Background  

Pelodera (Rhabditis) strongyloides is a small saprophytic nematode that lives in decaying organic matter. On rare occasions, it can invade the mammalian skin, causing a pruritic, erythematous, alopecic and crusting dermatitis on skin sites that come into contact with the ground. Diagnosis of the disease is based on case history (a dog living outdoors on damp straw bedding) with characteristic skin lesions and on the demonstration of typical larvae in skin scrapings or biopsy. Pelodera (rhabditic) dermatitis cases have been reported mainly from Central European countries and the United States.  相似文献

Two myostatin isoforms were identified in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) by RT-PCR, and genomic sequences encoding this negative muscle growth factor were for the first time isolated from a nonmammalian species. Salmon myostatin isoform I is transcribed in white skeletal muscle as a 2346-nucleotide mRNA species that encodes a precursor protein of 373 amino acids. Salmon myostatin I shows 93% sequence identity with isoform II which was isolated from white muscle as a partial cDNA sequence of 1409 nucleotides. In contrast to the restricted gene expression of myostatin in mammals, salmon myostatin I and II mRNAs were identified by RT-PCR in multiple tissues, including white muscle, intestine, brain, gills, tongue and eye. In addition, isoform I mRNA was found in red skeletal muscle, heart, spleen, and ovarian tissue. Using polyclonal antibodies against both isoforms, a 55-kDa precursor protein was detected by Western blot analysis in the red and white skeletal muscle, heart, intestine, and brain. Immunoreactive peptides of 35-40 kDa were identified in the gills, tongue, spleen, and head kidney, while the 25-kDa mature myostatin was found in the eye and serum, and in vitro expressed in rabbit reticulocyte lysate. Salmon myostatin was immunohistochemically localized in the sarcoplasma of red and white muscle fibres, in intestinal epithelial cells, at the basis of the branchial primary lamellae, and in odontoblasts and ameloblasts of the tongue teeth. The results indicate that the role of fish myostatin may not be restricted to muscle growth regulation, but may have additional functions similar to the growth/differentiation factor-11 in mammals.  相似文献

We have used immature commercial swine (13-25 kg) successfully in a variety of experimental cardiopulmonary surgical procedures in our laboratories since 1981. Multiple drug anesthetic protocols using barbiturates, narcotics, paralytic and antiarrhythmic agents have been employed in over 400 procedures per year. Complications, including fatal cardiac arrhythmias, have been greatly reduced by anesthetic protocols and surgical procedures developed through experience.  相似文献

Both the Saturnian and Jovian systems contain satellites with icy surfaces. If life exists on any of these icy bodies (in putative subsurface oceans for example) then the possibility exists for transfer of life from icy body to icy body. This is an application of the idea of Panspermia, wherein life migrates naturally through space. A possible mechanism would be that life,here taken as bacteria, could become frozen in the icy surface ofone body. If a high-speed impact occurred on that surface, ejectacontaining the bacteria could be thrown into space. It could thenmigrate around the local region of space until it arrived at a second icy body in another high-speed impact. In this paper we consider some of the necessary steps for such a process to occur,concentrating on the ejection of ice bearing bacteria in the initial impact, and on what happens when bacteria laden projectiles hit an icy surface. Laboratory experiments using high-speed impacts with a light gas gun show that obtaining icy ejecta with viable bacterial loads is straightforward. In addition to demonstrating the viability of the bacteria carried on the ejecta, we have also measured the angular and size distribution of the ejecta produced in hypervelocity impacts on ice. We have however been unsuccessful at transferring viablebacteria to icy surfaces from bacteria laden projectilesimpacting at hypervelocities.  相似文献

In 2003, a survey at waste management grounds and tire dealerships was conducted to determine the species composition of mosquitoes in tires in southern Manitoba, Canada. Over 25% of the 1,142 tires sampled contained a total of 32,474 mosquito larvae and pupae. Culex restuans made up at least 95% of the larvae collected for each month of the summer. Culiseta inornata and Culex tarsalis reached their greatest numbers in July and August, respectively, though they were never abundant. Ochlerotatus triseriatus was also found but never reached more than 1% of the total larvae collected in any given month. Mosquito prevalence was more than three times greater in August (36.1%) than in June (11.7%). Orientation affected prevalence of mosquitoes in tires: 31.4% of vertical tires (tires standing on their treads) contained mosquitoes, whereas mosquitoes were found in only 18.9% of horizontal tires (tires parallel to the ground). Tires in the eastern region of Manitoba contained mosquitoes more often (61.7%), irrespective of date, than Winnipeg (25.9%), the central region (29.1%), or the western region (19.8%). Mosquito prevalence was similar across three size categories of tires, car tires (18.8%), truck tires (19.8%), and semi-trailer tires (26.7%), though tractor tires (47.8%) contained significantly more mosquitoes than tires in the other categories.  相似文献
