The effect of lethal and superlethal doses of ionizing radiation (0.206, 0.309, and 9.288 C/kg) on ATPase activity of rat brain mitochondria has been investigated. The study of the dose dependence of the incidence of chromosome aberrations in a human lymphocyte culture exposed at the G0 stage to pulsed neutrons of 0.7 MeV revealed no significant distinctions in the cytogenetic effect at the pulse frequency of 1 and 5 Hz, but at 100 Hz it was somewhat increased. In experiments with human blood lymphocyte culture exposed to fast protons, deuterons and helium ions the frequency and types of chromosome aberrations have been studied. Fast charged particles of a relativistic energy are shown to have a pronounced harmful effect resulting in a sharply increased formation of exchange chromosome aberrations as compared to that produced by gamma-radiation.
