It has been proposed that monkeys direct grooming to high-ranking individuals in an attempt to obtain agonistic support in
return. But whether these two categories of interactions are causally related has proven difficult to establish. Part of the
problem stems from the fact that in stable groups social relationships reflect an equilibrium state and that behaviors need
only be performed at low rates and long intervals to maintain the current social structure. In theory, however, if affiliative
and supportive interactions are indeed causally related, it should be possible to accentuate their temporal relation, hence
their causal dynamics. For example, destabilizing dominance relations can be expected to induce competition for status and
force individuals to deploy behavioral tactics for settling new rank relations. We experimentally induced rank reversals in
a captive group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) composed of three matrilines (A-B-C rank order). A reversed C-A-B order
composed of three individuals per matriline was maintained for 2 weeks. The results show the close temporal relation among
(i) asserting one’s rank, (ii) competing for access to dominants through affiliation and interferences in affiliation, (iii)
receiving support from dominants against lower-ranking individuals, and (iv) supporting dominants against subordinates. These
findings are compatible with one version of the affiliation-for-support hypothesis, namely that monkeys affiliate with dominants
as a way to assert their position in the hierarchy. In a functional perspective, mutual selfishness provides a better explanation
than reciprocal altruism because the possibility that both groomers and supporters derive immediate net benefits cannot be

It has been observed experimentally that cells from failing hearts exhibit elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon increases in energetic workload. One proposed mechanism for this behavior is mitochondrial Ca2+ mismanagement that leads to depletion of ROS scavengers. Here, we present a computational model to test this hypothesis. Previously published models of ROS production and scavenging were combined and reparameterized to describe ROS regulation in the cellular environment. Extramitochondrial Ca2+ pulses were applied to simulate frequency-dependent changes in cytosolic Ca2+. Model results show that decreased mitochondrial Ca2+uptake due to mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter inhibition (simulating Ru360) or elevated cytosolic Na+, as in heart failure, leads to a decreased supply of NADH and NADPH upon increasing cellular workload. Oxidation of NADPH leads to oxidation of glutathione (GSH) and increased mitochondrial ROS levels, validating the Ca2+ mismanagement hypothesis. The model goes on to predict that the ratio of steady-state [H2O2]m during 3Hz pacing to [H2O2]m at rest is highly sensitive to the size of the GSH pool. The largest relative increase in [H2O2]m in response to pacing is shown to occur when the total GSH and GSSG is close to 1 mM, whereas pool sizes below 0.9 mM result in high resting H2O2 levels, a quantitative prediction only possible with a computational model. 相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of Frankia strains infective on Gymnostoma with other Frankia strains was analyzed. Partial sequencing of the 16S rDNA and use of specific primers showed that the Frankia strains present in Gymnostoma are phylogenetically close to Elaeagnus-infective strains. This finding was confirmed by using the sequences of the hypervariable nifDK intergenic spacer. The strains present in Gymnostoma nodules were close to one another. Clustered with Elaeagnus-infective strains, and distantly related to Casuarina and Alnus-infective strains. Morphological observations of strains and cross-inoculation trials showed that Gymnostoma-infective strains are indistinguishable from Elaeagnus-infective strains. Results of both phenotypic and genotypic approaches indicate that Gymnostoma-infective strains are Elaeagnus infective and not Casuarina infective. 相似文献

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) can protect organisms from freezing injury by adsorbing to ice and inhibiting its growth. We describe here a method where ice, grown on a cold finger, is used to selectively adsorb and purify these ice-binding proteins from a crude mixture. Type III recombinant AFP was enriched approximately 50-fold after one round of partitioning into ice and purified to homogeneity by a second round. This method can also be used to purify non-ice-binding proteins by linkage to AFP domains as demonstrated by the recovery of a 50 kDa maltose-binding protein-AFP fusion from a crude lysate of Escherichia coli. 相似文献

On the basis of phenotypical characteristics and analysis of 16S rRNA sequence, a new species belonging to a new genus is described, and the name Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus is proposed. This organism, isolated from Mediterranean seawater near a petroleum refinery, is a gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium. It grows at NaCl concentrations of 0.08 to 3.5 M and uses various hydrocarbons as the sole source of carbon and energy. Its DNA has a guanine-plus-cytosine content of 52.7 mol%. The 16S rRNA analysis shows a clear affiliation between M. hydrocarbonoclasticus and the gamma group of the phylum Proteobacteria. A close phylogenetic relationship appears among the species Marinomonas vaga, Oceanospirillum linum, Halomonas elongata, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Because of the impossibility of finding a single most closely related species, we suggest that this bacterium be assigned to a new genus, at least temporarily. The possibility of a revision of this status when new data appear is, however, not excluded. The type strain is M. hydrocarbonoclasticus SP.17 (= ATCC 49840). 相似文献

Information on the conformation of proteins adsorbed to an oil–water interface is usually determined by following the time course of enzymatic hydrolysis of the protein in an oil-in-water emulsion. Unlike previous works reported in the literature, the research presented in this paper provides information on which peptides are actually in contact with the lipid bilayer (interfacial peptides) and those segments that project into the aqueous phase (serum peptides). In order to achieve this classification of peptides, we present a method to separate serum peptides from interfacial peptides by initial centrifugation steps followed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The effectiveness of the method was ascertained by performing proteolysis on β-lactoglobulin adsorbed to an oil-water interface in a soybean oil-water emulsion. It was found that more peptides are qualitatively and quantitatively found adsorbed to the oil–water interface as compared to peptides released into the serum. 相似文献

Equisetum variegatum Schleicher is a circumboreale species of horsetail. In France, it typically grows at high elevations but is very rare in lowlands. The genetic variation of these populations is described using isozyme electrophoresis and PCR-RFLP of chloroplast DNA. Sampled sites were chosen to represent central vs. marginal and/or endangered parts of the distribution area. Extensive clonal multiplication of plants together with the absence of local recruitment by sexual reproduction seem to be responsible for the low genetic diversity observed within populations. Since adaptive response to environmental changes ultimately relies on the presence of genetic variability, clonal populations of E. variegatum may be particularly vulnerable to disturbance. Moreover, in lowland populations, isolation gives no chance to recover new genotypes through migration events. The preservation of the two endangered populations is proposed by propagation by cuttings of all extant genetic individuals. In the case of a disappearance of one genotype in the field, a replacement will be possible. This plan may be sufficient to preserve E. variegatum in the French lowland for several years. 相似文献
