Several species of weakly electric fish reflexively change their frequency of electric organ discharge (EOD) in response to sensing signals of similar frequency from conspecifics; that is, they exhibit jamming avoidance responses (JAR).Eigenmannia increases its EOD frequency if jammed by a signal of lower frequency and decreases its EOD frequency if jammed by a signal of higher frequency. This discrimination is based on an analysis of the patterns of amplitude modulations and phase differences resulting from signal interference. Fish of the closely related genus,Sternopygus, however, do not exhibit a JAR. Here we show that despite lacking this behavior,Sternopygus shares many sensory processing capacities withEigenmannia:

Summary Administration of interferon as a single therapeutic regimen in cancer patients with various neoplasias has had only limited efficacy in ameliorating the negative clinical course of their disease. In the present study, we have evaluated the effect of recombinant human fibroblast (IFN) and immune (IFN) interferon, alone and in combination, on growth, differentiation and the expression of class I and II histocompatibility locus antigens (HLA) and melanoma-associated antigens on the human melanoma cell line H0-1. The effect of combinations of interferons on the antigenic profile of human melanoma cells displaying different organ colonization and spontaneous metastatic potential in athymic nude mice was also determined. H0-1 cells were more sensitive to the antiproliferative activity of IFN than to IFN and the combination of interferons resulted in a potentiation of growth suppression. The antiproliferative effect of both interferons was greater in later-passage than in earlier-passage H0-1 cells, possibly reflecting alterations in the evolving tumor cell population as a result of long-term in vitro propagation and/or the selective outgrowth of cells with an increased growth rate. The enhanced growth suppression observed in H0-1 cells treated with the combination of IFN plus IFN was not associated with a significant increase in the level of melanin, a marker of melanoma differentiation, above that observed with either interferon used alone. IFN and IFN differentially modulated the expression of class I and II HLA and melanoma-associated antigens in H0-1 cells and a series of melanoma cells with different organ colonization and metastatic potential, including MeWo, MeM 50-10, MeM 50-17, 3S5 and 70W. No consistent potentiation or antagonism in the expression of any specific antigen was observed in any of the melanoma cell lines exposed to the combination of interferons. The present study demonstrates that the combination of IFN plus IFN can potentiate growth suppression in H0-1 human melanoma cells and that this effect is not associated with an increase in differentiation or a potentiation in antigenic modulation. In addition, no direct correlation between the expression of any specific antigen or its modulation by IFN or IFN, alone or in combination, and organ colonization and metastatic potential in nude mice was observed in the different melanoma cell lines. 相似文献

The ability of three strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus to survive and retain β-galactosidase activity during storage in liquid nitrogen at −196°C and during subsequent storage in milk at 5°C was tested. The level of β-galactosidase activity varied among the three strains (0.048 to 0.177 U/107 organisms). Freezing and storage at −196°C had much less adverse influence on viability and activity of the enzyme than did storage in milk at 5°C. The strains varied in the extent of the losses of viability and β-galactosidase activity during both types of storage. There was not a significant interaction between storage at −196°C and subsequent storage at 5°C. The strains that exhibited the greatest losses of β-galactosidase activity during storage in milk at 5°C also exhibited the greatest losses in viability at 5°C. However, the losses in viability were of much greater magnitude than were the losses of enzymatic activity. This indicates that some cells of L. acidophilus which failed to form colonies on the enumeration medium still possessed β-galactosidase activity. Cultures of L. acidophilus to be used as dietary adjuncts to improve lactose utilization in humans should be carefully selected to ensure that adequate β-galactosidase activity is provided. 相似文献

Extracts of mature grains of a large number of aneuploid derivatives of Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring and of the members of five wheat-alien chromosome addition series were subjected to isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gels in order to study the genetic control of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Evidence was obtained that homologous structural genes for the mitochondrial form of SOD are located in the long arms of the homoeologous group 2 chromosomes of Chinese Spring and in chromosome 2R of Secale cereale cv. Imperial. The SOD gene loci located in chromosomes 2A, 2B, 2D, and 2R were designated Sod-A1, Sod-B1, Sod-D1, and Sod-R1, respectively. Chromosome-arm pairing data indicate that 2DL is not homoeologous to either 2AS or 2BL. The results of this study suggest, however, that 2BL is partially homoeologous to both 2AL and 2DL.Technical article No. 21074 of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. Effects of several population densities ofMeloidogyne incognita on the sweet potato cultivars Centennial (susceptible) and Jasper (moderately resistant) were studied. Field plots were infested with initial levels (Pi) of 0, 10, 100, 1,000, 5,000, and 10,000 eggs and juveniles/500 cm³ soil in 1980 and 0, 100, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, and 5,000 in 1981. M. incognita population development trends were similar on both cultivars; however, at high Pi, more eggs and juveniles were recovered from Centennial than from Jasper. The highest Pi did not result in the highest mid-season (Pm) counts. Pi was negatively correlated with the number of marketable roots and root weight but positively correlated with total cracked roots, percentage of cracked roots, and cracking severity. Jasper tolerated higher Pi with greater yields and better root quality than Centennial. Cracking of fleshy roots occurred with both cultivars at low Pi. 相似文献

The cytoplasmic resistivities and membrane breakdown potentials of normal (AA), sickle-cell-trait (AS), and sickle (SS) red
blood cells have been measured by the biophysical methodology of resistive pulse spectroscopy over a range of osmolalities.
At isotonicity, the average membrane breakdown potentials are virtually identical for the three types of cells occurring at
about 1150 V/cm. Average isotonic cytoplasmic resistivities are somewhat higher for the SS cells (166.7±7.49 ohm-cm) compared
to the AA (147.6±1.98 ohm-cm) or AS cells (148.7±1.79 ohm-cm). As medium osmolality is varied, the differences in resistive
properties become enlarged, especially at very low and very high osmolalities. At high osmolalities, both types of sickle
cells show a large increase in internal resistivity compared to the normals; at low osmolality, the SS samples exhibit a distinctly
different membrane breakdown characteristic, decreasing in this parameter, whereas the other two groups increase.
Of the 15 SS samples tested, three displayed much higher cytoplasmic resistivities at isotonicity: 218.2±5.25 ohm-cm, compared
to an average of 153.5±3.46 ohm-cm for the other 12. The relationship between these high resistivities and the subfraction

Summary Current procedures for isolating intestinal epithelial cell surface and intracellular membranes are based on the assumption that each organelle is marked by some unique constitutent. This assumption seemed inconsistent with the dynamic picture of subcellular organization emerging from studies of membrane turnover and recycling. Therefore, we have designed an alternative fractionation which is independent ofa priori marker assignments. We subjected mucosal homogenates to a sequence of separations based on sedimentation coefficient, equilibrium density, and partitioning in aqueous polymer twophase systems. The resulting distributions of protein and enzymatic markers define a total of 17 physically and biochemically distinct membrane populations. Among these are: basal-lateral membranes, with Na,K-ATPase enriched 21-fold; brush-border membranes, with alkaline phosphatase enriched as much as 38-fold; two populations apparently derived from the endoplasmic reticulum; a series of five populations believed to have been derived from the Golgi complex; and a series of five acid phosphatase-rich populations which we cannot identify unequivocally. Each of the five enzymatic markers we have followed is associated with a multiplicity of membrane populations. Basallateral, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi membranes contain alkaline phosphatase at the same specific activity as the initial homogenate. The association of two high molecular weight (HMW) structural proteins with the cytoskeletons of rat pheochromocytoma cells, PC12, is regulated by ATP and other nucleotides. Exposure of PC12 cytoskeletons to ATP resulted in the selective solubilization of two HMW proteins, identified as myosin and a 280 kD microtubule-associated protein. These two proteins were rapidly released from the cytoskeleton following incubation with ATP, GTP, CTP, and ADP; non-hydrolysable ATP analog caused protein release to a less marked extent. The effect of the latter two nucleotides indicated that the release of the myosin and the HMW microtubule-associated protein was likely to be the result of nucleotide-induced conformational changes in one or both proteins. Myosin and the HMW microtubule-associated proteins interact with actin in vitro in a nucleotide-sensitive manner. The present data demonstrate that similar interactions are likely to exist within the intact cytoskeleton and suggest that the associations of these structural proteins with the cytoskeleton are regulated by common mechanisms. The results also suggest that the cells may differentially regulate the stability of a subset of these structural proteins in their interactions with other cytoskeletal elements. 相似文献

This work describes a neutral and alkaline elution method for measuring DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs), DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs), and DNA-DNA crosslinks in rat testicular germ cells after treatments in vivo or in vitro with both chemical mutagens and gamma-irradiation. The methods depend upon the isolation of testicular germ cells by collagenase and trypsin digestion, followed by filtration and centrifugation.
137Cs irradiation induced both DNA SSBs and DSBs in germ cells held on ice in vitro. Irradiation of the whole animal indicated that both types of DNA breaks are induced in vivo and can be repaired. A number of germ cell mutagens induced either DNA SSBs, DSBs, or cross-links after in vivo and in vitro dosing. These chemicals included methyl methane sulfonate, ethyl methane sulfonate, ethyl nitrosurea, dibromochlorpropane, ethylene dibromide, triethylene melamine, and mitomycin C. These results suggest that the blood-testes barrier is relatively ineffective for these mutagens, which may explain in part their in vivo mutagenic potency.This assay should be a useful screen for detecting chemical attack upon male germ-cell DNA and thus, it should help in the assessment of the mutagenic risk of chemicals. In addition, this approach can be used to study the processes of SSB, DSB, and crosslink repair in DNA of male germ cells, either from all stages or specific stages of development.Abbreviations DBCP
