1. The effects of body size and asymmetry in morphological traits on field fitness were studied in the parasitoid Trichogramma carverae .
2. Significant fluctuating asymmetry was detected in four bristle counts and two wing measurements made on forewings. There was no evidence for directional asymmetry in any of the traits. An estimate of field fitness was obtained in grapevines by collecting released wasps arriving at oviposition sites consisting of egg rafts of the tortricid Epiphyas postvittana .
3. Comparisons of ovipositing and emergence samples indicated that wasps at oviposition sites were relatively larger and more variable in their size distribution. A non-parametric analysis of the relationship between fitness and size indicated that extremely large wasps had the highest fitness and suggested that small as well as large wasps may have had a fitness advantage.
4. For asymmetry, the only trait showing an association with field fitness was wing length. Wasps with a low length asymmetry were more likely to be collected at oviposition sites, although fitness curves indicated that wasps had a similar fitness once an intermediate length asymmetry was exceeded.
5. Mother–daughter comparisons for wasps from a genetically heterogeneous stock provided no evidence that size measures or asymmetries were heritable when wasps were reared on a factitious host.

Abstract Exotic grasses are becoming increasingly abundant in Neotropical savannas, with Melinis minutiflora Beauv. being particularly invasive. To better understand the consequences for the native flora, we performed a field study to test the effect of this species on the establishment, survival and growth of seedlings of seven tree species native to the savannas and forests of the Cerrado region of Brazil. Seeds of the tree species were sown in 40 study plots, of which 20 were sites dominated by M. minutiflora, and 20 were dominated by native grasses. The exotic grass had no discernable effect on initial seedling emergence, as defined by the number of seedlings present at the end of the first growing season. Subsequent seedling survival in plots dominated by M. minutiflora was less than half that of plots dominated by native species. Consequently, at the end of the third growing season, invaded plots had only 44% as many seedlings as plots with native grasses. Above‐ground grass biomass of invaded plots was more than twice that of uninvaded plots, while seedling survival was negatively correlated with grass biomass, suggesting that competition for light may explain the low seedling survival where M. minutiflora is dominant. Soils of invaded plots had higher mean Ca, Mg and Zn, but these variables did not account for the higher grass biomass or the lower seedling survival in invaded plots. The results indicate that this exotic grass is having substantial effects on the dynamics of the tree community, with likely consequences for ecosystem structure and function.  相似文献

Life history traits are critical components of fitness and frequently reflect adaptive responses to environmental pressures. However, few genes that contribute to natural life history variation have been identified. Insulin signalling mediates the determination of life history traits in many organisms, and single gene manipulation in Drosophila melanogaster suggests that individual genes in the pathway have the potential to produce major effects on these quantitative traits. We evaluated allelic variation at two insulin signalling genes, the Insulin‐like Receptor (InR) and its substrate, chico, in natural populations of D. melanogaster. We found different patterns of variation: InR shows evidence of positive selection and clines in allele frequency across latitude; chico exhibits neutral patterns of evolution. The clinal patterns at InR are replicated between North America and Australia, showing striking similarity in the distribution of specific alleles and the rate at which allele frequencies change across latitude. Moreover, we identified a polymorphism at InR that appears to be functionally significant and consistent with hypothetical patterns of selection across geography. This polymorphism provides new characterization of genic regions of functionality within InR, and is likely a component in a suite of genes and traits that respond adaptively to climatic variation.  相似文献

The general phylogeographical paradigm for eastern North America (ENA) is that many plant and animal species retreated into southern refugia during the last glacial period, then expanded northward after the last glacial maximum (LGM). However, some taxa of the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plain (GACP) demonstrate complex yet recurrent distributional patterns that cannot be explained by this model. For example, eight co‐occurring endemic plant taxa with ranges from New York to South Carolina exhibit a large disjunction separating northern and southern populations by >300 km. Pyxidanthera (Diapensiaceae), a plant genus that exhibits this pattern, consists of two taxa recognized as either species or varieties. We investigated the taxonomy and phylogeography of Pyxidanthera using morphological data, cpDNA sequences, and amplified fragment length polymorphism markers. Morphological characters thought to be important in distinguishing Pyxidanthera barbulata and P. brevifolia demonstrate substantial overlap with no clear discontinuities. Genetic differentiation is minimal and diversity estimates for northern and southern populations of Pxyidanthera are similar, with no decrease in rare alleles in northern populations. In addition, the northern populations harbour several unique cpDNA haplotypes. Pyxidanthera appears to consist of one morphologically variable species that persisted in or near its present range at least through the latter Pleistocene, while the vicariance of the northern and southern populations may be comparatively recent. This work demonstrates that the refugial paradigm is not always appropriate and GACP endemic plants, in particular, may exhibit phylogeographical patterns qualitatively different from those of other ENA plant species.  相似文献

In previous experiments we found that Drosophila melanogaster lines selected for increased adult desiccation resistance had increased resistance to other environmental stresses at the adult stage including starvation, intense 60Co-γ radiation and a toxic ethanol level. In further studies on these lines, we now show that selection did not alter resistance to desiccation and ethanol at the larval stage. As well as having a lower early fecundity, selected lines showed increased adult male longevity and increased viability at high larval densities compared with control lines. There were no changes in development time or mating success. The increased male longevity is consistent with the reduced metabolic rate of the selected lines.
A genetic correlation between resistance to different stresses was confirmed by an analysis of isofemale lines derived from a population founded by flies from a stress-resistant line and an unselected line. The results are consistent with the existence of genes segregating in natural populations conferring increased general stress resistance.  相似文献
