In a detailed investigation of 174 patients who wore patches over both eyes after ocular operations, some 35 per cent were observed to have one or more symptoms of mental aberrations. In a smaller group who had repair of retinal detachment and therefore had to wear eye patches for a much longer time, the incidence of mental symptoms was 100 per cent. A common symptom called “noncompliance” was found which has hitherto been regarded simply as lack of cooperation by the patient.The incidence of postoperative complications was considerably higher in patients who had symptoms of mental disturbance than in those who did not.In these circumstances it would appear worth while to prepare the patient mentally for operation, to give him assurances beforehand, and to take measures to reduce his “isolation” while he has to wear patches.  相似文献

The kinetics of regain of the native ellipticity in the far- and near-UV spectra have been investigated during the refolding at pH 7.8 and 20 degrees C of guanidine-unfolded, nonreduced hen egg white lysozyme. Stopped-flow studies showed that the ellipticities at 260 and 289.5 nm exhibit biphasic kinetics with rate constants of about 50 s-1 and 2.5 s-1 for the rapid and slow phase, respectively. The ellipticity in the far-UV obeyed triphasic kinetics. In addition to a rapid and a slow phase with rate constants similar to those observed in the near-UV, a "burst" of ellipticity was shown to occur in the dead time of the experiments. The effects of low pH and of concentrations of guanidine ranging from 0.075 to 1.5 M on the rapid and slow rate constants were studied. Under all conditions investigated, the rate constants observed in the far- and near-UV for a given phase were the same, thus suggesting that the molecular events observed in the two regions of the UV spectrum are either identical or strongly coupled. Continuous-flow experiments at different wavelengths between 214 and 240 nm under conditions where the dead time for the observation was only 4 ms, followed by a detailed analysis of the kinetics of ellipticity change at each wavelength, provided the spectrum of the molecular species formed at the end of the burst phase. The flowering response of thin layers excised from branch internodes of Nicotiana tabacum cv. Maryland Catterton (quantitative short-day plant for induction) was studied under three photoperiodic treatments. The explants were excised from inflorescences bearing flowers only, flowers and green fruits, or from infructescences with green fruits only. The aim of the study was to investigate the post-inductive photoperiodic effects on in vitro flower bud formation in a quantitative short-day tobacco and the relation with infructescence development. Short days quantitatively enhanced the flower bud regeneration capacities of explants in all stages of development, both as number of explants induced to produce flowers and as mean number of flowers per explant. There was no significant difference in flower bud formation on explants of the first two stages, which produced much more flowers than those of the third stage. Observations in planta showed that, during the 20 days separating the second stage from the first stage, there was no significant difference in the number of floral buds and flowers present on the inflorescence; however, the branch internodes lengthened, as did the floral buds and flowers. During the 10 days leading to the third stage, the number of capsules did not change significantly, but a high rate of floral abscission occurred. The present results show that in Nicotiana tabacum cv. Maryland Catterton short day quantitatively controls not only the inductive step of the flowering process, but also affects the capacity to regenerate flower buds during the late post-inductive phases. The responsiveness to the photoperiodic signal decreases only when the plant exhibits only fruits.  相似文献

High-pressure liquid-chromatography and microcalorimetry have been used to determine equilibrium constants and enthalpies of reaction for the disproportionation reaction of adenosine 5′-diphosphate (ADP) to adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) andadenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP). Adenylate kinase was used to catalyze this reaction. The measurements were carried out over the temperature range 286 to 311 K, at ionic strengths varying from 0.06 to 0.33 mol kg−1, over the pH range 6.04 to 8.87, and over the pMg range 2.22 to 7.16, where pMg = -log a(Mg2+). The equilibrium model developed by Goldberg and Tewari (see the previous paper in this issue) was used for the analysis of the measurements. Thus, for the reference reaction: 2 ADp3− (ao) AMp2− (ao)+ ATp (ao), K° = 0.225 ± 0.010, ΔG° = 3.70 +- 0.11 kJ mol −1, ΔH° = −1.5 ± 1. 5 kJ mol −1, °S ° = −17 ± 5 J mol−1 K−1, and ACPp°≈ = −46 J mo1l−1 K−1 at 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa. These results and the thermodynamic parameters for the auxiliary equilibria in solution have been used to model the thermodynamics of the disproportionation reaction over a wide range of temperature, pH, ionic strength, and magnesium ion morality. Under approximately physiological conditions (311.15 K, pH 6.94, [Mg2+] = 1.35 × 10−3 mol kg−1, and I = 0.23 mol kg−1) the apparent equilibrium constant (KA′ = m(ΣAMP)m(ΣATP)/[ m(ΣADP)]2) for the overall disproportionation reaction is equal to 0.93 ± 0.02. Thermodynamic data on the disproportionation reaction and literature values for this apparent equilibrium constant in human red blood cells are used to calculate a morality of 1.94 × 10−4 mol kg−1 for free magnesium ion in human red blood cells. The results are also discussed in relation to thermochemical cycles and compared with data on the hydrolysis of the guanosine phosphates.  相似文献
