Three-dimensional geometrical and mechanical modelling of the lumbar spine.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The main objective of this study is to design a three-dimensional geometrical and mechanical finite element model of the lumbar spine. The model's geometry is constructed using six parameters per vertebra. These parameters are digitized from two X-rays (anterio-posterior and lateral), thus yielding an individualized model which can be arrived at from the radiographs of a tested specimen. This procedure makes the model validation easier, as geometry is generally a factor of dispersion in experimental results. The geometrical reconstruction, in the form of a finite elements mesh, was effected for the whole lumbar spine. The global coherence of the model was verified.  相似文献

St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) cv FX-313 was used as a model laboratory host for monitoring population growth of the sting nematode, Belonolaimus longicaudatus, and for quantifying the effects of sting nematode parasitism on host performance in two samples of autoclaved native Margate fine sand with contrasting amounts of organic matter (OM = 7.9% and 3.8%). Following inoculation with 50 Belonolaimus longicaudatus per pot, nematodes peaked at a mean of 2,139 nematodes per pot 84 days after inoculation, remained stable through 168 days at 2,064 nematodes per pot, and declined at 210 days. The relative numbers of juveniles and adults demonstrated senescence after 84 days. Root dry weight of nematode-inoculated plants increased briefly to an apparent equilibrium 84 days after inoculation, whereas root weights of uninoculated controls continued to increase, exceeding those of inoculated plants from 84 to 210 days (P < 0.01). At 210 days, uninoculated plants had 227% the root dry weight of inoculated plants. Transpiration of FX-313 was reduced by nematodes (P < 0.0001) at 84 and 126 days after inoculation; reduction was first observed at 42 days and last observed 168 days after inoculation (P < 0.05). OM content affected all plant performance variables at multiple dates, and generally there were no inoculation x OM content interactions. OM content had no effect on nematode numbers per pot, although there was a slight (P < 0.05) increase in the number of nematodes per gram root dry weight in the low-OM soil compared with the high-OM soil.  相似文献

Papio hamadryas was surveyed throughout its range in Saudi Arabia and was observed at altitudes ranging from 0 to 2300 m. Wild populations occur along the whole range of altitude, while commensal populations are only found above 850 m altitude. No variation in group size was found with altitude. Comparison of wild and commensal populations showed the following. (1) Their composition in terms of age and sex classes, overall adult sex ratios, and group size does not significantly differ. (2) Groups of both populations include, in similar proportions, three types of parties: one-male units (>70%), two-male units (>13%), and a few other units of variable composition. (3) The mean size of commensal parties is significantly larger than in the wild population; specifically one-male units are larger in the commensal population due to a larger number of females per male. Thus, female distribution in commensal groups is more inequitable than that in wild groups. (4) Finally, the number of females included in two-male units increases with altitude. These differences are discussed in terms of food availability and predator pressure and are compared with results obtained on other Arabian and Ethiopian populations.  相似文献

We describe the distribution ofPapio hamadryas in Saudi Arabia in relation to ecological constraints and recent changes in human activities and land use. Baboons are present only in the Sarawat and southern Hijaz mountains, which border the Red Sea in the southwestern region of the country. Our distribution data confirms that their range, described as of 1981, should be extended 200 km northward, from 21°40N (Taif) to 23°20N (Al Akhal). This new limit of range is not due to recent deployment of the baboons, but instead corrects inaccurate surveys by previous reporters. Ecological factors that affect baboon distribution include low annual rainfall (less than 100 mm per yr), which limits baboon range in the north and east, and the absence of suitable sleeping cliffs in the coastal plain, which limits their range in the west. Relative abundance is discussed in relation to vegetation and predator distribution. Human influence is also significant: commensal troops persist near urban centers, while agricultural development reduces baboon numbers in some regions. Habitat characteristics are discussed in comparison with similar data on the range of hamadryas in Ethiopia.  相似文献

Expression of the enzymes galactokinase, thymidine kinase, and O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase is occasionally coordinately regulated in human cell lines. We have measured the activities of these three enzymes in extracts of fibroblasts from individuals with hereditary galactokinase deficiency. These cells do not express measurable galactokinase activity. The levels of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase were in the normal range in cells from three galactokinase-deficient individuals. The activity of thymidine kinase in the affected cells was in the normal range for two of the three individuals. The reduced thymidine kinase activity in the third individual reflected the extremely poor growth of the cells in culture. Immortalization of one galactokinase-deficient cell line resulted in loss of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase activity, but the galactokinase and thymidine kinase levels remained unchanged. The data indicate that the loss of galactokinase activity in these individuals is the consequence of an alteration of gene expression which does not involve coordinate silencing with the thymidine kinase and methyltransferase loci.  相似文献

Leaf shelter-building caterpillars generate most of the force required to pull leaf surfaces together by stretching silk strands while spinning. Axially retractive forces produced by columns of stretched strands enabled caterpillars in our study to generate forces as great as 0.3 Newtons (i.e., a 30-g force). We found that caterpillar silk also contracts instantly when wetted, producing an additional, though smaller, axially retractive force. Contraction ratios (final length/ original length) of the wetted silk of 19 species ranged from 0.21 to 0.93 and were smallest among species that use their silk to make leaf shelters. Our study, the first to identify the specific sources of the energy harnessed by caterpillars to tie, roll, or fold leaves, indicates that silk properties and caterpillar behavior have coevolved to facilitate the leaf shelter-building process.  相似文献

Ventilation and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the diaphragm were recorded in unanesthetized kittens 2 and 10 wk of age during normoxia, hypercapnia (2 and 4% CO2), and hypoxia (12 and 10% O2). We measured integrated diaphragmatic EMG activity at end inspiration (DIAI) and end expiration (DIAE); the difference (DIAI-E), which represents the phasic change of the diaphragmatic activity, was considered responsible for a given tidal volume (VT). During hypercapnia, the 2-wk-old kittens increased minute ventilation (V) by increases in both VT and respiratory frequency (f), whereas the 10-wk-old kittens increased V primarily by an increase in VT. At both ages, DIAI and DIAI-E increased during hypercapnia, whereas DIAE did not change significantly. During hypoxia, in the young kittens, V and VT decreased while f increased markedly; in the older kittens, V, VT, and f did not change significantly. In kittens of both ages, DIAI increased during hypoxia; because diaphragmatic activity persisted into expiration, DIAE also increased. DIAI-E, as well as VT, was decreased in the young kittens, whereas in the older ones DIAI-E was slightly increased despite an unchanged VT. Finally, the ventilatory and diaphragmatic response to hypoxia changes with maturation in contrast to the response to hypercapnia. It is concluded that 1) the hypoxia-induced reduction of VT may result from prolongation of diaphragmatic activity into expiration, inasmuch as it induces a reduction of the phasic change of the diaphragmatic activity, and 2) because DIAI-E indirectly reflects central inspiratory output, a central mechanism should be involved in the reduced VT and V in response to hypoxia in newborns.  相似文献

The effects of hypoxia on thermoregulation and ventilatory control were studied in conscious rats before and after carotid denervation (CD). Measurements of metabolic rate (VO2), ventilation (V), shivering intensity (SI), and colonic temperature (Tc) were made in groups of eight rats subjected to three protocols. In protocols 1 and 2, at ambient temperature (Ta) of 25 and 5 degrees C, respectively, rats were exposed to normoxia and hypoxia [inspired O2 fraction (FIO2) 0.13-0.11]. In protocol 3, Ta was decreased from 25 to 5 degrees C in 30-min steps of 5 degrees C. Recordings were made in normoxia and hypoxia (FIO2 0.12). The results show that in both intact and CD rats 1) in normoxia, cold exposure increased VO2, V, and SI, and these increases were proportional to the decrease in Ta; 2) hypoxia induced only a transient decrease in SI, and, for a given Ta, VO2 was reduced whereas V and SI were increased; and 3) in CD rats, V increased less during cold exposure in both normoxia and hypoxia; VO2 and Tc were more depressed during hypoxia. It is concluded that 1) the interaction between Ta and FIO2 in the control of V is partly dependent on the carotid body afferents, 2) shivering thermogenesis may be transiently affected by hypoxia independently of the carotid body afferents, and 3) nonshivering thermogenesis may be directly inhibited by hypoxia, especially during cold exposure.  相似文献

Seventeen highly-inbred lines of Drosophila melanogaster extracted from an M' strain (in the P/M system of hybrid dysgenesis) were studied for their cytotype and the number and chromosomal location of complete and defective P elements. While most lines were of M cytotype, three presented a P cytotype (the condition that represses P-element activity) and one was intermediate between M and P. All lines were found to possess KP elements and only eight to bear full-sized P elements. Only the lines with full-sized P elements showed detectable changes in their P-insertion pattern over generations; their rates of gain and of loss of P-element sites were equal to 0.12 and 0.09 per genome, per generation, respectively. There was no correlation between these two rates within lines, suggesting independent transpositions and excisions in the inbred genomes. The results of both Southern blot analysis and in situ hybridization of probes made from left and right sides of the P element strongly suggested the presence of a putative complete P element in region 1A of the X chromosome in the three lines with a P cytotype; the absence of P copy in this 1A region in lines with an M cytotype, favours the hypothesis that the P element inserted in 1A could play a major role in the P-cytotype determination. Insertion of a defective 2 kb P element was also observed in region 93F in 9 of the 13 M lines. The regulation of the P-element copy number in our lines appeared not to be associated with the ratio of full-length and defective P elements.  相似文献
