When selection strongly favours a testosterone-dependent trait in males, and this trait is not beneficial to females, a correlated response to selection in females, which also circulate some testosterone, could slow the rate of evolution in males. Here I investigate whether experimental testosterone treatment in female Superb Fairy-wrens Malurus cyaneus can induce the testosterone-dependent sexually selected moult into nuptial plumage, as it does in males. Silastic testosterone implants in females rapidly induced a moult akin to the male prenuptial moult, involving all body areas that are colourful in nuptial males (head, upper back, ear tufts, breast). Moreover, the newly moulted feathers had a similar glistening appearance and morphology as male nuptial feathers. However, the treatment failed to induce production of the blue and black structural colours, and the breast and ear tufts were lighter than the normal grey-brown feathers of females and males in eclipse plumage. Microscopic and ultrastructural analyses of these unusual feathers could further our understanding of structural colour production. 相似文献

In three field experiments in 1985 and 1986, we studied the effect of the date of primary infection on the spread of beet yellows closterovirus (BYV) and beet mild yellowing luteovirus (BMW) from artificially inoculated sugar beet plants. Laboratory-reared vector aphids, Myzus persicae, were placed on these sources of virus. There was no substantial natural immigration of vectors or viruses. In two experiments, one with BMYV in 1985 and the other in BYV in 1986, populations of vector aphids remained low and there was little virus spread, i.e. c. 50 infected plants from one primarily infected source. The cause of this small amount of spread was the low number of vector aphids. In the third experiment, with BYV in 1986, large populations of M. persicae developed and there was substantial virus spread: c. 2000 infected plants in the plots which were inoculated before canopy closure. In later-inoculated plots in the same experiment, there was much less spread: c. 100 infected plants per virus source plant. Differences between fields in predator impact are implicated as the most probable factor causing differences in vector establishment and virus spread between these three experiments. Virus spread decreased with later inoculation in all three experiments. A mathematical model of virus spread incorporating results from our work has been used to calculate how the initial proportion of infected plants in a crop affects the final virus incidence. This model takes into account the effect of predation on the development of the aphid populations. The processes underlying the spread and its timing are discussed. 相似文献

The increase of 35 English field populations of potato cyst-nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis and/or G. pallida) was measured on Désirée, Maris Piper, Caxton (A25/11), Cromwell (A27/20) and clone 11233 ab 22 in pots of sandy, silty or peaty loam soil. Désirée was susceptible to all populations tested and, as in field soils, the final population (Pf) was inversely related to the initial population of potato cyst-nematode eggs (Pi) in the soil. Maris Piper and Cromwell were resistant to all G. rostochiensis populations, with one possible exception. Maris Piper was susceptible to all G. pallida populations. Caxton was susceptible to some and fairly resistant to other populations of G. rostochiensis, indicating the existence either of two biotypes within the one pathotype (Rol) as yet encountered in Britain, or the existence of an additional pathotype. Caxton and Cromwell were fairly resistant to G. pallida. Clone 11233 ab 22 was only moderately resistant to both species. Resistance to potato cyst-nematode increase varied considerably, especially in Caxton (to G. rostochiensis) and in 11233 ab 22 (to both species). Oxamyl greatly reduced the increase of G. rostochiensis populations on Désirée potatoes, with the notable exception of one population but it generally had much less effect on G. pallida populations, regardless of soil type. The difference in effect on the two species may be due to a longer period of hatching in G. pallida than in G. rostochiensis and also perhaps to a second generation in G. pallida. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Spotted hyaena Crocuta crocuta whoops are loud calls normally produced in a sequence termed a bout. Whoops are produced by hyaenas irrespective of age or sex to display identity and convey information about the location of the caller. The majority (91%, n=460) of whoops produced by spotted hyaenas, from two geographically separate populations in southern Africa and one population in eastern Africa, showed pronounced nonlinear phenomena, predominantly subharmonics. Whoops produced by males and females had a similarly high probability of sub- harmonics, and 91.5% of the 78 bouts examined contained calls with subharmonics. These results provide evidence that nonlinear vocal phenomena are a common feature of hyaena whoops. The presence of subharmonics in whoops may be enhanced by vocal tract resonances when the fundamental frequency and first formant in the calls are close or coincide. Vocal membranes may also play a role. The high incidence of subharmonics in whoops may enhance individual recognition by adding structural complexity to calls. As 33 of 34 individually known spotted hyaenas examined in this study produced whoops containing subharmonics, it is unlikely that the production of subharmonics is confined to calls from individuals of a particular social status, sex, size, or level of developmental asymmetry, as proposed for nonlinear phenomena in the calls of other mammalian species, although variation in structural features of subharmonics may convey information about these characteristics. 相似文献

It has been shown that addition of phosphate to phosphate deficient yeast gives rise to an immediate increase in the rate of Na+ uptake and an immediate decrease in the rate of Rb+ uptake. In addition, phosphate uptake is enhanced specifically by Na ions presumably by a process with a very high affinity for phosphate with a Km of about 2 × 10−6M at pH 7.2, whereas the Km for phosphate uptake of the Na+ independent process amounts to 1.3 × 10−4M. 相似文献
