Abstract By contrast to females that can maximize reproductive success with only one or a few copulations, males generally increase their fitness with frequency of mating. Sperm storage and allocation is therefore crucial for both male and female fitness. Sperm storage in Aleochara bilineata (Coleoptera; Staphylinidae) is investigated by measuring the number of spermatozoa stored in the female spermatheca after single, double or triple successive copulations with different males. The potential advantages of polyandry are studied in terms of the number of sperm stored by females mated twice with the same male (i.e. repeated copulation), compared with females mated twice with two different virgin males (i.e. polyandry). Level of polygyny is also estimated by measuring sperm allocation when ten successive mates are offered to a virgin male. Aleochara bilineata females store the sperm of the same or different males additively, suggesting no advantage for polyandry in terms of the number of sperm stored. A virgin male is able to inseminate ten different females but the number of sperm transferred decreases linearly. Finally, the latencies and durations of copulations are measured in all experiments to estimate changes according to the male or female status (i.e. virgin or mated). The latency before mating is higher when females are virgin than when females have already mated.  相似文献

A new species of white‐eye, the Vanikoro White‐eye Zosterops gibbsi, is described from the island of Vanikoro (= Vanikolo) in the Santa Cruz Islands (= Temotu Province) within the Solomon Islands. It differs from the geographically closest white‐eye, the Santa Cruz White‐eye Zosterops sanctaecrucis, by a number of features including a much longer bill, and different leg‐ and eye‐ring colour. This is the second bird species endemic to Vanikoro; the neighbouring Nendo Island supports three endemic species. Although the conservation status of this species appears to be secure, the Santa Cruz Islands are very poorly known. Despite supporting several globally threatened species, the Islands at present are not protected by any conservation activity.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. For animal species that forage on patchily distributed resources, patch time allocation is of prime importance to their reproductive success. According to Charnov's marginal value theorem (MVT), the rate of patch encounter should influence negatively the patch residence time: as the rate of patch encounter decreases, the patch residence time increases. Moreover, the MVT predicts that animals should stay longer in high quality patches.
2. Using the aphid parasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi (Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae), the effects of these two factors (patch encounter rate and host density) were combined in order to test if the increment in patch residence time for a given decrease in patch encounter rate was larger for high quality patches than for low quality patches.
3. The results show a significant effect of the interaction between the two factors. In high host density patches, parasitoids spent more time if they experienced a low patch encounter rate, while in low host density patches, patch encounter rate had no significant effect on the patch residence time. This suggests that the response of A. rhopalosiphi females to patch encounter rate varied with host density in the patch. Moreover, the same interaction effect was observed for the number of ovipositor contacts on aphids.
4. Parasitoid females can use patch encounter rate to estimate patch density in the habitat but the effect of this estimate on their patch residence time is modulated by patch quality. Staying longer in a patch when patches are rare is more advantageous when the fitness gained by doing so is large. In low quality patches, the expected fitness gain is small and the female may gain more by leaving and taking her chance at finding another patch.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Numerous techniques have been proposed to estimate carnivore abundance and density, but few have been validated against populations of known size. We used a density estimate established by intensive monitoring of a population of radiotagged leopards (Panthera pardus) with a detection probability of 1.0 to evaluate efficacy of track counts and camera-trap surveys as population estimators. We calculated densities from track counts using 2 methods and compared performance of 10 methods for calculating the effectively sampled area for camera-trapping data. Compared to our reference density (7.33 ± 0.44 leopards/100 km2), camera-trapping generally produced more accurate but less precise estimates than did track counts. The most accurate result (6.97 ± 1.88 leopards/100 km2) came from camera-trap data with a sampled area buffered by a boundary strip representing the mean maximum distance moved by leopards outside the survey area (MMDMOSA) established by telemetry. However, contrary to recent suggestions, the traditional method of using half the mean maximum distance moved from photographic recaptures did not result in gross overestimates of population density (6.56 ± 1.92 leopards/100 km2) but rather displayed the next best performance after MMDMOSA. The only track-count method comparable to reference density employed a capture-recapture framework applied to data when individuals were identified from their tracks (6.45 ± 1.43 leopards/100 km2) but the underlying assumptions of this technique limit more widespread application. Our results demonstrate that if applied correctly, camera-trap surveys represent the best balance of rigor and cost-effectiveness for estimating abundance and density of cryptic carnivore species that can be identified individually.  相似文献

Preferences for mates carrying dissimilar genes at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) may help animals increase offspring pathogen resistance or avoid inbreeding. Such preferences have been reported across a range of vertebrates, but have rarely been investigated in social species other than humans. We investigated mate choice and MHC dynamics in wild baboons (Papio ursinus). MHC Class II DRB genes and 16 microsatellite loci were genotyped across six groups (199 individuals). Based on the survey of a key segment of the gene‐rich MHC, we found no evidence of mate choice for MHC dissimilarity, diversity or rare MHC genotypes. First, MHC dissimilarity did not differ from random expectation either between parents of the same offspring or between immigrant males and females from the same troop. Second, female reproductive success was not influenced by MHC diversity or genotype frequency. Third, population genetic structure analysis revealed equally high genotypic differentiation among troops, and comparable excess heterozygosity within troops for juveniles, at both Mhc‐DRB and neutral loci. Nevertheless, the age structure of Mhc‐DRB heterozygosity suggested higher longevity for heterozygotes, which should favour preferences for MHC dissimilarity. We propose that high levels of within‐group outbreeding, resulting from group‐living and sex‐biased dispersal, might weaken selection for MHC‐disassortative mate choice.  相似文献

1. Dramatic advances have been made recently in the study of biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (B-EF) relations and food web ecology. These fields are now starting to converge, and this fusion has the potential to improve our understanding of how environmental stressors modulate ecosystem processes and the supply of 'goods and services'.
2. Food web structure and dynamics can exert particularly strong influences on B-EF relations in fresh waters, as consumer–resource interactions (e.g. trophic cascades) are often more important than horizontal interactions within trophic levels. For instance, many freshwater food webs are size structured, with large organisms tending to occupy the higher trophic levels and often exerting powerful effects on ecosystem processes. However, because they are also vulnerable to perturbations, non-random losses of these large taxa can alter both food web structure and ecosystem functioning profoundly.
3. Recently, the focus of food web research has shifted away from exploring patterns, towards developing an understanding of processes (e.g. quantifying fluxes of individuals, biomass, energy, nutrients) and how the two interact. Many of the best-characterized food webs are from fresh waters, and these ecosystems are now being used to address some of the shortcomings of earlier B-EF studies. I have identified several key gaps in our current knowledge and highlighted potentially fruitful avenues of future B-EF and food web research.
4. A major challenge for this newly emerging research is to place it within a unified theoretical framework. The application of metabolic theory and ecological stoichiometry may help to achieve this goal by considering biological systems within the constraints imposed upon them by physical and chemical laws.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Acanthamoeba are free-living amoebae that are dispersed in most environments. Occasionally, Acanthamoeba cause serious human infections, such as keratitis and encephalitis. During the infection process, amoebic adhesion to, and degradation of, host cells and their extracellular matrix (ECM) appear to be important requirements. We examined the interaction of Acanthamoeba with the ECM, and related this event to host cell destruction and tissue invasion. Pathogenic Acanthamoeba culbertsoni differentially attached on the ECM glycoproteins laminin-1, collagen-I, and fibronectin, as compared with non-pathogenic Acanthamoeba astronyxis . Binding to collagen-I and laminin-1 induced A. culbertsoni to become flattened and elongated. Because attachment on laminin-1 was higher in A. culbertsoni , laminin-1 was chosen for further analysis. A 55-kDa laminin-binding protein was identified in pathogenic amoebae, but it was not found in non-pathogenic amoebae. No differential cytotoxicity against distinct cell types was observed between A. culbertsoni incubated with or without ECM. On the other hand, binding on collagen-I or matrigel scaffolds induced a differential effect where A. culbertsoni invaded collagen-I matrices more rapidly. These results indicate that ECM recognition, as an antecedent to tissue invasion, may be a trait characteristic of pathogenic Acanthamoeba .  相似文献
