The conservation behavior framework is useful to identify key linkages between behavior and conservation practice. We apply this framework to a novel host-parasite system on the Galapagos Islands and ask if there have been changes in parasite oviposition behavior and host mortality patterns across the first decade (2004-2013) of its known association. The Dipteran parasite Philornis downsi was first discovered in Darwin's finch nests in 1997 and is the biggest threat to the survival of Galapagos land birds. Host mortality has increased over the past decade. In Dipterans, pupation and pupae size are determined by access to host resources. Here, we test the hypothesis that P downsi flies are laying eggs in finch nests earlier in the nestling phase to maximize larval feeding time and therefore chance of pupation success before host death. The results show fewer 1st instar larvae later in the host nesting cycle in support of earlier egg laying behavior by female flies. Between 2004 and 2013, parasite intensity increased from -28 to -48 parasites per nest, host mortality increased from -50% to -90%, and host age at death decreased from -11 to -5 days. The earlier age at host death was correlated with fewer pupae (from -50% to -20%) and smaller pupae size (-10% decrease). Changes in parasite behavior reveal new fitness costs to both the parasite and Darwin's finches. These findings un- derscore the need for urgent conservation action to save Darwin's finches from extinction due to a novel, lethal and introduced parasite [Current Zoology 60 (4): 542-550, 2014].  相似文献

Shrub encroachment into grass-dominated biomes is occurring globally due to a variety of anthropogenic activities, but the consequences for carbon (C) inputs, storage and cycling remain unclear. We studied eight North American graminoid-dominated ecosystems invaded by shrubs, from arctic tundra to Atlantic coastal dunes, to quantify patterns and controls of C inputs via aboveground net primary production (ANPP). Across a fourfold range in mean annual precipitation (MAP), a key regulator of ecosystem C input at the continental scale, shrub invasion decreased ANPP in xeric sites, but dramatically increased ANPP (>1000 g m−2) at high MAP, where shrub patches maintained extraordinarily high leaf area. Concurrently, the relationship between MAP and ANPP shifted from being nonlinear in grasslands to linear in shrublands. Thus, relatively abrupt (<50 years) shifts in growth form dominance, without changes in resource quantity, can fundamentally alter continental-scale pattern of C inputs and their control by MAP in ways that exceed the direct effects of climate change alone.  相似文献

Twelve polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci were isolated from saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) and optimized for future studies of its breeding system. The loci were screened for variability among 24 individuals from two populations. The primers amplified loci with numbers of alleles ranging from four to 14 per locus and polymorphic information content from 0.481 to 0.951. To quantify the transmission of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) by Frankliniella occidentalis, the median acquisition access period (AAP50) and median inoculation access period (IAP50) were determined. These parameters were established using transmission rates obtained after AAPs and in IAPs which both ranged from 5 to 2560 min. An AAP50 of 106 min was found when larvae acquired virus from TSWV-infected Impatiens plants. IAP50s of 58 or 137 min, respectively, were calculated when petunia or Datura stramonium leaf disks were used to test the inoculation efficiency of viruliferous thrips. The virus could successfully be acquired or inoculated in periods of 5 min. Transmission reached an optimum after an AAP of 21.3 h (AAPopt) and in an IAP of 42.7 h (IAPopt). These results show that TSWV can be acquired and transmitted efficiently by F. occidentalis in short feeding periods.  相似文献

1. We tested whether or not the simultaneous hermaphrodite Dugesia polychroa mates randomly with respect to partner size, a strong indicator of female fecundity.
2. The number and duration of copulations were recorded in forty-eight pairs over 5 days. To minimize effects of individual differences in copulatory activity, all animals were each tested twice: once with an equally large partner ( n = 24 equal-sized pairs) and once with a partner of different size (smaller or larger, respectively, ratio 1 : 1.5,
n = 24 unequal-sized pairs).
3. The animals copulated frequently. No significant differences were observed between treatments in the number of pairs that copulated. Mating behaviour of equal-sized and unequal-sized pairs was compared in a pair-wise analysis. Latency to the first copulation and the average number of copulations did not differ when mating with an equal- or unequal-sized partner. Average copulation duration increased with increasing size in equal-sized pairs, but not in unequal-sized pairs.
4. In an additional experiment, where three large and three small animals were combined (three replicates) and observed for 1–3 days, the mating pattern did not differ from random mating by size.
5. Our data indicate that in D. polychroa the decision to mate is essentially random with respect to size. We argue that this is not caused by, for example, high costs of mate searching, but that simultaneous hermaphrodites with reciprocal insemination mate indiscriminately when (i) matings are easy to obtain and (ii) the cost of mating is low or compensated for by sperm digestion.  相似文献

It has been shown that addition of phosphate to phosphate deficient yeast gives rise to an immediate increase in the rate of Na+ uptake and an immediate decrease in the rate of Rb+ uptake. In addition, phosphate uptake is enhanced specifically by Na ions presumably by a process with a very high affinity for phosphate with a Km of about 2 × 10−6M at pH 7.2, whereas the Km for phosphate uptake of the Na+ independent process amounts to 1.3 × 10−4M.  相似文献
