Total pollen production per inflorescence was studied in the most important species of the Poaceae family in the city of Córdoba in order to further our knowledge of the partial contribution of each species of this family to the total amount of pollen released into the atmosphere. The contribution of grasses in a given area was estimated by counting the number of inflorescences in an area of one square meter. Four different representative areas of the city were selected. The number of pollen grains per anther and flowers per inflorescence was also estimated in order to obtain total pollen production per inflorescence. Pollen production per inflorescence ranged from 14,500 to more than 22,000,000 pollen grains, the amount being clearly higher in the perennial species. Pollen production per square meter was higher in the mountains near the city and lower in areas of abandoned crops. Only a few species are responsible for the majority of pollen produced. A phenological study is necessary in order to determine the temporal distribution of this pollen production and subsequent shedding. 相似文献

Potential pollen production, viability and germination were studied in the most important species of Quercus in the mountains of Córdoba to determine the contribution of each species to the total amount of airborne pollen. The results were compared over two consecutive years with different rainfall patterns. The viability of pollen grains was determined at anther opening, and during the pollination period, in order to determine potential pollination capacity. Results indicated that there were differences in the number of pollen grains produced by stamen in the four species. Equally, there were differences in the number of flowers among the species, being Q. suber the species with higher number of catkins groups and flowers per individual tree. Total pollen production per tree can be summarized in the following proportion: 1: 3: 3: 6 (Q. coccifera, Q. ilex ssp. ballota, Q. faginea and Q. suber). Potential pollen viability was estimated using the Fluorochromatic Reaction (FCR) and a germination assay. The results have shown that Quercus potential pollen viability is high and declines slowly with time. Aves are represented by abundant fossil remains in Quaternary sites. Birds are well adapted to the environment they inhabit, so they make very good paleoenvironmental indicators for Quaternary sites. Here we analyse the avian remains from the Late Pleistocene (probably MIS3) site of Aguilón P-7 (AGP-7). The Pleistocene sediments fill up a shallow cave, which is located in the Zaragozan part of the Iberian Range, 55 km south of the city of Zaragoza. We have for the first time provided a taxonomic and taphonomic study of the avian assemblage of AGP-7, as well as a preliminary paleoenvironmental analysis based on these data. Nine avian taxa have been identified: Galliformes indet., Lagopus sp., Aquila chrysaetos, Gyps fulvus, Passeridae indet., Anthus sp., Prunella modularis,Sturnus cf. unicolor and Corvus monedula. The taphonomic analysis did not provide conclusive information. However, it suggests an accumulation of uneaten food remains by diurnal birds of prey. The identified taxa currently inhabit the Iberian Peninsula, populating woodland environments with rocky areas. They are found in areas with an oceanic climate, in contrast to the Mediterranean climate that now prevails in Aguilón. 相似文献

The dengue virus affects millions of people every year worldwide, causing large epidemic outbreaks that disrupt people’s lives and severely strain healthcare systems. In the absence of a reliable vaccine against dengue or an effective treatment to manage the illness in humans, most efforts to combat dengue infections have focused on preventing its vectors, mainly the Aedes aegypti mosquito, from flourishing across the world. These mosquito-control strategies need reliable disease activity surveillance systems to be deployed. Despite significant efforts to estimate dengue incidence using a variety of data sources and methods, little work has been done to understand the relative contribution of the different data sources to improved prediction. Additionally, scholarship on the topic had initially focused on prediction systems at the national- and state-levels, and much remains to be done at the finer spatial resolutions at which health policy interventions often occur. We develop a methodological framework to assess and compare dengue incidence estimates at the city level, and evaluate the performance of a collection of models on 20 different cities in Brazil. The data sources we use towards this end are weekly incidence counts from prior years (seasonal autoregressive terms), weekly-aggregated weather variables, and real-time internet search data. We find that both random forest-based models and LASSO regression-based models effectively leverage these multiple data sources to produce accurate predictions, and that while the performance between them is comparable on average, the former method produces fewer extreme outliers, and can thus be considered more robust. For real-time predictions that assume long delays (6–8 weeks) in the availability of epidemiological data, we find that real-time internet search data are the strongest predictors of dengue incidence, whereas for predictions that assume short delays (1–3 weeks), in which the error rate is halved (as measured by relative RMSE), short-term and seasonal autocorrelation are the dominant predictors. Despite the difficulties inherent to city-level prediction, our framework achieves meaningful and actionable estimates across cities with different demographic, geographic and epidemic characteristics. 相似文献

We investigated whether ghosts behaved similarly to intact erythrocytes to maintain regular primary hemostasis under flow conditions. To this end we performed perfusion experiments with whole blood in which erythrocytes were replaced by pink ghosts, and platelet interaction with the subendothelial surface of a damaged vessel was morphometrically evaluated. The same objective was sought by means of studies with a platelet function analyzer (PFA-100(TM) instrument). Perfusions performed with control blood reconstituted with intact erythrocytes gave rise to 0.4+/-0.2% contact but not spread platelets, 10.8+/-3.4% adhering and spread platelets, 16.3+/-4.6% platelets in thrombi, with 27.5+/-7.4% of the surface covered. Even though the average diameter of the ghosts was smaller than that of intact erythrocytes (5.3 microm vs. 7.7 microm), the values obtained in perfusions performed with ghosts were similar to those of the erythrocyte controls. Studies performed with the PFA-100(TM) analyzer were consistent with those observed in perfusion studies. The viscosity of control blood was compared with that of blood reconstituted with ghosts. At shear rates lower than 450 s(-1), the viscosity of the ghost samples was higher than that of the controls, but the difference progressively decreased as shear rate increased up to 750 s(-1) (3.61+/-0.15 and 3.71+/-0.17 cP, respectively). In conclusion, the results of our study showed that ghosts behaved similarly to intact erythrocytes in maintaining a normal platelet interaction with digested subendothelium, under conditions of moderate shear rate and constant hematocrit (40%). The rheological activity of ghosts, bodies that are metabolically less active, was sufficient for them to satisfactorily act as substitutes for intact erythrocytes in our system. 相似文献

The bifunctional bacterial enzyme N-acetyl-glucosamine-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GlmU) catalyzes the two-step formation of UDP-GlcNAc, a fundamental precursor in bacterial cell wall biosynthesis. With the emergence of new resistance mechanisms against beta-lactam and glycopeptide antibiotics, the biosynthetic pathway of UDP-GlcNAc represents an attractive target for drug design of new antibacterial agents. The crystal structures of Streptococcus pneumoniae GlmU in unbound form, in complex with acetyl-coenzyme A (AcCoA) and in complex with both AcCoA and the end product UDP-GlcNAc, have been determined and refined to 2.3, 2.5, and 1.75 A, respectively. The S. pneumoniae GlmU molecule is organized in two separate domains connected via a long alpha-helical linker and associates as a trimer, with the 50-A-long left-handed beta-helix (LbetaH) C-terminal domains packed against each other in a parallel fashion and the C-terminal region extended far away from the LbetaH core and exchanged with the beta-helix from a neighboring subunit in the trimer. AcCoA binding induces the formation of a long and narrow tunnel, enclosed between two adjacent LbetaH domains and the interchanged C-terminal region of the third subunit, giving rise to an original active site architecture at the junction of three subunits. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous inflammation of the breast is an inflammatory process with multiple etiologies. It can accompany breast carcinoma or be idiopathic. It often presents clinically in a fashion mimicking carcinoma. Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is strongly associated with lactation and is reported to occur in postpartum patients. This is the second fine needle aspiration (FNA) report of idiopathic granulomatous inflammation in the breast of a pregnant woman. CASE: A 27-year-old, 7-month-pregnant woman presented with a hard nodule in her right breast; on ultrasound examination it showed mixed echogenicity, suspicious for carcinoma. FNA showed granulomatous inflammation. The smears were highly cellular, with many clusters of and single epithelioid cells displaying moderate pleomorphism and prominent nucleoli in a background composed of neutrophils, plasma cells, lymphocytes and multinucleated cells. Core needle biopsy revealed a nonnecrotizing, granulomatous lesion. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of granulomatous inflammation can be challenging, and the cytologic features can be difficult to separate from those of carcinoma. The relatively rare occurrence of this lesion and its cytologic features make it a potentially difficult diagnosis and diagnostic pitfall. 相似文献
