BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The light availability on a temperate, deciduous-forest floor varies greatly, reflecting the seasonal leaf dynamics of the canopy trees. The growth and/or reproductive activity of understorey plants should be influenced by the length of the high-irradiance period from snowmelt to canopy closure. The aim of the present study was to clarify how spring-blooming species regulate the translocation of photosynthetic products to current reproduction and storage organs during a growing season in accordance with the changing light conditions. METHODS: Growth pattern, net photosynthetic rate, seed production, and shoot and flower production in the next year of Trillium apetalon were compared between natural and experimentally shaded conditions. Furthermore, translocation of current photosynthetic products within plants was assessed by a labelled carbon-chase experiment. KEY RESULTS: During the high-irradiance period, plants showed high photosynthetic ability, in which current products were initially used for shoot growth, then reserved in the rhizome. Carbon translocation to developing fruit occurred after canopy closure, but this was very small due to low photosynthetic rates under the darker conditions. The shading treatment in the early season advanced the time of carbon translocation to fruit, but reduced seed production in the current year and flower production of the next year. CONCLUSIONS: Carbon translocation to the storage organ had priority over seed production under high-irradiance conditions. A shortened bright period due to early canopy closure effectively restricts carbon assimilation, which greatly reduces subsequent reproductive output owing to low photosynthetic products for fruit development and small carbon storage for future reproduction. As populations of this species are maintained by seedling recruitment, acceleration of canopy closure timing may influence the maintenance and dynamics of populations. 相似文献

We investigated whether the ingestion of the Japanese persimmon (kaki, Diospyros kaki) could lower the human peripheral body temperature. It was found that the temperatures recorded at the foot and wrist were depressed after kaki consumption compared to after the same amount of water consumption. The effects of ingesting freeze-dried kaki and eating a cookie (as its nutritional counterpart) containing the same amount of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and water were compared. A similar temperature-reducing effect of kaki was observed. The recovery of finger temperature after soaking the finger in ice-cooled water was also studied. The temperature recovery was delayed after kaki consumption. It was thus quantitatively demonstrated that ingesting kaki indeed had the effect of lowering (or repressing the rise) of the peripheral human body temperature, as has been traditionally believed in China for many hundreds of years. 相似文献

The correlation between the glutamate-glutamine cycle and nitric oxide (NO) production in the central nervous system (CNS) of a new type of influenza-associated encephalopathy in children is discussed. When measurements of several amino acids and NOx (nitrite/nitrate) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using HPLC-fluorescence and -UV methods, respectively, were made. the CSF glutamate levels of patients with the new type of encephalitis were significantly lower, and both glutamine and NOx levels were significantly higher than those of the control group and the patients of the meningitis group. Results indicate that the turnover rate of glutamate in CNS, particularly in the brain, increases in the influenza-associated encephalopathy. The high mortality in the disease may correlate with the hyperactivity of supra-spinal glutamate neurons and the subsequent high activity levels of NOx in CNS. 相似文献

Expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma in the human urinary tract through embryonic development suggests its possible roles in the development, proliferation, and differentiation of uroepithelium. Little is known, however, about physiological roles of PPARgamma in the urinary tract. We investigated effects of PPARgamma ligands on the proliferation of normal human urothelial cells and stromal cells cultivated from surgical specimens. Active proliferation in vitro as well as high molecular weight cytokeratin expression indicated that cultured urothelial cells possess basal cell phenotype. PPARgamma protein, expressed predominantly in the epithelial layer of the normal human urinary tract in vivo, was abundantly expressed in urothelial cells but barely detectable in stromal cells in vitro. Natural ligand for PPARgamma, 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14) prostaglandin J(2) (15d-PGJ(2)), as well as synthetic ones, troglitazone and pioglitazone, suppressed proliferation of the urothelial cells dose-dependently. These effects were PPARgamma specific because clofibrate or PGF(2alpha) did not affect proliferation of urothelial cells. Neither 9-cis retinoic acid or all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) at 1 microM showed any synergism on the antiproliferative effects of PPARgamma ligands. Urothelial cells treated with PPARgamma ligands showed drastic morphologic changes and cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase accompanied with increased mRNA level of a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1). Since 15d-PGJ(2) is present in vivo during the resolution phase of inflammation, these results indicated that PPARgamma might be involved in the terminal phase of urothelial re-epithelialization processes. 相似文献

An incident reporting system (IRS) prevents possible adverse events by collecting and analyzing incidents that occur. However, few studies are available regarding IRSs in the laboratory animal field. This study aimed to develop an incident severity classification for laboratory animals (ISCLA) to evaluate the usefulness of the IRS in laboratory animal facilities. Twenty-three incidents reported from March 2019 to February 2020 on our IRS were retrospectively reviewed. Three of the 23 incidents failed to obtain some experimental data. Two of these incidents were harmless to animals, but the other caused the animals moderate distress. In addition, two of the three incidents made animals unsuitable for experiments. Since the inconsistent impact of incidents on animals and experiments prevented the comparison of the severity of individual incidents, we developed the ISCLA. According to the ISCLA, the above three incidents were classified into Category 3b and 4a. The others were classified into Category 0 (n=5), 1 (n=6), 2 (n=3), and 3a (n=6) in ascending order of severity. No incident was classified into Category 4b and 5. Furthermore, incidents occurring in the animal housing area were more severe than those occurring in the supporting area (P=0.002). This study showed that incident occurrences had characteristics that were not visible from individual incidents alone. Moreover, the ISCLA was considered useful when conducting the IRS and taking improvement measures in laboratory animal facilities. 相似文献

Ecological divergence in a species provides a valuable opportunity to study the early stages of speciation. We focused on Metrosideros polymorpha, a unique example of the incipient radiation of woody species, to examine how an ecological divergence continues in the face of gene flow. We analyzed the whole genomes of 70 plants collected throughout the island of Hawaii, which is the youngest island with the highest altitude in the archipelago and encompasses a wide range of environments. The continuous M. polymorpha forest stands on the island of Hawaii were differentiated into three genetic clusters, each of which grows in a distinctive environment and includes substantial genetic and phenotypic diversity. The three genetic clusters showed signatures of selection in genomic regions encompassing genes relevant to environmental adaptations, including genes associated with light utilization, oxidative stress, and leaf senescence, which are likely associated with the ecological differentiation of the species. Our demographic modeling suggested that the glaberrima cluster in wet environments maintained a relatively large population size and two clusters split: polymorpha in the subalpine zone and incana in dry and hot conditions. This ecological divergence possibly began before the species colonized the island of Hawaii. Interestingly, the three clusters recovered genetic connectivity coincidentally with a recent population bottleneck, in line with the weak reproductive isolation observed in the species. This study highlights that the degree of genetic differentiation between ecologically-diverged populations can vary depending on the strength of natural selection in the very early phases of speciation. 相似文献

Local-regional species richness relationships have been used to infer relative contributions of local and regional forces
to determining the richness of local communities. Although most previous research assumed competition as major local species
interactions, growing empirical evidence suggests that facilitation is also an important driver of local community dynamics.
Here, I explore how facilitation affects the shape of local-regional richness relationships, by incorporating local facilitation
into a patch-occupancy model of metacommunity dynamics. I find that facilitation can generate local-regional richness relationships
with the alternative stable states of mean local richness at intermediate to high levels of regional richness. These alternative
stable states tend to occur in a metacommunity in moderately harsh environments. This result cautions against assuming that
only competition can be primarily important local interactions when interpreting the shapes of local-regional richness relationships.
Moreover, the possibility of alternative stable states suggests that gradual decline of regional species diversity might cause
a sudden collapse of metacommunities with local facilitation. 相似文献

Streptomycin-phosphorylating enzyme was reported previously to be produced in mycelium of Streptomyces griseus HUT 6037 at late stage of growth. In the present investigation, this enzyme was purified 200 times as high in specific activity as cell-free extract by means of salting out, chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-25 and gel filtration with Sephadex G-100. This enzyme was most stable at pH 8.0 and required 10?2mMg2+ in the reaction mixture for the highest activity. It lost the activity by heat treatment at 40°C for 15 min in absence of the substrate.Mutant cultures were prepared on productivity of or tolerance to streptomycin, and their capacity to produce streptomycin-phosphorylating enzyme was examined. The cultures which had low to no capacity to produce streptomycin produced a small amount to none of the enzyme, suggesting that production of the streptomycin-phosphorylating enzyme had some correlation with streptomycin productivity of the culture. But no definite correlation was observed between productivity of the enzyme and the capacity to tolerate streptomycin. 相似文献

1.Animals exploiting renewable resource patches are faced with complex multi-location routing problems. In many species, individuals visit foraging patches in predictable sequences called traplines. However, whether and how they optimize their routes remains poorly understood.2.In this study, we demonstrate that traplining bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) make a trade-off between minimizing travel distance and prioritizing the most rewarding feeding locations.3.Individual bees trained to forage on five artificial flowers of equal reward value selected the shortest possible route as a trapline. After introducing a single highly rewarding flower to the array, they re-adjusted their routes visiting the most rewarding flower first provided the departure distance from the shortest possible route remained small (18%). When routes optimizing the initial rate of reward intake were much longer (42%), bees prioritized short travel distances.4.Under natural conditions, in which individual flowers vary in nectar productivity and replenish continuously, it might pay bees to prioritize highly rewarding locations, both to minimize the overall number of flowers to visit and to beat competitors.5.We discuss how combined memories of location and quality of resource patches could allow bees and other traplining animals to optimize their routing decisions in heterogeneous environments. 相似文献
