Understanding stopover decisions of long-distance migratory birds is crucial for conservation and management of these species along their migratory flyway. Recently, an increasing number of Barnacle geese breeding in the Russian Arctic have delayed their departure from their wintering site in the Netherlands by approximately one month and have reduced their staging duration at stopover sites in the Baltic accordingly. Consequently, this extended stay increases agricultural damage in the Netherlands. Using a dynamic state variable approach we explored three hypotheses about the underlying causes of these changes in migratory behavior, possibly related to changes in (i) onset of spring, (ii) potential intake rates and (iii) predation danger at wintering and stopover sites. Our simulations showed that the observed advance in onset of spring contradicts the observed delay of departure, whereas both increased predation danger and decreased intake rates in the Baltic can explain the delay. Decreased intake rates are expected as a result of increased competition for food in the growing Barnacle goose population. However, the effect of predation danger in the model was particularly strong, and we hypothesize that Barnacle geese avoid Baltic stopover sites as a response to the rapidly increasing number of avian predators in the area. Therefore, danger should be considered as an important factor influencing Barnacle goose migratory behavior, and receive more attention in empirical studies.  相似文献

The plant pathogenic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. aeschynomene utilizes external tryptophan to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) through the intermediate indole-3-acetamide (IAM). We studied the effects of tryptophan, IAA, and IAM on IAA biosynthesis in fungal axenic cultures and on in planta IAA production by the fungus. IAA biosynthesis was strictly dependent on external tryptophan and was enhanced by tryptophan and IAM. The fungus produced IAM and IAA in planta during the biotrophic and necrotrophic phases of infection. The amounts of IAA produced per fungal biomass were highest during the biotrophic phase. IAA production by this plant pathogen might be important during early stages of plant colonization.  相似文献

Conserved eukaryotic signaling proteins participate in development and disease in plant-pathogenic fungi. Strains with mutations in CGA1, a heterotrimeric G protein G alpha subunit gene of the maize pathogen Cochliobolus heterostrophus, are defective in several developmental pathways. Conidia from CGA1 mutants germinate as abnormal, straight-growing germ tubes that form few appressoria, and the mutants are female sterile. Nevertheless, these mutants can cause normal lesions on plants, unlike other filamentous fungal plant pathogens in which functional homologues of CGA1 are required for full virulence. Deltacga1 mutants of C. heterostrophus were less infective of several maize varieties under most conditions, but not all, as virulence was nearly normal on detached leaves. This difference could be related to the rapid senescence of detached leaves, since delaying senescence with cytokinin also had differential effects on the virulence of the wild type and the Deltacga1 mutant. In particular, detached leaves may provide a more readily available nutrient source than attached leaves. Decreased fitness of Deltacga1 as a pathogen may reflect conditions under which full virulence requires signal transduction through CGA1-mediated pathways. The virulence of these signal transduction mutants is thus affected differentially by the physiological state of the host.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine the digestive tract colonisation of the newborns by multiple drug resistant bacteria during hospitalization. On the day of admission, after 5 days of hospitalization and at the day of discharge swabs from the anus of the 31 newborns hospitalized in OITiPN were taken and cultured on nutrient and selective media for staphylococci, enterococci, gram negative bacilli and fungi. Susceptibility to antibiotics of bacteria was determined, with giving attention to such resistance mechanisms as: methicillin resistant staphylococci (MRS), high level aminoglycoside resistant (HLAR) and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) and the production of extended spectrum beta-lactamases (type ESBL) by gram negative bacilli. On the day of admission in 7 newborns methicillin resistant staphylococci (MRSCN) were grown in 24 no multiple drug resistant bacteria were found. Among those in 23 already after 5 days of hospitalization, colonization by multiple drug resistant strains was determined: coagulase-negative methicillin resistant staphylococci (MRSCN) were found in 16 children, strains of enterococci (HLAR) in 3 newborns and gram negative ESBL (+) bacilli also in 3 cases. On the day of discharge from hospital (after 13-141 days) in 23 out of 24 newborns enteric tract colonization by multiple drug resistant strains was assessed. In the enteric tract of 3 newborns hospitalized up to 2 weeks coagulase-negative methicillin resistant staphylococci (MRSCN) and/or HLAR enterococci were found; gram negative bacilli that produce ESBL appeared in newborns hospitalized for longer than 14 days. They were isolated in 12 out of 21 newborns. Forming of the enteric tract bacterial flora of the long hospitalized newborns depends on the time of hospitalization as well as on the used therapy.  相似文献

There are many methods used to represent joint kinematics (e.g., roll, pitch, and yaw angles; instantaneous center of rotation; kinematic center; helical axis). Often in biomechanics internal landmarks are inferred from external landmarks. This study represents mandibular kinematics using a non-orthogonal floating axis joint coordinate system based on 3-D geometric models with parameters that are "clinician friendly" and mathematically rigorous. Kinematics data for two controls were acquired from passive fiducial markers attached to a custom dental clutch. The geometric models were constructed from MRI data. The superior point along the arc of the long axis of the condyle was used to define the coordinate axes. The kinematic data and geometric models were registered through fiducial markers visible during both protocols. The mean absolute maxima across the subjects for sagittal rotation, coronal rotation, axial rotation, medial-lateral translation, anterior-posterior translation, and inferior-superior translation were 34.10 degrees, 1.82 degrees, 1.14 degrees, 2.31, 21.07, and 6.95 mm, respectively. All the parameters, except for one subject's axial rotation, were reproducible across two motion recording sessions. There was a linear correlation between sagittal rotation and translation, the dominant motion plane, with approximately 1.5 degrees of rotation per millimeter of translation. The novel approach of combining the floating axis system with geometric models succinctly described mandibular kinematics with reproducible and clinician friendly parameters.  相似文献

A tandem pair of nearly identical genes from Serpulina hyodysenteriae (B204) were cloned and sequenced. The full open reading frame of one gene and the partial open reading frame of the neighboring gene appear to encode secreted proteins which are homologous to, yet distinct from, the 39-kDa extracytoplasmic protein purified from the membrane fraction of S. hyodysenteriae. We have designated these newly identified genes vspA and vspB (for variable surface protein).  相似文献

A rapid and sensitive method for the extraction and quantification of penicillin-G and procaine in horse urine and plasma samples has been successfully developed. The method involves the use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) for penicillin-G, liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) for procaine, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the quantification of penicillin-G and procaine. The new method described here has been successfully applied in the pharmacokinetic studies of procaine, penicillin-G and procaine–penicillin-G administrations in the horse.  相似文献
