Fluxes of diatoms in the Dona Paula Bay, west coast of India   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sediment traps were deployed at a station in the Dona PaulaBay to collect sedimenting particles at weekly intervals fromNovember to May during 1995–1997. Sedimented particleswere analysed for total diatom flux, chlorophyll a (Chl a) andparticulate organic carbon (POC). The highest diatom flux wasrecorded in April–May for both the years. Fluxes of diatomsvaried from0.6 x 104 cells m–2 day–1 (November 1995)to 121.47 x 104 cells m–2 day–1 (December 1996).In all, 19 diatom genera were identified in the sedimented material.Navicula, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma, Licmophora, Coscinodiscus,Rhizosolenia and Surirella were the most abundant genera inthe sedimented material throughout the sampling period. Meanflux of POC and diatom carbon was 251 and 0.39 mg C m–2day–1, respectively. The diatom carbon accounted for 0.15%of the POC flux. Mass flux of diatoms showed significant negativecorrelation with the concentration of nitrate and phosphate.This suggests that the nutrient concentration played an importantrole in influencing the sedimentation of diatoms at this coastalstation.  相似文献

Island biogeography is one of the most powerful subdisciplines of ecology: its mathematical predictions that island size and distance to mainland determine diversity have withstood the test of time. A key question is whether these predictions follow at a population-genomic level. Using rigorous ancient-DNA protocols, we retrieved approximately 1,000 genomic markers from approximately 100 historic specimens of two Southeast Asian songbird complexes from across the Sunda Shelf archipelago collected 1893–1957. We show that the genetic affinities of populations on small shelf islands defy the predictions of geographic distance and appear governed by Earth-historic factors including the position of terrestrial barriers (paleo-rivers) and persistence of corridors (Quaternary land bridges). Our analyses suggest that classic island-biogeographic predictors may not hold well for population-genomic dynamics on the thousands of shelf islands across the globe, which are exposed to dynamic changes in land distribution during Quaternary climate change.  相似文献

Electrotransformation of Rhizobium leguminosarum was successfully carried out with a 15.1-kb plasmid, pMP154 (Cmr), containing a nodABC-lacZ fusion by electroporation. The maximum transformation efficiency, 108 transformants/μg of DNA, was achieved at a field strength of 14 kV/cm with a pulse of 7.3 ms (186 Ω). The number of transformants was found to increase with increasing cell density, with no sign of saturation. In relation to DNA dosage, the maximum transformation efficiency (5.8 × 108 transformants/μg of DNA) was obtained with 0.5 μg of DNA/ml of cell suspension, and a further increase in the DNA concentration resulted in a decline in transformation efficiency.  相似文献

Significant production of superoxide, a known reductant of both inorganic and organically complexed iron(III), occurs in natural systems by both biotic and abiotic pathways. We have investigated the generation of superoxide by Chattonella marina (Subrahman.) Y. Hara et Chihara, a phytoplankton taxon known to produce high levels of this reactive oxygen species, and examined the role of superoxide in the acquisition of iron by this organism. Additionally, a generalized model for iron acquisition by C. marina has been developed, which includes three pathways of iron acquisition from organically complexed iron(III): nondissociative reductive uptake, dissociative reductive uptake, and nonreductive dissociative uptake. The model is shown to be particularly useful in ascertaining the relative importance of these various iron‐uptake pathways as a function of solution parameters including concentration and iron‐binding strength of the organic ligand and superoxide concentration. Our results suggest that superoxide can participate in the C. marina iron‐uptake process when iron is complexed to weak ligands, such as citrate, but plays only a minor role when iron is bound to a strong ligand. It thus appears that facilitation of iron acquisition is not the sole purpose of superoxide production by these organisms.  相似文献

A plasma membrane ATPase sensitive to inhibition by N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and insensitive to inhibition by oligomycin and ouabain has been shown to be involved in acidification of urine in the turtle bladder. The activity of this NEM-sensitive ATPase was determined in four types of distal nephron segments of normal rats and in rats treated with ammonium chloride. The enzyme activity was determined by a fluorometric micromethod in which ATP hydrolysis was coupled to NADH oxidation. Significant activities (10-35 pmol ADP X min-1 X mm-1) of NEM-sensitive ATPase were present in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and in the cortical and outer and inner medullary collecting duct segments of normal rats. In metabolic acidosis produced by ammonium chloride treatment (plasma CO2 content = 15.3 +/- 0.8 mequiv./L), the NEM-sensitive ATPase activity was increased significantly (60-100%) in the collecting duct segments without showing a significant change in the enzyme activity in the DCT. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis that a plasma membrane H+-ATPase (inhibited by NEM but not by oligomycin or ouabain) is involved in H+ secretion in the mammalian collecting duct.  相似文献

To evaluate the relative contributions of three possible mechanisms that can be advanced to explain the observation that hyperoxia decreases serotonin uptake by endothelial cells, we examined the effect of high O2 tensions on Na+-K+-ATPase activity, ATP content, and plasma membrane fluidity in cultured endothelial cells. Confluent monolayers of pulmonary artery and aortic endothelial cells were exposed to 95% O2 (hyperoxia) or 20% O2 (controls) in 5% CO2 at 1 ATA for 4-42 h. Exposure to high O2 tensions had no effect on Na+-K+-ATPase activity or ATP content in pulmonary artery or aortic endothelial cells in culture. However, hyperoxia decreased the fluidity of the plasma membrane of pulmonary artery and aortic endothelial cells in culture, and the time course for the decrease in fluidity parallels that of the hyperoxic inhibition of serotonin transport. These results indicate that hyperoxia decreases fluidity in the hydrophobic core of the plasma membranes of cultured endothelial cells. Such decreases in plasma membrane fluidity may be responsible for hyperoxia-induced alterations in membrane function including decreases in transmembrane transport of amines.  相似文献

The transport of D-glucose and L-phenylalanine was measured in intestinal brush border membrane (BBM) vesicles treated with Excretory-secretory (ES) products of Giardia lamblia. Uptake was found to be significantly lower (P/0.01) in the treated vesicles than in the controls. Exposure of intestinal tissue to ES products resulted in net secretion (P/0.01) of Na+, C1- and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose. Both observations indicate that alterations in the absorptive functions of the intestine might be attributed to interaction of ES products with the BBM.  相似文献

Kinetic parameters (Km and Vmax) of renal brush border membrane (BBM) enzymes alkaline phosphatase, maltase, leucine aminopeptidase and gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase were worked out in control, infected and immunized-infected rats. There was no significant change in the Km of all the enzymes studied in three groups. The Vmax of all the enzymes studied decreased significantly (p less than 0.05) 3 or 4 days postinfection and onwards in the left obstructed kidney of infected and immunised-infected animals. However, in the right unobstructed kidney the Vmax of alkaline phosphatase and leucine aminopeptidase increased significantly (p less than 0.05) in the early stages and decreased (p less than 0.05) in later stages in both the experimental groups. The significant difference (p less than 0.05) in the Vmax of infected and immunized-infected groups at various stages of infection revealed the partial protective role of antipili antibody against ascending pyelonephritis.  相似文献
