To compare the benefits for carbon (C) sequestration of afforestation with a multifunctional oak–beech forest vs. a poplar short‐rotation coppice (SRC), model simulations were run through a serial linkage of a mechanistic model and an accounting model. The process model SECRETS (Stand to Ecosystem CaRbon and EvapoTranspiration Simulator) was used to predict growth, C allocation and soil C. The output from SECRETS was used as an input for the C accounting model GORCAM (Graz Oak Ridge Carbon Accounting Model) yielding data on C sequestration in wood products, substitution of wood fuel for fossil fuel and total CO2 emission reduction. Such C accounting based on a process model enables a more realistic calculation of forest growth, litter decomposition and soil processes. Moreover, it allows simulating the influence of climate change on the C budget. Net primary production of an oak–beech forest is low, a stable 2.5 t C ha?1 yr?1 after 150 years, compared to 6.2 t C ha?1 yr?1 for a SRC plantation. But while the yield from the SRC poplar is used as fuel and thus returns quickly to the atmosphere, the yield from the oak‐beech forest is used in long‐lasting wood products. The total C pool in the mixed forest (living biomass, wood products and soil) after 150 years amounts to 324 t C ha?1 compared to 162 in the poplar coppice. However, when account is taken of the energy substitution, coppice culture reduces emissions with 24.3–29.3 t CO2 ha?1 yr?1 while the mixed forest reduces only 6.2–7.1 t CO2 ha?1 yr?1. These results demonstrate the added value of combining detailed process models with C‐accounting models to improve the predictive capacity of model simulations.  相似文献

Anions were found to have a number of different effects on the reconstituted ADP / ATP carrier from mitochondria. (1) Binding of adenine nucleotides to the active site of the translocator is competitively inhibited by various anions. These anions can be arranged in a sequence of increasing competitive effect due to their order in a lyotropic series, and also due to increasing charge. (2) Apart from this competition effect, the presence of a sufficiently high concentration of anions turned out to be absolutely essential for functional ADP / ATP exchange in the reconstituted system. The activating anions too can be arranged in sequence, similar to that of the competition effect. The adenine nucleotide transport shows sigmoidal dependence on the stimulating anions with a Hill coefficient of n = 2. Addition of anions does not change the basic amount of functionally active translocator molecules. (3) The different effects of anions, i.e., inhibition and activation, were shown to take place at different sites and to be due to different mechanisms. Anions compete with substrates both at the outer (cytosolic) and at the inner (matrix) active site, whereas anion activation is observed solely by interaction with the cytosolic side of the translocator protein. (4) Activation of the reconstituted ADP / ATP exchange by anions could be discriminated from an activating influence of anionic phospholipids in the surroundings of the carrier protein.  相似文献

Edge effects are thought to play a key role in fragmented habitats. It is often assumed that edge-avoiding species are more prone to local extinction than non-edge-avoiding species, but there are few data to support this assumption. Also, few data are available on the effects of edges on some groups, and there is little understanding of seasonal changes in edge effect intensity. To better understand the role that edge effects play in fragmented tropical forests, we assessed the distribution of reptiles and amphibians in six littoral rainforest fragments in southeastern Madagascar in 1999 (dry season) and 2000 (wet season). Using randomization tests, we found all three types of edge responses: edge-avoiders, interior-avoiders, and omnipresent species. However, edge responses varied considerably among seasons. For example, some species (e.g., Mantidactylus bicalcaratus, Phelsuma quadriocellata) were strong edge-avoiders in the dry season, but showed no preference for edge or interior habitats during the wet season. Also, edge-avoiding species tended to be more extinction-prone than non-edge-avoiding species. Abiotic data documented significantly higher temperatures and dew point temperatures near edges. Wind speed also tended to be higher and relative humidity tended to be lower near edges. Our results indicate that many amphibians and reptiles respond to altered microclimates near edges and these responses have a strong seasonal component. For many species, edge sensitivity does seem to be correlated with extinction vulnerability and therefore should be of primary consideration in plans to conserve biodiversity in fragmented tropical forests.  相似文献

Yeast (Y) and hyphal (H) cells of Mucor rouxii and Candida albicans were cultivated in liquid media containing different carbon nutrient sources (glucose, fructose, ribose), and their free acyclic polyol and trehalose contents determined using capillary gas liquid chromatography (TMS- and OAc-derivatization). Irrespective of growth form and C-source, the fraction of the water-soluble neutral components of the cellular mass of the cultures — highly homogeneous with regard to the respective cell form produced — contained glycerol, ribitol and arabitol, in addition to trehalose. The polyols contributed 0.5–2% to the biomass of M. rouxii and 1.5–6% to that of C. albicans; the values for trehalose ranged from 0.2–11% in the former and 1–3.5% in the latter species. Mucor contained higher amounts of ribitol and arabitol in H cells and larger quantities of trehalose and glycerol in Y cells. In Candida, too, hyphae always exhibited higher ribitol contents, whereas arabitol attained higher levels in yeasts under almost any conditions — regardless of the type of medium (synthetic vs. complex), stage of culture (early vs. late log-phase) and strain used. Glycerol concentration was not correlated with the growth form; trehalose contents tended to be higher in Y cells. Taking into account the facts that C. albicans and certain Mucor species are agents of opportunistic infections and are invasive mainly in the filamentous form, and that the prospective hosts do not accumulate either of these carbohydrates, the possibility is considered of using trehalose- and polyol-metabolizing enzymes as targets for designing antifungal drugs.  相似文献

We have undertaken aggregation experiments using mouse LMTK-fibroblasts transfected with various isotypes of the neural cell adhesion molecule, NCAM. We found that selfaggregation of NCAM-positive fibroblasts is enhanced compared to control-transfected cells. The aggregation properties are partly dependent on the expressed NCAM isotype. Fibroblasts expressing a NCAM 140 isotype with exons a3 and π were further tested in primary cerebellum cell re-aggregation experiments. While control-transfected fibroblasts could not be found in forming aggregates, fibroblasts ectopically expressing NCAM were integrated into neural cell aggregates. Time-lapse photography indicated that the nascent primary cell aggregates actively participated in the integration process by migration and attachment to nearby NCAM-positive fibroblasts.  相似文献

Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) is a mixture of two hemocyanin isoforms, termed KLH1 and KLH2. Within KLH1 eight oxygen-binding functional units (FUs), 1-a to 1-h, have been identified, in contrast to KLH2, which was previously thought to be organized in seven FUs (2-a to 2-g). By limited proteolysis of KLH2 subunits, isolation of the polypeptide fragments, and N-terminal sequencing, we have now identified an eighth FU of type h, with a molecular mass of 43 kDa. This is unusually small for a FU h from a gastropodan hemocyanin. It is also shown that KLH2 didecamers can be split into a stable and homogeneous population of decamers by dialysis against 50 mM Tris/HCl, pH 7.5, in the absence of divalent cations. Electron microscopic immunolocalization using a specific monoclonal antibody reveals that FU KLH2-h is located at the collar of the decamer.  相似文献

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate whether small differences in UV-B irradiance would lead to changes in competition between cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L. cv. Athos) and white clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. Mervi). Plants were grown in greenhouses covered with different thicknesses of UV-transmittant plexi (3 and 5 mm) resulting in 82 % and 88 % of ambient UV-B radiation. Aboveground biomass was harvested at 4-week intervals and the vertical distribution of biomass, leaf thickness and specific leaf area were determined. Tillering, stubble and root biomass and crop height were also measured. There was only one significant effect: at 88 % of ambient UV-B radiation a larger fraction of the biomass was present in the lower layers and a smaller fraction was present in the upper layers.  相似文献
