Interspecific aggression by the noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala), a highly despotic species, is homogenizing woodland avifaunas across eastern Australia. Although a native species, the noisy miner's aggressive exclusion of small birds is a Key Threatening Process under national law. Large‐scale removal of noisy miners has been proposed as a management response to this threat following increases in miner presence due to anthropogenic land use practices. We tested this proposal by experimentally removing noisy miners from eucalypt woodland remnants (16–49 ha), assigned randomly as control (n = 12) or treatment (miner removal) sites (n = 12). Standardized bird surveys were conducted before and after removal, and generalized linear mixed models were used to investigate the effect of miner removal on bird assemblage metrics. Despite removing 3552 noisy miners in three sessions of systematic shooting, densities of noisy miners remained similarly high in treatment and control sites, even just 14 days after their removal. However, there was evidence of an increase in richness and abundance of small birds in treatment sites compared to controls—an effect we only expected to see if noisy miner densities were drastically reduced. We suggest that miner removal may have reduced the ability of the recolonizing miners to aggressively exclude small birds, even without substantially reducing miner densities, due to the breakdown of social structures that are central to the species' despotic behaviour. However, this effect on small birds is unlikely to persist in the long term. Synthesis and applications: Despite evidence from other studies that direct removal of noisy miners can result in rapid and sustained conservation benefit for bird communities at small scales, our findings cast doubt on the potential to scale‐up this management approach. The circumstances under which direct control of noisy miners can be achieved remain unresolved.  相似文献

A placebo and a low and a high dose of dexamethasone (Dex) were administered for 4.5 days, at 3-wk intervals, to 24 healthy men, following a double-blind, random-order, crossover procedure. After the last dose the subjects performed a maximal cycling exercise, during which respiratory exchanges, electrocardiogram, and blood pressures were monitored. Blood was sampled just before and after each exercise bout. Dex showed no significant effect on fitness, sleep, exhaustion during exercise, maximal O(2) consumption, ventilatory threshold, maximal blood lactate, or rest and exercise blood pressures. On the contrary, both doses of Dex significantly decreased heart rate at rest and during maximal exercise. Blood glucose at rest was higher after both doses of Dex than after placebo; the opposite was found during exercise. Blood levels of ACTH, beta-endorphin, cortisol, and cortisol-binding globulin were lowered by Dex at rest and after exercise. Dex stimulated the increase in atrial natriuretic factor during exercise and lowered rest and postexercise aldosterone. Finally, no difference between "fit or trained" and "less fit or untrained" subjects could be found with respect to Dex effects.  相似文献

Stochastic phenotype switching - or bet hedging - is a pervasive feature of living systems and common in bacteria that experience fluctuating (unpredictable) environmental conditions. Under such conditions, the capacity to generate variable offspring spreads the risk of being maladapted in the present environment, against offspring likely to have some chance of survival in the future. While a rich subject for theoretical studies, little is known about the selective causes responsible for the evolutionary emergence of stochastic phenotype switching. Here we review recent work - both theoretical and experimental - that sheds light on ecological factors that favour switching types over non-switching types. Of particular relevance is an experiment that provided evidence for an adaptive origin of stochastic phenotype switching by subjecting bacterial populations to a selective regime that mimicked essential features of the host immune response. Central to the emergence of switching types was frequent imposition of 'exclusion rules' and 'population bottlenecks' - two complementary faces of frequency dependent selection. While features of the immune response, exclusion rules and bottlenecks are likely to operate in many natural environments. Together these factors define a set of selective conditions relevant to the evolution of stochastic switching, including antigenic variation and bacterial persistence.  相似文献

Acute lung injury results in damage to the alveolar epithelium, leading to leak of proteins into the alveolar space and impaired gas exchange. Lung function can be restored only if the epithelial layer is restored. The process of reepithelialization requires migration of lung epithelial cells to cover denuded basement membranes. The factors that control the migration of lung epithelial cells are incompletely understood. We examined isolated murine type II alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) for expression of CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) and functional consequences of the binding of the main CCR2 ligand monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1). We found that primary AECs bound MCP-1 and expressed CCR2 mRNA. These cells demonstrated functional consequences of CCR2 expression with migration in response to MCP-1 in chemotaxis/haptotaxis assays. Primary AECs cultured from mice lacking CCR2 did not respond to MCP-1. Monolayers of AECs lacking CCR2 demonstrated delayed closure of mechanical wounds compared with AEC monolayers expressing CCR2. Delayed closure of mechanical wounds of wild-type AECs was also demonstrated in the presence of anti-MCP-1 antibody. These data demonstrate for the first time that AECs express CCR2 and are capable of using this receptor for chemotaxis and healing of wounds. CCR2-MCP-1 interactions may be important in the process of reepithelialization after lung injury.  相似文献

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene was mineralized in two stages by soil, estuarine water, and sediment microbial populations. At high concentrations, phenanthrene was degraded, with the concomitant production of biomass and accumulation of Folin-Ciocalteau-reactive aromatic intermediates. Subsequent consumption of these intermediates resulted in a secondary increase in biomass. Analysis of intermediates by high-performance liquid chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and UV absorption spectrometry showed 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (1H2NA) to be the predominant product. A less pronounced two-stage mineralization pattern was also observed by monitoring 14CO2 production from low concentrations (0.5 mg liter−1) of radiolabeled phenanthrene. Here, mineralization of 14C-labeled 1H2NA could explain the incremental 14CO2 produced during the later part of the incubations. Accumulation of 1H2NA by isolates obtained from enrichments was dependent on the initial phenanthrene concentration. The production of metabolites during polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation is discussed with regard to its possible adaptive significance and its methodological implications.  相似文献

Liposuction typically has a low incidence of complications and is associated with significant cosmetic benefit. In this case, the patient developed a dermatomal rash with vesicles on an erythematous base consistent with herpes zoster 8 days after liposuction to the back and flanks. To the authors' knowledge, herpes zoster has not been previously reported as a complication of liposuction. Although the precise relationship of herpes zoster infection to the liposuction procedure is difficult to determine, mechanical irritation most likely reactivated the varicella zoster virus in the involved dermatomal distribution. The patient was treated with antiviral and analgesic medications and healed without any further complications.  相似文献

The internalization of a series of water-soluble CdSe/CdS quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by citrate, isocitrate, succinate, and malate by Escherichia coli is established by epifluorescence and confocal fluorescence scanning microscopy, fluorimetry, and UV–vis spectroscopy on whole and lysed bacterial cells. The organic-acid-stabilized QDs span a range in size from 3.8±1.1 to 6.0±2.4 nm with emission wavelengths from 540 to 630 nm. QDs of different sizes (i.e., 3.8–6 nm) can enter the bacterium and be detected on different fluorescence channels with little interference from other QDs as a result of the distinct emission profiles (i.e., 540–630 nm, respectively). Costaining QD-labeled E. coli with 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI) demonstrates that the QDs and DAPI are colocalized within E. coli, whereas costaining QD-labeled E. coli with membrane dye FM4-64 shows that the FM4-64 is localized in the outer bacterial membrane and that the QDs are inside.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available to authorized users in the online version of this article at .  相似文献

This study examined the ability of nine human defensins (HD) to protect against herpes simplex virus infection. Noncytotoxic concentrations of all six alpha-defensins (HNP1-4, HD5, and HD6) and human beta-defensin (hBD) 3 inhibited HSV infection. Two other beta-defensins, hBD1 and 2, lacked this protective activity. Synchronized assays revealed that HNP-4, HD6, and hBD3 acted primarily by preventing binding and entry, whereas HNP1-3 and HD5 also inhibited postentry events. Even when added several hours after entry, substantial reduction in viral gene expression ensued. Human cervical epithelial cells incubated with HNP-1 or HD5 accumulated the peptides intracellularly. Surface plasmon resonance studies revealed that HNPs 1, 2, 3, and HD5 bound HSV glycoprotein B (gB) with high affinity, but showed minimal binding to heparan sulfate, the receptor for attachment. In contrast, HNP-4 and HD6 bound heparan sulfate, but not gB. HBD3 bound both gB and heparan sulfate, but hBD1 and hBD2 bound neither. Admixture of HD5 with hydroxyethylcellulose significantly protected mice from a viral challenge lethal to controls receiving an inactive peptide or hydroxyethylcellulose alone. These findings demonstrate that HDs act at multiple steps in the HSV life cycle and support the development of defensins or defensin-like peptides as microbicides.  相似文献
