hz), alpha1 (8–11?Hz), alpha2 (11–14?Hz), beta1 (14–25?Hz), and beta2 (25–35?Hz). Ratings were clearly distinct between the heat and pain conditions and suggestive for heat and pain sensations. Manipulation of attention proved to be successful by producing effects on the ratings and on the EEG activity (with lower ratings and lower EEG activity (theta, beta1, 2) over central areas for side-focused attention). During pain stimulation, lower central alpha1 and alpha2 activity and higher right-parietal and right-occipital delta power were observed compared to heat stimulation. This EEG pattern was not influenced by the manipulation of attention. Since the two types of stimuli (pain, heat) were subjectively felt differently although stimulation intensities were nearby, we conclude that this EEG pattern is clearly suggestive of pain. 相似文献

The mesoscale phytoplankton distribution was studied as partof an international joint Baltic Sea Patchiness Experiment (PEX'86)during AprilMay 1986 in the open Baltic Proper. The studyperiod covered the peak phase of the phytoplankton spring bloom.The spatio-temporal dynamics of four dominating phytoplanktonspecies, Achnanthes taeniata, Chaetoceros spp., Skeletonemacostatum and Thalassiosira levanderi were studied within anarea of 20x40 nmi with grids of 2 and 4 nmi spatial resolution.The results showed highly varying spatial distributions forall species, and the variability was accentuated on the synopticspace scale before the development of the seasonal thermocline.The maxima of Chaetoceros spp. and Thalassiosira levanderi coincidedwith the anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies prevailing in thearea. Skeletonema costatum was found in high abundances onlywithin a warmer water mass of higher salinity advecting intothe area. The results pointed out that different successionalstages can simultaneously be found even in adjacent water massesand both the phytoplankton growth and composition during thebloom peak phase in the Central Baltic depend on complex factors,mainly those connected with mesoscale hydrodynamic features(eddies, frontal zones, jet currents). 相似文献
