Trees in the city not only have an ornamental function but also a role in improving the ecological function in urban ecosystems that has been substantially disturbed by human activities such as environmental pollution. Today the ecological role of urban greenery is clearer than ever and is included in the new scientific field of ecological engineering, which is the design of sustainable ecosystems that integrate human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both. Trees in an urban environment show many difficulties in surviving in it because the ecological conditions that exist in the cities are worse than these of the nature. One of these seems to be the heavy wind loads. But even though rough surfaces slow down the wind speed, tall buildings can cause wind tunnel effects that stress a tree as much or even more than if it was positioned in an exposed, unprotected site. An urban tree must be able to endure all the damages and loads from the wind throughout its life. The ability of a tree to withstand wind loads of gale forces depends on its shape and its dimensions. The objective of this paper is the evaluation of tree stability based on the aboveground silvicultural characteristics in order to create an empirical index which can correlate tree stability with these features. Silvicultural characteristics that play the greatest role on tree stability are crown ratio (CR), crown asymmetry index (CAI), and tree height (H). Consequently, tree stability index (TSI) is formed by them. According to TSI values, tree stability was classified in three categories (classes): high, moderate and crucial stability. The limits of the transition from one class to another, as the classes themselves are depended on the number of variables that represent silvicultural characteristics.  相似文献

The flagellum of African trypanosomes is an essential and multifunctional organelle that functions in motility, cell morphogenesis, and host-parasite interaction. Previous studies of the trypanosome flagellum have been limited by the inability to purify flagella without first removing the flagellar membrane. This limitation is particularly relevant in the context of studying flagellum signaling, as signaling requires surface-exposed proteins in the flagellar membrane and soluble signaling proteins in the flagellar matrix. Here we employ a combination of genetic and mechanical approaches to purify intact flagella from the African trypanosome, Trypanosoma brucei, in its mammalian-infectious stage. We combined flagellum purification with affinity-purification of surface-exposed proteins to conduct independent proteomic analyses of the flagellum surface and matrix fractions. The proteins identified encompass a broad range of molecular functionalities, including many predicted to function in signaling. Immunofluorescence and RNA interference studies demonstrate flagellum localization and function for proteins identified and provide insight into mechanisms of flagellum attachment and motility. The flagellum surface proteome includes many T. brucei-specific proteins and is enriched for proteins up-regulated in the mammalian-infectious stage of the parasite life-cycle. The combined results indicate that the flagellum surface presents a diverse and dynamic host-parasite interface that is well-suited for host-parasite signaling.  相似文献

Background

Later Pleistocene human evolution in East Asia remains poorly understood owing to a scarcity of well described, reliably classified and accurately dated fossils. Southwest China has been identified from genetic research as a hotspot of human diversity, containing ancient mtDNA and Y-DNA lineages, and has yielded a number of human remains thought to derive from Pleistocene deposits. We have prepared, reconstructed, described and dated a new partial skull from a consolidated sediment block collected in 1979 from the site of Longlin Cave (Guangxi Province). We also undertook new excavations at Maludong (Yunnan Province) to clarify the stratigraphy and dating of a large sample of mostly undescribed human remains from the site.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We undertook a detailed comparison of cranial, including a virtual endocast for the Maludong calotte, mandibular and dental remains from these two localities. Both samples probably derive from the same population, exhibiting an unusual mixture of modern human traits, characters probably plesiomorphic for later Homo, and some unusual features. We dated charcoal with AMS radiocarbon dating and speleothem with the Uranium-series technique and the results show both samples to be from the Pleistocene-Holocene transition: ∼14.3-11.5 ka.

Conclusions/Significance

Our analysis suggests two plausible explanations for the morphology sampled at Longlin Cave and Maludong. First, it may represent a late-surviving archaic population, perhaps paralleling the situation seen in North Africa as indicated by remains from Dar-es-Soltane and Temara, and maybe also in southern China at Zhirendong. Alternatively, East Asia may have been colonised during multiple waves during the Pleistocene, with the Longlin-Maludong morphology possibly reflecting deep population substructure in Africa prior to modern humans dispersing into Eurasia.  相似文献

The present study aimed to the investigation of the feasibility of the combined biohydrogen and biopolymers production from OMW (Olive oil Mill Wastewater), using a two stage system. H2 and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were produced via anaerobic fermentation and subsequently the acidified wastewater was used as substrate for aerobic biodegradable polymer production. Two different bioreactors, one of CSTR type and a SBR were used for the anaerobic and the aerobic process respectively. The anaerobic reactor was operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) with OMW, diluted 1:4 (v/v) with tap water, as feed. The main VFAs produced were acetate, butyrate and propionate, in different ratios depending on the HRT. Valerate, isovalerate and isobutyrate were also detected in small quantities. Selective effluents of the acidogenic/hydrogen producing reactor were subsequently used as feed for the aerobic reactor. The aerobic reactor was inoculated with an enriched PHAs producing bacteria culture, and was operated in sequential cycles of nitrogen offer (growth phase) and nitrogen limitation (PHAs accumulation phase). The operational program of the SBR was determined according to the results from batch test, and its performance was evaluated for a period of 100 days. During the accumulation phase butyrate was consumed preferably, indicating that the dominant PHA produced is polyhydroxybutyrate. The higher yield of PHAs observed was 8.94% (w/w) of dry biomass weight.  相似文献

After a wildfire in a Pinus halepensis Mill. forest, in northern Greece, the burned trees were logged and the logs were removed either by mechanical or animal traction. The effects of logging and log removal methods on soil and vegetation recovery were evaluated comparing the logged sites with a burned but unlogged site and the unburned forest. Fire and logging did not affect the soil pH and caused only a short-term reduction in organic matter content. Two years after the fire, the highest rates of soil loss were observed in the logged area where mules were used for log removal. Soil moisture showed some differences between treatments during the first year after fire but then values were similar. Logging and particularly the use of skidders for log removal caused an initial increase in the amount of exposed bare ground but later when vegetation cover increased differences were minimized. The main woody species showed a species specific response to the treatments and while seeder species were favoured in the unlogged sites the same was not true for the respouters. In general, the growth and survival of pine seedlings was not affected by treatments.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between skeletal muscle fiber type composition and the maximum number of repetitions performed during submaximal resistance exercise. Twelve young men performed a maximum repetitions test at 85% of 1 repetition maximum (1RM) in the leg press, which was repeated after 1 week. Seven days after the second 85% 1RM test, they performed a maximum repetitions test at 70% of 1RM in the leg press. This test, at 70% 1RM, was repeated 7 days later. One week before the initiation of the testing sessions, a biopsy sample was obtained from the vastus lateralis muscle and analyzed for fiber type distribution, fiber cross-sectional area, and capillary density (capillaries x mm(2)). A low and nonsignificant relationship was found between the fiber type distribution or percent fiber type area and the number of repetitions performed at either 70% or 85% 1RM. Moreover, the number of repetitions performed at 70% or 85% of 1RM was not related significantly with 1RM strength. In contrast, the number of repetitions performed at 70% 1RM was significantly correlated with the number of capillaries per mm(2) of muscle cross-sectional area (r = 0.70; p = 0.01). These results suggest that fiber type composition is not the major biological variable regulating the number of repetitions performed in submaximal resistance exercise. Rather, it seems that submaximal strength performance depends on muscle capillary density, which is linked with the endurance capacity of the muscle tissue.  相似文献

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) ligands constitute important insulin sensitizers that have already been used for the treatment of human metabolic disorders, exerting also pleiotropic effects on inflammatory related diseases and cancer. Ischemia-reperfusion injury that is mainly associated with organ transplantation constitutes a serious complication with a great relevance in clinical practice. Accumulating experimental data have recently revealed that natural and synthetic PPAR-gamma ligands exert beneficial effects against ischemia-reperfusion injury. The present review summarizes the available information on the role of PPAR-gamma ligands in ischemia-reperfusion injury amongst the different organ systems. Taking into consideration the data so far, PPAR-gamma ligands seem to represent potential therapeutic agents in the aim to reduce or even prevent injury associated with ischemia-reperfusion.  相似文献

The adaptation of an anaerobic culture (anaerobic sludge) to a specific substrate brings significant changes to its microbial population. These changes can be described by the sludge's ability to treat various substrates such as carbohydrates or proteins or "intermediate" products of anaerobic metabolism such as L-lactic, propionic, and acetic acids. The activity of the sludge with respect to a specific substrate is a critical parameter, because the anaerobic degradability of wastewaters depends strongly on it. This work examines and quantifies the differentiation of two anaerobic sludges of the same origin, following an adaptation period of about 18 months to lactose and gelatin, respectively. The acclimation has a significant effect on the maximum specific utilization rates of various compounds and on their apparent consumption kinetics. It is noticeable, however, that even if the anaerobic cultures were not exposed to a specific substrate for a prolonged period of time (more than a year), they still kept the ability of hydrolyzing or degrading it. In addition, the acclimation has an unquestionable effect on the stoichiometry of the production of volatile fatty acids and L-lactate. Finally, from codigestion experiments it is shown that codigestion of lactose and gelatin appears to have no effect on their hydrolysis kinetics in any of the lactose or gelatin acclimated cultures; specifically, the hydrolysis kinetics remained the same as calculated when lactose or gelatin were the only fed substrates. Similarly, the kinetics of L-lactate and D-glucose biodegradation seemed to be unchanged. On the other hand, codigestion has a significant effect on the production of L-lactic, propionic, and acetic acids, which can be attributed to the increased hydrogen production accompanying gelatin biodegradation.  相似文献

Bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera ssp. rotundata) is a major environmental weed of littoral habitats on the southeastern coast of Australia. This study investigates the impacts upon selected arthropod assemblages of habitat invasion by this weed. Sixteen sites were placed at four geographic localities within nature reserves between Forster and Budgewoi on the coast of New South Wales. The sampling design included two spatial scales (between and within localities) and eight repeat samples (taken at two scales of temporal separation). Arthropods were collected from both arboreal and epigaeic micro-habitats. Specimens of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), beetles (Coleoptera), true bugs (Heteroptera) and spiders (Araneae) were identified to species level. Differences in α diversity and species abundance distributions between the taxonomic assemblages are described, along with comparisons of data contrasts between bitou bush-free (“control”) and bitou bush-invaded (“impact”) habitats and between geographic localities. A subsidiary impact associated with herbicide application for control of the weed is also examined. Analysis of environmental differences indicates that bitou bush acts as a dampening agent, reducing the degree of seasonal fluctuation in factors such as leaf litter cover. Arboreal Heteroptera were the only group to show consistent evidence of significant differences in taxon richness or abundance between control and impact treatments within a locality, seen as a disruption of normal seasonal variation in diversity in bitou bush-impacted sites. Significant differences between geographic localities were more common, suggesting an effect at broader spatial scales. Evidence for arthropod assemblages characteristic of specific vegetation types was detected for several groups, as were changes in arthropod assemblage composition following application of herbicide for bitou bush control.  相似文献
