Recent advances in human neuroimaging have shown that it is possible to accurately decode a person's conscious experience based only on non-invasive measurements of their brain activity. Such 'brain reading' has mostly been studied in the domain of visual perception, where it helps reveal the way in which individual experiences are encoded in the human brain. The same approach can also be extended to other types of mental state, such as covert attitudes and lie detection. The expression of the ubiquitin related protein Nedd8/RUB is essential for growth in most organisms. Nedd8/RUB has been shown to modify the cullin subunit of culling-based ubiquitin protein ligases (E3). Neddylation acts to regulate the function of these E3s and organisms with lesions in the neddylation process exhibit severe growth defects. In this review we describe the proteins that participate in neddylation and discuss a model for Nedd8/RUB regulation of ubiquitin ligase function. 相似文献

The isolation and identification of two metabolites of vitamin D2 found in mammalian and avian species are reported. They are 24-hydroxyvitamin D2 and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D2. Their existence suggests that 24-hydroxylation occurs in a sterospecific manner in the 24R position and adds further support to the theory that vitamin D2 metabolism qualitatively parallels that of vitamin D3. 相似文献

How the brain constructs a coherent representation of the environment from noisy visual input remains poorly understood. Here, we explored whether awareness of the stimulus plays a role in the integration of local features into a representation of global shape. Participants were primed with a shape defined either by position or orientation cues, and performed a shape-discrimination task on a subsequently presented probe shape. Crucially, the probe could either be defined by the same or different cues as the prime, which allowed us to distinguish the effect of priming by local features and global shape. We found a robust priming benefit for visible primes, with response times being faster when the probe and prime were the same shape, regardless of the defining cue. However, rendering the prime invisible uncovered a dissociation: position-defined primes produced behavioural benefit only for probes of the same cue type. Surprisingly, orientation-defined primes afforded an enhancement only for probes of the opposite cue. In further experiments, we showed that the effect of priming was confined to retinotopic coordinates and that there was no priming effect by invisible orientation cues in an orientation-discrimination task. This explains the absence of priming by the same cue in our shape-discrimination task. In summary, our findings show that while in the absence of awareness orientation signals can recruit retinotopic circuits (e.g. intrinsic lateral connections), conscious processing is necessary to interpret local features as global shape. 相似文献

Cannulas were implanted to collect bile and pancreatic juice, and the collected secretions were pumped back into the intestine at the level of the duodenum or the proximal ileum. The effect of 6 days of such treatment on pancreatic secretion and on pancreatic growth was determined. The effect on pancreatic secretion was studied by measuring the pancreatic secretory response to a stimulus, provided by acute diversion of bile-pancreatic juice from the proximal intestine. Trophic effects were studied in a separate group of rats by measuring pancreatic weight, protein content, and chymotrypsin activity after an overnight fast. Stimulated pancreatic secretion was 2.1 times greater for protein output and 3.4 times greater for fluid output in rats with chronic diversion of bile-pancreatic juice to the ileum. Pancreatic weight, protein content, and chymotrypsin activity were increased 2.6, 2.9, and 4.8 times, respectively, by chronic diversion of bile-pancreatic juice to the ileum. These results indicate that pancreatic hypertrophy and hyperplasia reported in rats with bile-pancreatic duct transposition to the ileum are the result of loss of feed-back inhibition from bile-pancreatic juice in the proximal intestine. 相似文献
