Scarcity of water causes a shift from flooded to aerobic conditions for rice production in zinc deficient areas in Northern China. This shift alters soil conditions that affect zinc availability to the crop. This paper concerns the effect of aerobic compared to flooded conditions on crop biomass production, grain yield and zinc content. A field experiment was done with six rice genotypes (Oryza sativa L.) grown on a calcareous soil, both with (23 kg Zn ha−1) and without Zn fertilization. Sampling was conducted at tillering and physiological mature stage. Zn concentration in the shoots was significantly lower at both stages in plants grown in the aerobic field. At maturity, Zn uptake, biomass production, grain yield and Zn-harvest index [grain Zn/(shoot + grain Zn)] were lower under aerobic cultivation. Rice genotypes including aerobic rice and lowland rice differ in degree of response to low Zn supply. A twofold difference was found among aerobic genotypes in grain yield and Zn uptake. Also Zn-harvest index varied significantly. Zn application affected neither grain yield nor grain Zn content, although it significantly improved biomass production in both systems in most genotypes. These results demonstrate that introduction of aerobic rice systems on calcareous soils may increase Zn deficiency problems.  相似文献

From 18 strains of cellulolytic microorganisms including bacteria and filamentous fungi, one strain of soft rot fungus identified as Chaetomium cellulolyticum was screened with respect to stronger decomposition ability of cellulose and hemicellulose and its ability for protein synthesis. As it grew on raw corn straw in solid layer fermentation (SLF) for 5 days, the amino acid content in the fermentation product attained 19.29% (w/w) from 6.43% while the total cell wall was reduced by 54%. A toxicity test with mice showed that the fermentation product is not poisonous. The two filamentous fungi, Trichoderma pseudokoningii S-38 and Penicillium decumbens JU-A10 produced large amounts of extracellular cellulase and hemicellulase in the SLF process, but their growth was limited and they sporulated profusely with regard to their value as animal feed products.  相似文献

Little is known about the significance of prey‐derived carbon backbones of amino acids for the success of Dionaea's carnivorous life‐style.
  • The present study aimed at characterizing the metabolic fate of 15N and 13C in amino acids acquired from double‐labeled insect powder. We tracked changes in plant amino acid pools and their δ13C‐ and δ15N‐signatures over a period of five weeks after feeding, as affected by contrasting feeding intensity and tissue type (i.e., fed and non‐fed traps and attached petioles of Dionaea).
  • Isotope signatures (i.e., δ13C and δ15N) of plant amino acid pools were strongly correlated, explaining 60% of observed variation. Residual variation was related to contrasting effects of tissue type, feeding intensity and elapsed time since feeding. Synthesis of nitrogen‐rich transport compounds (i.e., amides) during peak time of prey digestion increased 15N‐ relative to 13C‐ abundances in amino acid pools. After completion of prey digestion, 13C in amino acid pools was progressively exchanged for newly fixed 12C. The latter process was most evident for non‐fed traps and attached petioles of plants that had received ample insect powder.
  • We argue that prey‐derived amino acids contribute to respiratory energy gain and loss of 13CO2 during conversion into transport compounds (i.e., 2 days after feeding), and that amino‐nitrogen helps boost photosynthetic carbon gain later on (i.e., 5 weeks after feeding).

Complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase) is the largest multisubunit assembly of the oxidative phosphorylation system, and its malfunction is associated with a wide variety of clinical syndromes ranging from highly progressive, often early lethal, encephalopathies to neurodegenerative disorders in adult life. The changes in mitochondrial structure and function that are at the basis of the clinical symptoms are poorly understood. Video-rate confocal microscopy of cells pulse-loaded with mitochondria-specific rhodamine 123 followed by automated analysis of form factor (combined measure of length and degree of branching), aspect ratio (measure of length), and number of revealed marked differences between primary cultures of skin fibroblasts from 13 patients with an isolated complex I deficiency. These differences were independent of the affected subunit, but plotting of the activity of complex I, normalized to that of complex IV, against the ratio of either form factor or aspect ratio to number revealed a linear relationship. Relatively small reductions in activity appeared to be associated with an increase in form factor and never with a decrease in number, whereas relatively large reductions occurred in association with a decrease in form factor and/or an increase in number. These results demonstrate that complex I activity and mitochondrial structure are tightly coupled in human isolated complex I deficiency. To further prove the relationship between aberrations in mitochondrial morphology and pathological condition, fibroblasts from two patients with a different mutation but a highly fragmented mitochondrial phenotype were fused. Micro- and nanometallic structures that exhibit extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) have attracted much attention for their potential applications in photonic devices. However, most existing reports have only discussed EOT at one specific wavelength, which limits its use in multi-wavelength applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate EOT at multiple wavelengths through an asymmetric corrugated thin silver film due to simultaneous excitation of multiple plasmonic resonances at both interfaces. A unique method that applies single-pulse nanosecond laser interference lithography is introduced to produce the silver grating, which shows high quality over large area. At oblique incidence, each EOT peak is observed to split into two peaks oppositely shifted towards higher and lower frequencies. At some specific angles of incidence, overlap of these shifted peaks gives rise to distorted transmission spectra. Our method may find applications involving multiple wavelengths such as multi-wavelength bandpass filters, anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectroscopy, enhanced four-wave mixing, and so on.  相似文献

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a sensor of cellular energy status that plays a key role in energetic metabolism regulation. Metabolic changes in immune cells, such as dendritic cell (DC), macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes that participate in the signal directed programs that promote or inhibit immune mediated diseases, including cancer, atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases. Multiple pathogenic mechanisms are involved in the initiation and progression of disease, and many pathways have been uncovered. The mechanistic overlap in the metabolic changes and inflammation could indicate that some of the targets they have are in common, whereas AMPK could be useful in treatment of both disorders. The insight into identification of AMPK responsible for specific immune regulation, anti-inflammatory actions and understanding of the underlying molecular mechanism will promote the generation of novel AMPK activators, and provide novel therapy strategy.  相似文献

The subclass Pteriomorphia is a morphologically diverse and economically important group of Mollusca. We retrieved 42 mitochondrial genomes (mtGenomes) of Pteriomorphia and concatenated protein-coding genes, rRNAs and tRNAs to assess phylogenetic relationships and divergence times among the families with maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses. Both ML and BI analyses strongly support the same topology except for the position of Atrina pectinata. Our study confirms the monophyly of the families Arcidae, Mytilidae, Pteriidae, Ostreidae and Pectinidae. Within Pteriomorphia, we recovered two clusters, one comprising Mytilidae, Arcidae and Pectinidae, the other consisting of Ostreidae, Pteriidae and Pinnidae, but we did not confirm a basal position for any family. The phylogenetic trees suggest that Ostreidae, Pteriidae and Pinnidae should be grouped as the order Ostreoida. Divergence times of major families are estimated as follows: Arcidae, 315.9 Ma; Pectinidae, 384.4 Ma; Ostreidae, 240.8 Ma; Mytilidae, 390.8 Ma. Comparative analysis indicates a low-level codon usage bias (with an average of 50.29) in mtGenomes of Pteriomorphia. In Mytilidae and Ostreidae, the codon usage bias was under mutation pressure rather than selection. Contrastingly, mutation is not the main factor in defining the codon usage in Pectinidae and Pteriidae. Among Ostreidae, Pectinidae and Mytilidae, Ka/Ks ratios range from 0.00 to 1.22 and most values (89.11%) are less than 0.20, indicating that most genes are under strong negative or purifying selection. The protein-coding gene orders show dramatically different patterns in Pteriomorphia. There is no gene block even consisting of two genes that is shared by five families.  相似文献
