Tree growth has been hypothesized to provide a reliable indicator of the state of the external environment. Elevated levels of background ionizing radiation may impair growth trajectories of trees by reducing the annual growth. Such effects of radiation may depend on the individual phenotype and interact with other environmental factors such as temperature and drought. We used standardized growth rates of 105 Scots pine Pinus sylvestris located near Chernobyl, Ukraine, varying in the level of background radiation by almost a factor 700. Mean growth rate was severely depressed and more variable in 1987–1989 and several other subsequent years, following the nuclear accident in April 1986 compared to the situation before 1986. The higher frequency of years with poor growth after 1986 was not caused by elevated temperature, drought or their interactions with background radiation. Elevated temperatures suppressed individual growth rates in particular years. Finally, the negative effects of radioactive contaminants were particularly pronounced in smaller trees. These findings suggest that radiation has suppressed growth rates of pines in Chernobyl, and that radiation interacts with other environmental factors and phenotypic traits of plants to influence their growth trajectories in complex ways.  相似文献

We describe herein the synthesis of (rac)‐ or enantiopure (S)‐(?)‐(2‐MeBu)N(Pr)2MeI ammonium salts. These racemic and enantiopure ammonium salts were used as cationic templates to obtain new two‐dimensional (2D) ferromagnets [(rac)‐(2‐MeBu)N(Pr)2Me][MnCr(C2O4)3] and [(S)‐(?)‐(2‐MeBu)N(Pr)2Me][ΔMnΛ nCr(C2O4)3]. The absolute configuration of the hexacoordinated Cr(III) metallic ion in the enantiopure 2D network was determined by a circular dichroism measurement. The structure of [(2‐MeBu)N(Pr)2Me][MnCr(C2O4)3], established by single crystal X‐ray diffraction, belongs to the chiral P63 space group. The rDNA sequencing data obtained during the last 5 years in several laboratories clearly demonstrate that within the heterogeneous genus Kluyveromyces there is a group of highly related species, which we refer to as the genus Zygofabospora Kudriavzev 1960 emend. G. Naumov 2002. This genus includes four hybridizing species, Zf. marxiana, Zf. dobzhanskii, Zf. lactis, Zf. wickerhamii (Zygofabospora sensu stricto), and two taxonomically related species, Zf. aestuarii, Zf. nonfermentans (Nagahama et al.) G. Naumov comb. nov. (Zygofabospora sensu lato). We studied the relationships of the yeasts composing the Zf. lactis complex. Genetic hybridization analysis and molecular karyotyping revealed partial genetic-isolation varieties, Zf. lactis var. drosophilarum (Shehata et al.) G. Naumov comb. nov. and Zf. lactis var. phaseolospora (Shehata et al.) G. Naumov comb. nov. from North America, and Zf. lactis var. krassilnikovii (Kudriavzev) G. Naumov comb. nov. from Europe. The dairy yeast Zf. lactis var. lactis G. Naumov comb. nov. yields highly fertile hybrids with its wild ancestor Zf. lactis var. krassilnikovii and semi-sterile hybrids with North American taxa. Besides, Zf. lactis var. lactis and Zf. lactis var. krassilnikovii formed fertile hybrids with the South African yeast Zf. lactis var. vanudenii (van der Walt et Nel) G. Naumov comb. nov. The reinstatement of the latter yeast at the variety level has been done taking into account the results of the present study and the literature data on its geographic isolation, high divergence of the karyotype and mitochondrial DNA.  相似文献

The orientation growth of coleoptiles of dark-grown seedlings of rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Marder II), when grown under various conditions, was analysed with respect to the gravivector ('gravitropic setpoint angle', GSA). Coleoptiles growing through moist vermiculite attain and maintain a GSA with an average of about 180 degrees, i.e. a vertical orientation. Seedlings growing uncovered either on the surface of vermiculite or positionally fixed on filter paper attain and maintain a GSA of 140-150 degrees (i.e. deviating from the vertical by an average of 30-40 degrees ). Changing the position of the embryo relative to the horizontally fixed seed kernel or of the angle of the seed with respect to gravity during germination (+/-40 degrees relative to the horizontal) had no significant effect on the subsequent GSA of both covered and uncovered seedlings. The GSA of uncovered coleoptiles could be restored close to 180 degrees by treatment of the seedlings with ethylene, either applied via ethephon or 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) as well as by fruit-released ethylene. The results are discussed with respect to the mechanism of the regulation of gravitropic growth of grass seedlings.  相似文献

This study examined Ca2+ handling mechanisms involved in cardioprotection induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) against ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to 10% inspired O2 continuously for 6 h daily from 3, 7, and 14 days. In isolated perfused hearts subjected to I/R, CIH-induced cardioprotection was most significant in the 7-day group with less infarct size and lactate dehydrogenase release, compared with the normoxic group. The I/R-induced alterations in diastolic Ca2+ level, amplitude, time-to-peak, and the decay time of both electrically and caffeine-induced Ca2+ transients measured by spectrofluorometry in isolated ventricular myocytes of the 7-day CIH group were less than that of the normoxic group, suggesting an involvement of altered Ca2+ handling of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and sarcolemma. We further determined the protein expression and activity of 45Ca2+ flux of SR-Ca2+-ATPase, ryanodine receptor (RyR) and sarcolemmal Na+/Ca2+ exchange (NCX) in ventricular myocytes from the CIH and normoxic groups before and during I/R. There were no changes in expression levels of the Ca2+-handling proteins but significant increases in the RyR and NCX activities were remarkable during I/R in the CIH but not the normoxic group. The augmented RyR and NCX activities were abolished, respectively, by PKA inhibitor (0.5 µM KT5720 or 0.5 µM PKI14-22) and PKC inhibitor (5 µM chelerythrine chloride or 0.2 µM calphostin C) but not by Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II inhibitor KN-93 (1 µM). A novel methanol assimilating yeast species Komagataella kurtzmanii is described using the type strain VKPM Y-727 (=KBP Y-2878 = UCD-FST 76-20 = Starmer #75-208.2 = CBS 12817 = NRRL Y-63667) isolated by W.T. Starmer from a fir flux in the Catalina Mountains, Southern AZ, USA. The new species is registered in MycoBank under MB 803919. The species was differentiated by divergence in gene sequences for D1/D2 LSU rRNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, RNA polymerase subunit I, translation elongation factor-1α and mitochondrial small subunit rRNA. K. kurtzmanii differs from its phenotypically similar sibling species Komagataella pastoris, Komagataella pseudopastoris, Komagataella phaffii, Komagataella populi and Komagataella ulmi by absence of growth at 35 °C and inability to assimilate trehalose.  相似文献
