Attraction was found to be a reliable indicator of species recognition in the damselfish Dascyllus aruanus. Isolated fish are attracted to live or dead conspecifics significantly more than to heterospecifics. Attraction persists towards black and white photographs. Using photographs it was shown that certain parts of the pattern are more important for recognition than others. Of the three black bars of the normal colour pattern, the central is the most important, and the anterior the least so. Two alternative criteria for demonstrating species recognition in a boldly coloured reef fish, aggression and attraction, are contrasted.  相似文献

A (G + C)-rich satellite DNA component (p = 1.716 g/ml) has been fractionated from the total DNA of the Iranian subspecies of the Asiatic wild ass, Equus hemionus onager, by successive dactinomycin-CsCl and netropsin sulfate-CsCl isopycnic gradients. Complementary 3H-RNA (cRNA) transcribed from the satellite DNA hybridized predominantly to the centromeric and telomeric constitutive heterochromatic regions of onager chromosomes. These studies have suggested that satellite DNA's with similar sequences are present in the centromeric, as well as telomeric, heterochromatic regions of some onager chromosomes. The centromeric region of the fusion metacentric t(23;24) of the onager is deficient in sequences homologous to the onager 1.716 g/ml satellite DNA, indicating a loss of satellite DNA during fusion or an amplification of the satellite DNA in the centromeric regions of the acrocentric chromosomes 23 and 24 subsequent to fission. Sequences complementary to onager 1.716 g/ml satellite DNA show extensive hybridization to the constitutive heterochromatin of the feral donkey (E. asinus) karyotype, consistent with a view of conservation and amplification of similar or identical sequences in the two species.  相似文献

We report herein a simple and effective way to photochemically immobilize biomolecules onto a fibre-optic silica surface. The system is based on a photoreactive benzophenone derivative that is bound to SiO2 surfaces of the optical fibre via a silane anchor. The benzophenone derivative was 4-allyloxybenzophenone, synthesized by standard procedures that were later used to synthesize the 4-(3'-chlorodimethylsilyl) propyloxybenzophenone and 4-(3'-dichloromethylsilyl) propyloxybenzophenone by regular hydrosilation procedures. After silanization with the benzophenone derivatives, the fibres were immersed in a cholera toxin B subunit solution and illuminated with UV light (wavelength > 345 nm). As a result of the photochemical reaction, a thin layer of the antigen was covalently bound to the benzophenone-modified surface. The photochemically modified fibre-optics were then tested as immunosensors in the detection of cholera anti-toxin antibody and revealed through chemiluminescence measurements. A secondary antibody labelled with horseradish peroxidase acted as the marker for the cholera toxin antibody. A photo-electronic set-up was designed specifically to monitor the signal. The immunosensor system was shown to be both specific and sensitive. The lowest rabbit serum titre detected was 1:1 700,000.  相似文献

Sera from 140 lepromatous leprosy patients (test group) and 120 normal persons, who showed no clinical signs of acute or chronic toxoplasmosis (control group), were studied for the presence of Toxoplasma gondii antibody by indirect hemagglutination and indirect-immunofluorescent antibody tests. Both tests showed a high incidence of Toxoplasma antibody in the test group in comparison with the control group. IgM and IgG classes of antibody responses were observed in both the groups, which signified recent as well as past infections in them.  相似文献

The distribution of silver-stained nucleolus-organizing regions (NORs) in fibroblast chromosomes from all seven extant species of Equidae are described. There are variations in the number and locations of silver-stained NORs in different species but most of the cells in an individual of any speies had only 2 to 4 silver-stained NORs. In Equus przewalskii and E. caballus NORs were detected on up to three different chromosomes. In E. asinus 11 different chromosomes were observed to possess NOR sites. E. hemionus kulan and E. hemionus onager had NORs on 2 large metacentric pairs and a small acrocentric pair. In E. grevyi and E. burchelli NORs were located on 3 to 4 different pairs. E. zebra hartmannae had silver-staining over the telomere regions of the short arms of the chromosomes 1, 3 and 4. A comparison of G-banded chromosomes and silver-stained NORs has revealed one autosome with conserved G-band patterns and possessing a silver-staining NOR in all the species except E. asinus. Variations in the number and multichromosomal locations of NORs in various species could have evolved by pairing and exchanges between non-homologous chromosomal heterochromatin having similar satellite DNA sequences.  相似文献

Allopreening interactions were observed in groups of captive, hand-reared Jackdaws Corvus monedula. Head fluff and Bowing, both resembling 'soliciting' postures described in the literature, are described. Head fluff seems to be associated with allopreening. Bowing was performed more frequently by socially top-ranking birds, performed and received equally frequently by females and by males, and directed at birds higher than and lower than the performer with equal frequency. Bowing was followed mostly by the recipient's moving away or by no apparent response, and only rarely by the allopreening of the actor. Allopreening was performed mostly by socially low-ranking towards high-ranking birds, and both when the actor was dominant to or submissive to the recipient. Bowing and allopreening seemed to be associated with situations of tension. It is suggested that Bowing here was used as intimidation rather than 'solicitation' or appeasement, and that allopreening and Bowing function in confirming relationships and in conveying information about relative status to other members of the group.  相似文献

The main driving force behind water transport in plants is the air's low water potential. In the presence of high humidity, the transpiration process is halted and water transport is mainly sustained by the root pressure. The surplus of water following the removal of essential components (e.g. salts) is excreted by the plant via guttation through the hydathodes. When guttation occurs, the plant surface is wetted. These are the conditions that will allow epiphytic living, motile bacteria to move and to eventually enter the plant's interior via the hydathodes. The question arose as to whether the plant has developed a protection mechanism against motile bacteria in the vicinity of the hydathodes. Such a protection mechanism could use the well known pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins. Indeed, an analysis of the guttation fluid using one- and two-dimensional electrophoresis showed a clustering of approximately 200 proteins, primarily with isoelectric points in the acidic pH. Proteins identified using electrospray ionization mass spectroscopic analysis and western blot analysis belong mostly to the family of PR-proteins suggesting a role in plant protection against invaders. The protein profile of the guttation fluid was remarkably modified by treating plants with methyl jasmonic acid suggesting that the protein composition of the guttation fluid is controlled by internal and/or external stimuli.  相似文献
