Climate change studies have long focused on effects of increasing temperatures, often without considering other simultaneously occurring environmental changes, such as browning of waters. Resolving how the combination of warming and browning of aquatic ecosystems affects fish biomass production is essential for future ecosystem functioning, fisheries, and food security. In this study, we analyzed individual‐ and population‐level fish data from 52 temperate and boreal lakes in Northern Europe, covering large gradients in water temperature and color (absorbance, 420 nm). We show that fish (Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis) biomass production decreased with both high water temperatures and brown water color, being lowest in warm and brown lakes. However, while both high temperature and brown water decreased fish biomass production, the mechanisms behind the decrease differed: temperature affected the fish biomass production mainly through a decrease in population standing stock biomass, and through shifts in size‐ and age‐distributions toward a higher proportion of young and small individuals in warm lakes; brown water color, on the other hand, mainly influenced fish biomass production through negative effects on individual body growth and length‐at‐age. In addition to these findings, we observed that the effects of temperature and brown water color on individual‐level processes varied over ontogeny. Body growth only responded positively to higher temperatures among young perch, and brown water color had a stronger negative effect on body growth of old than on young individuals. Thus, to better understand and predict future fish biomass production, it is necessary to integrate both individual‐ and population‐level responses and to acknowledge within‐species variation. Our results suggest that global climate change, leading to browner and warmer waters, may negatively affect fish biomass production, and this effect may be stronger than caused by increased temperature or water color alone.  相似文献

Following massive persecution and eradication, strict legal protection facilitated a successful reestablishment of wolf packs in Germany, which has been ongoing since 2000. Here, we describe this recolonization process by mitochondrial DNA control-region sequencing, microsatellite genotyping and sex identification based on 1341 mostly non-invasively collected samples. We reconstructed the genealogy of German wolf packs between 2005 and 2015 to provide information on trends in genetic diversity, dispersal patterns and pack dynamics during the early expansion process. Our results indicate signs of a founder effect at the start of the recolonization. Genetic diversity in German wolves is moderate compared to other European wolf populations. Although dispersal among packs is male-biased in the sense that females are more philopatric, dispersal distances are similar between males and females once only dispersers are accounted for. Breeding with close relatives is regular and none of the six male wolves originating from the Italian/Alpine population reproduced. However, moderate genetic diversity and inbreeding levels of the recolonizing population are preserved by high sociality, dispersal among packs and several immigration events. Our results demonstrate an ongoing, rapid and natural wolf population expansion in an intensively used cultural landscape in Central Europe.Subject terms: Conservation biology, Population genetics  相似文献

Xenogeneic or allogeneic chondrocytes hold great potential to build up new cartilage in vivo. However, immune rejection is a major concern for the utility of universal donor-derived cells. In order to verify the reported immune privilege of chondrocytes in vivo, the aim of this study was to assess engraftment of human articular chondrocytes (HAC) in minipig knee cartilage defects and their contribution to cartilage regeneration. HAC were transplanted matrix-assisted within two hydrogels into full-thickness cartilage defects of minipigs or implanted ectopically into immune deficient mice to assess redifferentiation capacity. At 2 and 4 weeks after surgery, cell-persistence and host cell invasion were monitored by species-specific in situ hybridization and RT-PCR. Early tissue regeneration was evaluated by histomorphometry and a modified O’Driscoll score. HAC capable of successful in vivo chondrogenic redifferentiation persisted at ectopic sites for 4 weeks in both carrier materials. Early defect regeneration involved extensive host cell invasion and a decline of HAC to less than 5 % of initial cell numbers in 6/12 defects within 2 weeks. Few clusters of persisting HAC within collagen type II-rich tissue were surrounded by porcine macrophages. Four weeks after cell transplantation, most of the defects contained well-integrated cell-rich tissue free of human cells with no apparent difference between hydrogel carriers. In summary, HAC failed to engraft in porcine articular cartilage defects despite their ability for successful in vivo redifferentiation. The co-localization of macrophages to hydrogel-implanted HAC suggests active graft rejection without evidence for an immune-privileged status of xenogeneic chondrocytes in a large animal joint.  相似文献

Passerine birds are important models in fundamental biological research, with as many as 300,000 individuals used in laboratory experiments worldwide annually. However, because the use of passerines is rare compared with that of more conventional laboratory animals, there is often a lack of information about the basic biology and husbandry requirements of these species. We aim to address this deficit by providing an overview of the most salient aspects of passerine biology and their implications for laboratory husbandry and welfare. We start by describing the characteristics that make these birds useful and interesting research subjects. Specifically, we highlight features (e.g., birdsong) of passerine biology that differentiate these birds from more common laboratory animals. Next, we consider the implications of passerine biology for husbandry in the laboratory. Many of the aspects of passerine biology that make these species valuable to scientists are also likely to be affected by environmental variables; a good knowledge of these variables is necessary in order to choose appropriate laboratory conditions for passerines. We outline how the developmental history of the birds and choices of caging, feeding, and environmental regimes might influence their physiology and behavior and thus affect both the welfare of the birds and the quality of the resulting data. We stress the importance of a sound understanding of the biology of any species to ensure good welfare and good science.  相似文献

The first decade: the return of the wolves Wolves returned to Saxony in the year 2000 since then they have been regularly rearing pups. Nowadays at least 60‐80 wolves are living in Germany. To face its attendant conflicts a wolf management has been installed including wolf monitoring, public relation work and damage compensation. According to the monitoring wolves feed almost completely on wild ungulates, whereas livestock does not play a major role. The wolves' natural origin from north‐eastern Poland could be proven by genetic analyses. By the use of radiotelemetry important information could be gained on the adaption of the wolves to the anthropogenic landscape.  相似文献
