Two recent, independent advances in ecology have generated interest and controversy: the development of neutral community models (NCMs) and the extension of biogeographical relationships into the microbial world. Here these two advances are linked by predicting an observed microbial taxa-volume relationship using an NCM and provide the strongest evidence so far for neutral community assembly in any group of organisms, macro or micro. Previously, NCMs have only ever been fitted using species-abundance distributions of macroorganisms at a single site or at one scale and parameter values have been calibrated on a case-by-case basis. Because NCMs predict a malleable two-parameter taxa-abundance distribution, this is a weak test of neutral community assembly and, hence, of the predictive power of NCMs. Here the two parameters of an NCM are calibrated using the taxa-abundance distribution observed in a small waterborne bacterial community housed in a bark-lined tree-hole in a beech tree. Using these parameters, unchanged, the taxa-abundance distributions and taxa-volume relationship observed in 26 other beech tree communities whose sizes span three orders of magnitude could be predicted. In doing so, a simple quantitative ecological mechanism to explain observations in microbial ecology is simultaneously offered and the predictive power of NCMs is demonstrated. 相似文献

Photosynthetic dinoflagellates contain a diverse collection of plastid types, a situation believed to have arisen from multiple endosymbiotic events. In addition, a number of heterotrophic (phagotrophic) dinoflagellates possess the ability to acquire chloroplasts temporarily by engulfing algae and retaining their chloroplasts in a functional state. These latter relationships typically last from a few days to weeks, at which point the chloroplasts lose function, are digested and replaced with newly acquired plastids. A novel and abundant dinoflagellate related to the icthyotoxic genera Karenia and Karlodinium was recently discovered by us in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Sequencing of its plastid small subunit ribosomal gene indicated that it did not share evolutionary history with the plastids of Karenia or Karlodinium, but was closely related to the free-living haptophyte Phaeocystis antarctica, a species that often dominates phytoplankton blooms in the Ross Sea. Chloroplast uptake was observed to occur rapidly (within 2 days), with retention in cultures being long-lived (several months) but not permanent. The dinoflagellate was also incapable of growing indefinitely in continuous darkness with algae as prey. Our findings may indicate an emerging endosymbiotic event yielding a dinoflagellate that is presently neither purely phototrophic nor purely heterotrophic, but occupies a niche juxtaposed between these contrasting nutritional modes. 相似文献

Under different environmental conditions, hybridization between the same species might result in different patterns of genetic admixture. Particularly, species pairs with large distribution ranges and long evolutionary history may have experienced several independent hybridization events over time in different zones of overlap. In birds, the diverse hybrid populations of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the Spanish sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis) provide a striking example. Throughout their range of sympatry, these two species do not regularly interbreed; however, a stabilized hybrid form (Passer italiae) exists on the Italian Peninsula and on several Mediterranean islands. The spatial distribution pattern on the Eurasian continent strongly contrasts the situation in North Africa, where house sparrows and Spanish sparrows occur in close vicinity of phenotypically intermediate populations across a broad mosaic hybrid zone. In this study, we investigate patterns of divergence and admixture among the two parental species, stabilized and nonstabilized hybrid populations in Italy and Algeria based on a mitochondrial marker, a sex chromosomal marker, and 12 microsatellite loci. In Algeria, despite strong spatial and temporal separation of urban early‐breeding house sparrows and hybrids and rural late‐breeding Spanish sparrows, we found strong genetic admixture of mitochondrial and nuclear markers across all study populations and phenotypes. That pattern of admixture in the North African hybrid zone is strikingly different from i) the Iberian area of sympatry where we observed only weak asymmetrical introgression of Spanish sparrow nuclear alleles into local house sparrow populations and ii) the very homogenous Italian sparrow population where the mitogenome of one parent (P. domesticus) and the Z‐chromosomal marker of the other parent (P. hispaniolensis) are fixed. The North African sparrow hybrids provide a further example of enhanced hybridization along with recent urbanization and anthropogenic land‐use changes in a mosaic landscape. 相似文献

Flash-induced redox reactions in spinach PS II core particles were investigated with absorbance difference spectroscopy in the UV-region and EPR spectroscopy. In the absence of artificial electron acceptors, electron transport was limited to a single turnover. Addition of the electron acceptors DCBQ and ferricyanide restored the characteristic period-four oscillation in the UV absorbance associated with the S-state cycle, but not the period-two oscillation indicative of the alternating appearance and disappearance of a semiquinone at the QB-site. In contrast to PS II membranes, all active centers were in state S1 after dark adaptation. The absorbance increase associated with the S-state transitions on the first two flashes, attributed to the Z+S1ZS2 and Z+S2ZS3 transitions, respectively, had half-times of 95 and 380 s, similar to those reported for PS II membrane fragments. The decrease due to the Z+S3ZS0 transition on the third flash had a half-time of 4.5 ms, as in salt-washed PS II membrane fragments. On the fourth flash a small, unresolved, increase of less than 3 s was observed, which might be due to the Z+S0ZS1 transition. The deactivation of the higher S-states was unusually fast and occurred within a few seconds and so was the oxidation of S0 to S1 in the dark, which had a half-time of 2–3 min. The same lifetime was found for tyrosine D+, which appeared to be formed within milliseconds after the first flash in about 10% inactive centers and after the third and later flashes by active centers in Z+S3.Abbreviations Bis-Tris

The EPR spectrum of the triplet state of photosystem II reaction centers has been studied in the case of the singly reduced primary acceptor complex QAFe2+. It was demonstrated that the shape of the spectrum does not change much when the relaxation of the primary acceptor is accelerated and when magnetic interaction between the reduced quinone molecule QA and the non-heme iron Fe2+ is disrupted. This observation confirms the earlier conclusion that the anomalous shape of the EPR spectrum is due mainly to the anisotropy of the quatum yield of the triplet state. A scheme of primary events in photosystem II is discussed, which is consistent with the observed properties of the EPR spectrum of the triplet state. 相似文献

The methanogenic endosymbionts of anaerobic protists represent the only known intracellular archaea, yet, almost nothing is known about genome structure and content in these lineages. Here, an almost complete genome of an intracellular Methanobacterium species was assembled from a metagenome derived from its host ciliate, a Heterometopus species. Phylogenomic analysis showed that the endosymbiont was closely related to free‐living Methanobacterium isolates, and when compared with the genomes of free‐living Methanobacterium, the endosymbiont did not show significant reduction in genome size or GC content. Additionally, the Methanobacterium endosymbiont genome shared the majority of its genes with its closest relative, though it did also contain unique genes possibly involved in interactions with the host via membrane‐associated proteins, the removal of toxic by‐products from host metabolism and the production of small signalling molecules. Though anaerobic ciliates have been shown to transmit their endosymbionts to daughter cells during division, the results presented here could suggest that the endosymbiotic Methanobacterium did not experience significant genetic isolation or drift and/or that this lineage was only recently acquired. Altogether, comparative genomic analysis identified genes potentially involved in the establishment and maintenance of the symbiosis, as well provided insight into the genomic consequences for an intracellular archaeum. 相似文献

Flower herbivory and pollination have been described as interactive processes that influence each other in their effects on
plant reproductive success. Few studies, however, have so far examined their joint effects in natural populations. In this
paper we evaluate the influence of flower damage and pollination by the hummingbird Oreotrochilus leucopleurus on the fecundity of the Andean monkey flower Mimulus luteus. We performed a 2×2 factorial experiment, with artificial clipping of lower petals and selective exclusion of the hummingbird
as main factors. In spite of the relatively low proportion (27.5%) of the variance in seed production accounted for by the
full factorial model, artificial damage and hummingbird exclusion, as well as their interaction, were highly significant,
indicating nonadditive effects of factors on plant fecundity. In the presence of hummingbirds, undamaged flowers had a seed
production that was 1.7-fold higher than for damaged flowers, suggesting that the effect of flower damage on female reproductive
success occurs probably as a consequence of hummingbird discrimination against damaged corollas. This result indicates that
the impact of flower herbivory on plant fecundity was contingent on the presence or absence of hummingbirds, suggesting that
pollinators may indirectly select for undamaged and probably resistant flower phenotypes. A second interaction effect revealed
that undamaged flowers produced 78.5% more seeds in the absence of rather than in the presence of O. leucopleurus, raising the question of the ecological mechanism involved. We suggest that the strong territorial behavior exhibited by
the bee Centris nigerrima may confine the foraging activities of the remaining bee species to safe sites within exclosures. Overall, our results provide
evidence that hummingbird pollination and flower herbivory have interdependent effects on M. luteus fecundity, which indicates that it will be difficult to predict their ecological and evolutionary consequences unless interactions
