Calcareous nannofossil diversity, and rates of speciation and extinction are calculated for five million year intervals from their first appearance in the Late Triassic through to the Present Day. Important evolutionary events are as follows: first appearance in the Late Triassic, Triassic‐Jurassic boundary extinctions, Tithonian radiation (and the first occurrence of nannofossil carbonates), Late Cretaceous diversity maximum, Cretaceous‐Tertiary boundary extinctions, Palaeocene radiation, mid Eocene to Oligocene diversity decline, and early Miocene diversity rise. These events are related to possible causal factors of which climate appears to be the most fundamental. Other factors may include biogeographical isolation, sea level change, and the configuration of Mesozoic oceans.  相似文献

Whole cell absorption spectra of the Eustigmatophycean algae Nannochloropsis salina Bourrelly and Nannochloropsis sp. reveal the presence of a distinct absorption peak at 490 nm. The lack of chlorophylls b and c in these species indicates that this peak must be attributed to carotenoid absorption. In vivo fluorescence excitation spectra for chlorophyll a emission show a corresponding maximum at 490 nm. This peak is more clearly resolved than carotenoid maxima in other algal classes due to the absence of accessory chlorophylls. The carotenoid composition of the two Nannochloropsis species shows that violaxanthin and vaucheriaxanthin are the main contributors to 490 nm absorption. Violaxanthin accounts for approximately 60% of the total carotenoid in both clones. We conclude that light absorption by violaxanthin, and possibly by vaucheriaxanthin, is coupled in energy transfer to chlorophyll a and that violaxanthin is the major light-harvesting pigment in the Eustigmatophyceae. This is the first report of the photosynthetic light-harvesting function of this carotenoid.  相似文献

The biological oxygen demand (BOD) of filtered water from Lake Wingra, Wisconsin is significantly higher in the littoral zone than in the pelagial zone. Laboratory experiments indicate that BOD is not influenced by water temperature at the time of sampling or by enrichment with nitrate or ammonia. Rather, enrichment with macrophyte leachate sharply increases BOD, and enrichment with phosphate produces a small but significant increase in BOD. We conclude that high BOD in littoral waters of the lake is an indication of production of labile organic matter in the water by dense beds of the macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum.  相似文献

Thrombosis is common in ovarian cancer. However, the interaction of platelets with ovarian cancer cells has not been critically examined. To address this, we investigated platelet interactions in a range of ovarian cancer cell lines with different metastatic potentials [HIO-80, 59M, SK-OV-3, A2780, A2780cis]. Platelets adhered to ovarian cancer cells with the most significant adhesion to the 59M cell line. Ovarian cancer cells induced platelet activation [P-selectin expression] in a dose dependent manner, with the most significant activation seen in response to the 59M cell line. The platelet antagonists [cangrelor, MRS2179, and apyrase] inhibited 59M cell induced activation suggesting a P2Y12 and P2Y1 receptor mediated mechanism of platelet activation dependent on the release of ADP by 59M cells. A2780 and 59M cells potentiated PAR-1, PAR-4, and TxA2 receptor mediated platelet activation, but had no effect on ADP, epinephrine, or collagen induced activation. Analysis of gene expression changes in ovarian cancer cells following treatment with washed platelets or platelet releasate showed a subtle but valid upregulation of anti-apoptotic, anti-autophagy pro-angiogenic, pro-cell cycle and metabolic genes. Thus, ovarian cancer cells with different metastatic potential adhere and activate platelets differentially while both platelets and platelet releasate mediate pro-survival and pro-angiogenic signals in ovarian cancer cells.  相似文献

Summary The ascosporogenous yeast Lipomyces tetrasporus produced an unusual extracellular carbohydrase. It was purified to homogeneity using ammonium sulphate precipitation and DEAE Bio-gel A ion-exchange chromatography. While retaining highest activity on low-molecular-weight saccharides such as maltose and nigerose, it displays considerable activity towards polymeric substrates including soluble starch. It is particularly unusual in that it also hydrolyses dextran and has a very high affinity for this substrate. The enzyme has an exo-lytic mode of action with the only hydrolysis product, glucose, being released in the -anomeric form. Optimum activity occurs at pH 4.5 and at 50°C. It is a glycoprotein, and has an M r value of 150 000 (sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) — 183 000 (fast protein liquid chromatography) and a pI of 6.0. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a decoy receptor for receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand (RANKL), a key inducer of osteoclastogenesis via its receptor RANK. We previously showed that RANK, RANKL, and OPG are able to form a tertiary complex and that OPG must be also considered as a direct effector of osteoclast functions. As OPG contains a heparin-binding domain, the present study investigated the interactions between OPG and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) by surface plasmon resonance and their involvement in the OPG functions. Kinetic data demonstrated that OPG binds to heparin with a high-affinity (KD: 0.28 nM) and that the pre-incubation of OPG with heparin inhibits in a dose-dependent manner the OPG binding to the complex RANK-RANKL. GAGs from different structure/origin (heparan sulfate, dermatan sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate) exert similar activity on OPG binding. The contribution of the sulfation pattern and the size of the oligosaccharide were determined in this inhibitory mechanism. The results demonstrated that sulfation is essential in the OPG-blocking function of GAGs since a totally desulfated heparin loses its capacity to bind and to block OPG binding to RANKL. Moreover, a decasaccharide is the minimal structure that totally inhibits the OPG binding to the complex RANK-RANKL. Western blot analysis performed in 293 cells surexpressing RANKL revealed that the pre-incubation of OPG with these GAGs strongly inhibits the OPG-induced decrease of membrane RANKL half-life. These data support an essential function of the related glycosaminoglycans heparin and heparan sulfate in the activity of the triad RANK-RANKL-OPG.  相似文献

Stable between‐group differences in collective behavior have been documented in a variety of social taxa. Here we evaluate the effects of such variation, often termed collective or colony‐level personality, on coral recovery in a tropical marine farmerfish system. Groups of the farmerfish Stegastes nigricans cultivate and defend gardens of palatable algae on coral reefs in the Indo‐Pacific. These gardens can promote the recruitment, growth, and survival of corals by providing a refuge from coral predation. Here we experimentally evaluate whether the collective response of farmerfish colonies is correlated across intruder feeding guilds – herbivores, corallivores and egg‐eating predators. Further, we evaluate if overall colony responsiveness or situation‐specific responsiveness (i.e. towards herbivores, corallivores, or egg‐eaters in particular) best predicts the growth of outplanted corals. Finally, we experimentally manipulated communities within S. nigricans gardens, adding either macroalgae or large colonies of coral, to assess if farmerfish behavior changes in response to the communities they occupy. Between‐group differences in collective responsiveness were repeatable across intruder guilds. Despite this consistency, responsiveness towards corallivores (porcupinefish and ornate butterflyfish) was a better predictor of outplanted coral growth than responsiveness towards herbivores or egg‐eaters. Adding large corals to farmerfish gardens increased farmerfish attacks towards intruders, pointing to possible positive feedback loops between their aggression towards intruders and the presence of corals whose growth they facilitate. These data provide evidence that among‐group behavioral variation could strongly influence the ecological properties of whole communities.  相似文献

Chronic health effects are increasing in the world such as cancers, hormonal, reproductive, nervous, or immune diseases, even in young people. During regulatory toxicological subchronic tests to prevent these on mammalian health, prior commercialization of chemicals, including pesticides and drugs, or GMOs, some statistically significant findings may be revealed. This discussion is about the need to investigate the relevant criteria to consider those as biologically significant. The sex differences and the non linear dose or time related effects should be considered in contrast to the claims of a Monsanto-supported expert panel about a GMO, the MON 863 Bt maize, but also for pesticides or drugs, in particular to reveal hormone-dependent diseases and first signs of toxicities.  相似文献
