Photoadaptation of sea-ice microalgae in the Barents Sea   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0  
Summary Variations in under-ice scalar irradiance, P vs I parameters and the CHLa C–1 ratio of natural assemblages of sea-ice microalgae from the Barents Sea growing at -1.8°C in May and September 1988 are described, including one diurnal station. CHLa C–1 ratios of 0.031–0.071 mg mg–1 indicate shade adaptated assemblages both in May and September. Values for B (photosynthetic efficiency) were generally low, e.g. 0.0025–0.0078 mg C (mg CHLa)–1 h–1 (mol m–2 s–1)–1, and should be typical for self-shaded algae in mats or aggregates of about 4 mm thickness. Provided no self shading and the typical spectral distribution of light under ice without algae, B would, however, be about 2.5 times higher. Photoinhibition of the photosynthetic response was negligible. Maximum carbon uptake P m B was 0.15–0.24 and 0.032–0.088 mg C (mg CHLa)–1 h–1 in May and September, respectively. Diurnal variations were small, particularly for P m B . Calculations of the maximum specific gross growth rate yielded an upper limit of 0.20–0.24 and 0.01–0.04 d–1 for assemblages in May and September, respectively; the latter may have been in a resting stage.Contribution No. 245, Trondhjem Biological Station  相似文献

An in vitro study of the embryonic stages of Daphnia pulex deGeer was carried out by way of removing and isolating eggs fromthe females. The temperature-dependent development rates andthe developmental features were recorded photographically. Thetotal development time was 351 h at 5°C, 161 h at 10°Cand 87 h at 15°C. The relative times of development of embryonic‘stages’ also showed significant variation betweentemperatures. Aquaculture has brought about increased interest in mass production of marine fish larvae. Problems such as poor egg quality and mass mortality of fish larvae have been prevalent. The intensive incubation techniques that often result in bacterial overgrowth on fish eggs could affect the commensal relationship between the indigenous microflora and opportunistic pathogens and subsequently hamper egg development, hatching, larval health, and ongrowth. Little information about the adherent microflora on fish eggs is available, and the present study was undertaken to describe the microbial ecology during egg development and hatching of two fish species of potential commercial importance in marine aquaculture. Attachment and development of the bacterial flora on cod (Gadus morhua L.) eggs from fertilization until hatching was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The adherent microflora on cod (G. morhua L.) and halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) eggs during incubation was characterized and grouped by cluster analysis. Marked bacterial growth could be demonstrated 2 h after fertilization, and at hatching eggs were heavily overgrown. Members of the genera Pseudomonas, Alteromonas, Aeromonas, and Flavobacterium were found to dominate on the surface of both cod and halibut eggs. The filamentous bacterium Leucothrix mucor was found on eggs from both species. While growth of L. mucor on halibut eggs was sparse, cod eggs with a hairy appearance due to overgrowth by this bacterium close to hatching were frequently observed. Vibrio fischeri could be detected on cod eggs only, and pathogenic vibrios were not detected. Members of the genera Moraxella and Alcaligenes were found only on halibut eggs. Caulobacter and Seliberia spp. were observed attached to eggs dissected from cod ovaries under sterile conditions, indicating the presence of these bacteria in ovaries before spawning. Adherent strains did not demonstrate antibiotic resistance above a normal level. Attempts to regulate the egg microflora by incubation of gnotobiotic eggs with defined antibiotic-producing strains did not result in persistent protection against subsequent colonization by the microflora of the incubator.  相似文献

We investigated the level of parasitism, egg mimicry and breeding success of cuckoos parasitising four sympatric species of Acrocephalus warblers in southern Moravia, Czech Republic. The parasitism rate was highest in the marsh warbler Acrocephalus palustris (44.8%) followed by great reed warbler A. arundinaceus (33.8%), sedge warbler A. schoenobaenus (26.5%) and reed warbler A. scirpaceus (11.6%). Although the cuckoo eggs showed a high level of mimicry the eggs of the marsh warbler this host species rejected 72% of the cuckoo eggs, resulting in a cuckoo breeding success of only 4.3%. Cuckoo eggs laid in great reed warbler and reed warbler nests showed a similar hatching success, but the cuckoo chicks survived better in great reed warbler nests, resulting in a breeding success of 30.4%, as compared to 16.4% in nests of the reed warbler. The relationship between the level of parasitism, host rejection of cuckoo eggs, cuckoo chick survival and breeding success is discussed for the four host species.  相似文献

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) encompasses many different populations or stocks, which in part are managed separately. In the northeast Atlantic cod is divided into two main management units; northeast Arctic cod and coastal cod. These two groups have traditionally been separated by otolith classification. In this study, the power of different classes of genetic markers in separating the two cod groups was investigated. The variation in thirteen genetic markers, including allozymes, haemoglobin, the scDNA locus Pantophysin (Pan I) and a number of microsatellites was investigated, and mixed stock analysis and individual assignment tests were performed on samples comprising a mixture of individuals of putative coastal and oceanic type cod. The genetic analyses showed a large genetic differentiation between outer stations and stations located closer to the mainland shore. Mixed stock analysis and individual assignment tests used for estimation of stock proportions gave results similar to those obtained by otolith classification. Guest editors: J. Davenport, G. Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury subsequent to asphyxia represents a major cause of morbidity and death in the newborn. The newborn brain has been considered more resistant to hypoxia than the adult brain because of lower energy demand. The mechanisms underlying hypoxic brain injury, in particular the age-related vulnerability, are still only partially understood. The mitochondrial function is pivotal for the function and survival of neurons. Acutely isolated CA1 neurons from neonatal (3-6 days) and adult rats (5-6 weeks) were loaded with Rh 123, and the effect of hypoxia on the inner mitochondrial membrane potential (Delta psi(m)) was compared. During prolonged hypoxia (15 min), Delta psi(m) was lost in a majority of the neonatal neurons (83%) and in all the adult neurons. During hypoxia (5 min) followed by reoxygenation the mitochondria in 23% of the neonatal neurons were completely depolarized, whereas 85% of the adult neurons demonstrated a complete loss of Delta psi(m). In conclusion hippocampal CA1 mitochondria in the newborn rat are more resistant to hypoxic depolarization than in the adult rat.  相似文献

A comparison of resistance running, normal sprint running, and supramaximal running was performed. Nineteen young, generally well-trained subjects were divided into 3 training groups: resistance, normal, and supramaximal groups. Resistance and supramaximal training was done using a towing device, providing extra resistance or propulsion forces, resulting in running speed differences of about 3.3% (supramaximal) and 8.5% (resistance), compared to normal sprinting. The training period was 6 weeks, with 3 training sessions per week (5 sprint-runs over 22 m). Running times were measured using photocells, and average step length and cadence were recorded by digital video. A small (0.5%) but significant (p < 0.05) overall pre-post difference was found in running velocity, but the 3 groups changed differently over the running conditions. All individual subjects improved sprinting velocity most on the trained form, at 1-2% (p < 0.001), and thus, the principle of velocity specificity in sprint training was supported. This indicates that to obtain short-distance sprinting improvement in a short period of time, one may prefer normal sprinting over other training forms.  相似文献

Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved pathway responsible for degradation of cytoplasmic material via the lysosome. Although autophagy has been reported to contribute to cell death, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we show that autophagy controls DNA fragmentation during late oogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster. Inhibition of autophagy by genetically removing the function of the autophagy genes atg1, atg13, and vps34 resulted in late stage egg chambers that contained persisting nurse cell nuclei without fragmented DNA and attenuation of caspase-3 cleavage. The Drosophila inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) dBruce was found to colocalize with the autophagic marker GFP-Atg8a and accumulated in autophagy mutants. Nurse cells lacking Atg1 or Vps34 in addition to dBruce contained persisting nurse cell nuclei with fragmented DNA. This indicates that autophagic degradation of dBruce controls DNA fragmentation in nurse cells. Our results reveal autophagic degradation of an IAP as a novel mechanism of triggering cell death and thereby provide a mechanistic link between autophagy and cell death.  相似文献

70 kDa heat shock proteins (Hsp70s) act as molecular chaperones involved in essential cellular processes such as protein folding and protein transport across membranes. They also play a role in the cell’s response to a wide range of stress conditions. The Arabidopsis family of Hsp70s homologues includes two highly conserved proteins, cpHsc70-1 and cpHsc70-2 which are both imported into chloroplasts (Su and Li in Plant Physiol 146:1231–1241, 2008). Here, we demonstrate that YFP-fusion proteins of both cpHsc70-1 and cpHsc70-2 are predominantly stromal, though low levels were detected in the thylakoid membrane. Both genes are ubiquitously expressed at high levels in both seedlings and adult plants. We further show that both cpHsc70-1 and cpHsc70-2 harbour ATPase activity which is essential for Hsp70 chaperone activity. A previously described T-DNA insertion line for cpHsc70-1 (ΔcpHsc70-1) has variegated cotyledons, malformed leaves, growth retardation, impaired root growth and sensitivity to heat shock treatment. In addition, under stress conditions, this mutant also exhibits unusual sepals, and malformed flowers and sucrose concentrations as low as 1% significantly impair growth. cpHsc70-1/cpHsc70-2 double-mutants are lethal. However, we demonstrate through co-suppression and artificial microRNA (amiRNA) approaches that transgenic plants with severely reduced levels of both genes have a white and stunted phenotype. Interestingly, chloroplasts in these plants have an unusual morphology and contain few or no thylakoid membranes. Our data show that cpHsc70-1 and cpHsc70-2 are essential ATPases, have overlapping roles and are required for normal plastid structure.  相似文献
