Optimized Spatial Priorities for Biodiversity Conservation in China: A Systematic Conservation Planning Perspective 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

By addressing several key features overlooked in previous studies, i.e. human disturbance, integration of ecosystem- and species-level conservation features, and principles of complementarity and representativeness, we present the first national-scale systematic conservation planning for China to determine the optimized spatial priorities for biodiversity conservation. We compiled a spatial database on the distributions of ecosystem- and species-level conservation features, and modeled a human disturbance index (HDI) by aggregating information using several socioeconomic proxies. We ran Marxan with two scenarios (HDI-ignored and HDI-considered) to investigate the effects of human disturbance, and explored the geographic patterns of the optimized spatial conservation priorities. Compared to when HDI was ignored, the HDI-considered scenario resulted in (1) a marked reduction (∼9%) in the total HDI score and a slight increase (∼7%) in the total area of the portfolio of priority units, (2) a significant increase (∼43%) in the total irreplaceable area and (3) more irreplaceable units being identified in almost all environmental zones and highly-disturbed provinces. Thus the inclusion of human disturbance is essential for cost-effective priority-setting. Attention should be targeted to the areas that are characterized as moderately-disturbed, <2,000 m in altitude, and/or intermediately- to extremely-rugged in terrain to identify potentially important regions for implementing cost-effective conservation. We delineated 23 primary large-scale priority areas that are significant for conserving China''s biodiversity, but those isolated priority units in disturbed regions are in more urgent need of conservation actions so as to prevent immediate and severe biodiversity loss. This study presents a spatially optimized national-scale portfolio of conservation priorities – effectively representing the overall biodiversity of China while minimizing conflicts with economic development. Our results offer critical insights for current conservation and strategic land-use planning in China. Members of the Alu Yc1 subfamily are distinguished from the older Alu Y subfamily by a signature G-->A substitution at base 148 of their 281-bp consensus sequence. Members of the much older and larger Alu Y subfamily could have by chance accumulated this signature G-->A substitution and be misclassified as belonging to the Alu Yc1 subfamily. Using a Mahanalobis classification method, it was estimated that the "authentic" Alu Yc1 subfamily consists of approximately 262 members in the human genome. PCR amplification and further analysis was successfully completed on 225 of the Yc1 Alu family members. One hundred and seventy-seven Yc1 Alu elements were determined to be monomorphic (fixed for presence) in a panel of diverse human genomes. Forty-eight of the Yc1 Alu elements were polymorphic for insertion presence/absence in diverse human genomes. The insertion polymorphism rate of 21% in the human genome is similar to rates reported previously for other "young" Alu subfamilies. The polymorphic Yc1 Alu elements will be useful genetic loci for the study of human population genetics. 相似文献

A major consequence of group living is that foragers may rely on social information in addition to ecological information
to locate feeding sites. Although conspecifics can provide cues as to the spatial location of food patches, individual foraging
decisions also must include some assessment of the likelihood of obtaining access to a resource other group members seek.
This likelihood differs in the 2 models generally proposed to explain intragroup social foraging: the information-sharing
model and the producer-scrounger model. We conducted an experimental field study on wild groups of emperor (Saguinus imperator) and saddleback (S. fuscicollis) tamarins to determine the foraging strategies adopted by individual group members and their relationship to social rank, food
intake, and the ability to use ecological and social information in making intra-patch foraging decisions. Individual tamarins
applied different behavioral strategies compatible with a finder-joiner paradigm to solve foraging problems. About half of
the individuals in each study group initiated 74%–90% of all food searches and acted as finders. Most alpha individuals adopted
a joiner strategy by monitoring the activities of others' to obtain a reward. The individual arriving first at a reward platform enjoyed a finder's advantage.
Despite differences in search effort, both finders and joiners presented similar abilities in learning to associate ecological
cues with the presence of food rewards at our experimental feeding stations. We conclude that within a group foraging context,
tamarins integrate social and ecological information in decision-making. 相似文献

As a preface to an analysis of the ribosomal elongation cycle, we examine the energetics of macromolecular structural transformations. We show that the kinetic barriers and changes of the energetic levels during these transformations are essentially determined by disruption of hydrogen and cation-ligand bonds, and by uncompensated losses of these bonds (ULBs). The disruption of a hydrogen or cation-ligand bond increases the heights of kinetic barriers by the energy of these bonds. The association and dissociation of macromolecules, and conformational transitions within macromolecules, can change the numbers of ULBs but cannot completely eliminate them. Two important general conclusions are drawn from this analysis. First, occupation of enzyme active centers by substrates should be accompanied by a reduction in the number of ULBs. This reduction decreases the activation barriers in enzyme reactions, and is a major contributor to catalysis. Second, the enzymic reactions of the ribosomal cycle (structural changes caused by transpeptidation and by GTP hydrolyses in EF-Tu and EF-G) disrupt kinetic traps that prevent tRNAs from dissociating into solution during their motion within the ribosome and are necessary for progression of the cycle. These results are general purpose structural-functional blocks for building a molecular model of the ribosomal elongation cycle. The ribosomal protein L23 is a component of the large ribosomal subunit in which it is located close to the peptide exit tunnel. In this position L23 plays a central role both for protein secretion and folding. We have determined the solution structure of L23 from Thermus thermophilus. Uncomplexed L23 consists of a well-ordered part, with four anti-parallel -strands and three -helices connected as ------, and a large and flexible loop inserted between the third and fourth -strand. The observed topology is distantly related to previously known structures, primarily within the area of RNA biochemistry. A comparison with RNA-complexed crystal structures of L23 from T. thermophilus, Deinococcus radiodurans and Haloarcula marismourtui, shows that the conformation of the well-ordered part is very similar in the uncomplexed and complexed states. However, the flexible loop found in the uncomplexed solution structure forms a rigid extended structure in the complexed crystal structures as it interacts with rRNA and becomes part of the exit tunnel wall. Structural characteristics of importance for the interaction with rRNA and with the ribosomal protein L29, as well as the functional role of L23, are discussed. 相似文献

The effect of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-alpha activators on the liver is well established, but the other effects on muscle and adipose tissue about lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity are not clear. We investigated whether PPAR-alpha activation affects adiposity of skeletal muscle as well as adipose tissue and improves insulin sensitivity in spontaneous type 2 diabetes model, Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Thirty-three weeks of aged, 20 male OLETF rats were divided into two groups. Control group (n=10) was fed with chow and treatment group (n=10) with chow contained fenofibrate for 7 weeks. At the age of 40 weeks, all rats were examined with MRI, intravenous glucose tolerance test, and then sacrificed for measurement of fat mass and RNA analyses. The total fat (the sum of subcutaneous, mesenteric, epididymal, and retroperitoneal fat pads) measured by dissection was significantly reduced in treatment group. The signal intensity of muscular adiposity was significantly decreased in treatment group. The mRNA levels of FAT/CD36 and mitochondrial carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (M-CPT I) in liver were remarkably increased. Fasting plasma insulin and leptin levels, insulin response after intravenous glucose loading and homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA(IR)) index were lowered in treatment group. Fenofibrate increase mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation in liver but not in skeletal muscle and lower the plasma levels of triglyceride and free fatty acid. It might result in reduction of adiposity of truncal adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. We suggest that reduction of adiposity in trunk and skeletal muscle might improve insulin sensitivity. 相似文献

From September through November 2000 we conducted an experimental field study of tool use in a group of 15 wild white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) in Costa Rica. The problem presented to the capuchins involved the use of wooden dowels as probes to obtain a food reward (two bananas) located inside a clear Plexiglas box. Specifically, the task required the capuchins to manually insert a dowel into any of six holes drilled into the box in order to push the bananas off a shelf. The banana could then be retrieved through a large opening at the bottom of the box. The capuchins visited the tool-use platform 702 times over the course of 55 consecutive days and under several experimental conditions. During the first 21 days of the study, they explored the box but made no attempt to touch or pick up the dowels. Even after we placed the dowels in the holes, the capuchins only occasionally manipulated them. Overall, the results indicate that the capuchins did not use a tool to solve this novel foraging problem. 相似文献
