Regional blood flow in rats exposed to supralethal doses of whole body X-irradiation

Relative blood flow in different organs of the supralethally (3 kR) whole body X-irradiated rat was studied using labeled 15 mu microspheres. Immediately after irradiation blood flow in brain diminishes. From 10 to 20 hrs a phase of increase in blood flowing to many parenchymal organs ensues. A second maximum 45 to 50 hrs and a third one at 60 hrs. In most organs except in brain and liver relative blood flow diminishes before death. The genesis of these changes as signs of a slowly developing shock is discussed.     

The lack of an effect of furosemide on uterine prostaglandin metabolism

We determined the effect of 2 mg/kg intravenous furosemide on the production and metabolism of prostaglandin E₂ in the utero-placental unit of pregnant dogs. Uterine venous prostaglandins E₂ and 15-keto-13,14-dihydro E₂ were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Even though the dose of furosemide was adequate to effect a good diuresis, neither the production nor the metabolism of prostaglandin E₂ by the uterus was altered by that dose of the drug. Using radioactive microspheres to measure hemodynamic parameters, we observed no change in uterine vascular resistance while renal vascular resistance decreased. Although the renal concentration of furosemide may be higher than the uteroplacental concentration, there is so far no evidence that usual doses of furosemide enhance the production or inhibit the metabolism of prostaglandin E₂.     

T-lymphocyte colony formation of murine thymocytes in agar contained in glass capillaries

Optimal growth conditions are presented for a new colony test with mouse thymocytes in agar contained in glass capillaries. The kinetics of colony growth and the dependence from the PHA-, I1-2-, agar- and 2-mercaptoethanol concentration are shown. The colony forming cells are identified as T-lymphocytes by usual morphology and by an indirect immunoperoxidase method using mouse anti-Thy 1.2 antibodies.
