Protein synthesis in yeast mitochondria shows biphasic Arrhenius plots both in vivo and in vitro, with a twofold increase in the activation energy below the transition temperature suggesting a functional association between mitochondrial protein synthesis and the inner membrane. Analysis by gel electrophoresis of mitochondrial translation products labeled in vivo showed that the same proteins are synthesized and then inserted into the membrane above and below the transition temperature of the membrane. The rate of leucine uptake into mitochondria was decreased at least fivefold in the presence of chloramphenicol, suggesting that leucine is used mainly for protein synthesis. In the absence of chloramphenicol, the rate of leucine uptake was always slightly higher but comparable to the incorporation rate of leucine into protein at all temperatures studied, suggesting that the transport of leucine into mitochondria is not rate-limiting for protein synthesis. The ionophore valinomycin or the uncoupler carbonyl phenylhydrazone (CCCP) inhibited 75-80% of the leucine uptake in the presence of chloramphenicol. In addition, the omission of respiratory chain substrates and the ATP-regenerating system led to a 93% inhibition of uptake, suggesting that leucine uptake may occur by an active transport mechanism. 相似文献

D.A. VEAL, J.E. TRIMBLE AND A.J. BEATTIE. 1992. Myrmecia gulose (Australian bull ant) produce secretions from their metapleural exocrine glands which have broad spectrum antimicrobial properties. Such secretions are probably of importance in disease control in bull ant communities. These antimicrobial secretions are stable at 100°C, resistant to proteolytic enzymes and are active over a wide pH range. Of the organisms tested only endospores of Bacillus cereus were found to be resistant. The antimicrobial agent(s) are absorbed by cells and result in cell lysis. The secretions do not interfere with any growth-related processes. These observations demonstrate that insects may be a source of novel antimicrobial agent(s). 相似文献

The biology of cross‐talk between activated growth factor receptors and cell‐surface integrins is an area which has attracted much interest in recent years (Schwartz and Ginsberg, 2002 ). This review discusses the relationship between the insulin‐like growth factor (IGF) axis and cell‐surface integrin receptors in the regulation of various aspects of cell physiology. Key to these interactions are signals transmitted between integrins and the IGF‐I receptor (IGF‐IR) when either or both are bound to their cognate ligands and we will review the current state of knowledge in this area. The IGF axis comprises many molecular components and we will also discuss the potential role of these species in cross‐talk with the integrin receptor. With respect to integrin ligands, we will mainly focus on the well‐characterized interactions of the two extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoproteins fibronectin (FN) and vitronectin (VN) with cell‐surface ligands, and, how this affects activity through the IGF axis. Lentigo maligna, a precancerous lesion, is a brown-black irregularly pigmented freckle, usually occurring on the face of the elderly subject. In a series of 99 patients with malignant melanomas, lentigo maligna was the pre-existing lesion in 21. The clinical and histological findings, and previous publications on the subject are reviewed. Lentigo maligna itself is not a superficial malignant melanoma. After the development of malignant melanoma from lentigo maligna, eight of 21 patients developed metastatic disease. This seems to indicate that once malignant melanoma has developed (whether de novo from the junctional portion of a pre-existing nevus, or from a lentigo maligna), the outlook is the same. During the development of malignant melanoma from lentigo maligna there is an indefinite period when it is virtually impossible to determine histologically whether malignant melanoma is present. Naturally, the inclusion of these indefinite cases will greatly influence reported results of treatment. 相似文献

Refined petroleum products have been used since last century for the control of phytophagous arthropod pests. The response
ofHelicoverpa spp. and its natural enemies to petroleum oil sprays on cotton was investigated under laboratory choice/no-choice and small
plot field conditions at the Australian Cotton Research Institute at Narrabri in New South Wales. In oviposition choice and
no-choice tests, petroleum oil sprays suppressed oviposition inHelicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) but notH. armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).H. punctigera females laid about seven times as many eggs on the control (water sprayed) cotton plants as on either petroleum oil spray
alone or oil mixed with Kelgum. HoweverH. armigera females laid the same number of eggs on both treated and control plants. In field trials, the number of eggs per metre per
sample date found on the plots treated with petroleum oil spray was 3.83 compared with 6.29 and 7.82 eggs respectively on
plots treated with conventional insecticide sprays and the unsprayed plots. The number of larvae found on plots treated with
petroleum oil sprays was 2.9 times higher than the conventional insecticide sprayed plot, however, this was 1.6 times fewer
than the unsprayed plot. The cotton yields from plots treated with petroleum oil sprays was 3.70 bales/ha compared with 7.32
and 2.69 bales respectively from the conventional insecticide treated and the unsprayed plots. Petroleum oil sprays had little
or no effect on predatory beetles, bugs, lacewings and spiders.
Résumé Des produits de pétrole raffiné ont été utilisés depuis le siècle dernier pour lutter contre les arthropodes ravageurs phytophages. La réponse deHelicoverpa spp. et des ses ennemis naturels à des pulvérisations d'huile de pétrole sur cotonnier a été étudiée en laboratoire dans des expériences de choix et d'absence de choix ainsi que dans de petites parcelles en plein champ à l'Institut de Recherche australien sur le coton (Narrabri, Nouvelles Galles du Sud). Dans des expériences de choix/non choix concernant l'oviposition, les pulvérisations d'huile de pétrole empêchaient la ponte d'Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) mais pas deH. armigera (Hubner) (Lep.: Noctuidae). Les femelles deH. punctigera pondent environ 7 fois plus d'oeufs sur les plants de coton témoins (pulvérisés avec de l'eau) que sur les plants traités à l'huile de pétrole seule ou en mélange avec du Kelgum. Par contre,H. armigera pond le même nombre d'oeufs sur les plants traités ou témoins. Dans les essais en plein champ, les parcelles pulvérisées avec de l'huile de pétrole comportent significativement moins deHelicoverpa et présentent une récolte plus importante que celles non traitées; cependant le nombre de chenilles est plus élevé et la récolte moindre que dans les parcelles traitées avec des insecticides. Abstract Studies of citrus leafminer in a coastal orchard in NSW, Australia indicated that an increase in abundance to about one mine per flush was followed during the midseason flush by a rapid increase in population that was related to an increase in the percentage of leaves infested within flushes and the number of mines per leaf. The fits of frequency distributions and Iwao's patchiness regression indicated that populations were highly contagious initially, and as the exponent k of the negative binomial distribution increased with increasing population density, the distribution approached random. Concurrently, the coefficient of variation of mines per flush (which was strongly related to the proportion of un-infested flushes) decreased to about unity as the proportion of un-infested flushes reached zero and fell further as the number of mines per flush increased. Both numerative and binomial sequential sampling plans were developed using a decision threshold based on 1.2 mines per flush. The binomial sampling plan was based on a closely fitting model of the functional relationship between mean density and proportion of infested flushes. Functional relationships using the parameters determined from Iwao's patchiness regression and Taylor's power law were equally satisfactory, and one based on the negative binomial model also fitted well, but the Poisson model did not. The three best fitting models indicated that a decision threshold of 1.2 mines per flush was equivalent to 50% of flushes infested. From a practical point of view, the transition from 25% infestation of flushes through 50% is so rapid that it may be prudent to take action when the 25% level is reached; otherwise, the 50% may be passed before the crop is checked again. For valuable nursery stock should infestation be detected in spring, it may be advisable to apply prophylactic treatment as the midseason flush starts. 相似文献

Cooperation should be favored under environmental conditions allowing the preferential interaction of cooperators among themselves and limiting interactions with defectors. Bacteria cooperating to kill competitors by secreting a toxin evolved during several hundred generations in two environments: a viscous environment that should promote cooperator assortment, and a nonviscous environment that should not allow such preferential interaction. A quantitative decrease in cooperation was observed in all populations, but as expected, cooperation was maintained at a higher level in the viscous environment. Mutants that are resistant against but not producing the toxin were identified at a low frequency in a few populations from the viscous environment and at a high frequency in all the populations from the nonviscous environment. The underlying mutations were identified. Relative fitness of the cooperator and mutant genotypes were obtained with bacteria that were isogenic, except for the identified mutations. Competition experiments indicated that cooperation is not favored by environmental viscosity as imposed in our system and suggested that when it comes to cooperation, environmental viscosity should be considered not only in terms of individual movement, but also in terms of the distribution of the public good. 相似文献
