The pH of weak-acid solutions is controlled by acid concentration (HA + A), the degree of acid dissociation (A/HA), and the strength of the acids present (pKa). We developed an empirical approach that allows the relative importance of each of these factors to be estimated for soils. This empirical model was applied to soils collected from an old-field plantation of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) at 5 and 25 years of age. During this period, soil pH dropped by 0.3 to 0.8 units, and extractable calcium, magnesium and potassium declined by 20 to 80%. The empirical model indicates that the decline in pH resulted largely from the reduction in base saturation of the exchange complex. However, the average acid strength of the exchange complex decreased during the 20 years, preventing a greater decline of perhaps 0.1 to 0.2 units in the observed pH. The rate of decrease in the acid neutralizing capacity to pH 3.5 was about 1.3 kmolc/ha annually, while the increase in base neutralizing capacity was about 2.7 and 1.6 kmolc/ha annually to pH 5.5 and 8.2, respectively. Extractable alkali and alkaline earth cations declined by about 2.2 kmolc/ha annually, matched by the rate of increase in aluminium. These changes demonstrated the dynamic nature of poorly buffered soils, and indicated that changes in soil acidity may be expected over a period of decades (especially following changes in land-use).  相似文献

Schrot.)寄生于苔草属(Carex sp.)植物上,其孢子堆生叶上,条状,粉质;黑粉孢子卵形,近球形或不规则半球形,常成对,7.5 -12.5 (-14)×5.5-(-12)µm,橄榄褐色.另一我国新记录种是鬼灯檠条黑粉菌(Urocystis rodgersiae (Miyabe) Miyabe ex Zund.),寄生在鬼灯檠(Rodgersia aesculifolia Batal.)植物上.孢子堆生叶下;孢子球27-60(-75)×25-45.5(-57µm,由1-6个黑粉孢子组成;不育细胞10-15×9-l0µm,浅褐色.黑粉孢子14-20×10-14µm,暗褐色.此种孢子球比原产于日本的模式种略大,其它特征相同.  相似文献

Usually the toxicity of superoxide is attributed lo its ability to reduce metal ions and subsequently reoxidation of the metal by hydrogen peroxide yields deleterious oxidizing species. As many other nontoxic biological reductants reduce metal compounds, we suggest that part of the mechanism of superoxide toxicity results from its ability to oxidize metal ions bound to biological targets, which subsequently degrade the target via an intramolecular electron Transfer reaction.  相似文献

Summary In the superposition eyes of the sphingid moth Deilephila and the neuropteran Ascalaphus, adjustment to different intensities is subserved by longitudinal migrations of screening pigment in specialized pigment cells. Using ophthalmoscopic techniques we have localized the light-sensitive trigger that controls pigment position.In both species, local illumination of a small spot anywhere within the eye glow of a dark-adapted eye evokes local light adaptation in the ommatidia whose facets receive the light. Details of the response pattern demonstrate that a distal light-sensitive trigger is located axially in the ommatidium, just beneath the crystalline cone, and extends with less sensitivity deep into the clear zone. The distal trigger in Deilephila was shown to be predominantly UV sensitive, and a UV-absorbing structure, presumably the distal trigger, was observed near the proximal tip of the crystalline cone.In Ascalaphus we also found another trigger located more proximally, which causes local pigment reaction in the ommatidia whose rhabdoms are illuminated (the centre of the eye glow). The light-sensitive trigger for this response appears to be the rhabdom itself.  相似文献

Mark Wicclair criticizes Allen Buchanan's and my claim that determining an appropriate level of competence (Wicclair substitutes "decisional capacity" for "competence", the import of which I note briefly below) for health care treatment decisionmaking involves balancing respecting a patient's self-determination and protecting his or her well-being. The most important implication of this balancing is that a standard of competence should vary in significant part with the effects for the patient's well-being of accepting his or her choice. Wicclair's criticisms take two main forms. First, he considers and rejects four of the positive reasons we offer in support of a risk-related standard. Second, in rejecting our fourth reason he argues that a risk-related standard leads to faulty competence determinations -- too high a standard in some cases and too low a standard in others. If he is correct, there are no positive reasons for adopting a risk-related standard and there are as well specific reasons not to adopt such a standard in order to avoid mistaken competence determinations. My response will address both sorts of criticisms in turn.  相似文献

The response of tomato plants to various chilling treatments was studied using two approaches for the measurement of photosynthetic activity. One involved the use of a portable fluorometer for the measurement of in-vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, while the other employed a newly introduced photoacoustic system which allowed changes in oxygen evolution to be followed in a leaf disc. A strong correlation was found between results obtained by each system and those obtained by a conventional open gas-exchange system for the determination of CO2 uptake. Both systems of measurements could readily distinguish between the effects of chilling in the dark (at 3° C for 18 h) and chilling at high photon flux density (2000 mol m-2 s-1 for 5h at 5° C). Chilling in the dark had practically no effect on the quantum yield of oxygen evolution, chlorophyll fluorescence or CO2 uptake, while chilling at excessively high photon flux density resulted in a sharp reduction (50–70%) in the quantum yields obtained. Developmental history and behavior of Eretmocerus mundus Mercet, a parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci was studied at 25°C. The eggs may be laid under all four nymphal instars but not under the pupa. Yet the second and third instars are preferred. The egg hatches only under the fourth instar or the pupa. Developmental medians at 25°C are: Instar I-2.5, II-4, II-4, prepupa-2 and pupa 8 days. When ovipositing, the female stands at an angle of 90° to the host, with wings raised and inserts the ovipositor under the whitefly nymph. The egg is laid close to the insertion point of the whitefly's proboscis into the leaf. After oviposition, the female apparently marks the host while drumming on it with her hind legs. She distinguishes already parasitized hosts from unparasitized ones and refrains from laying under the former. Discrimination is accomplished after antennal drumming only.
Les parasitoïdes de Bemisia tabaci (aleyrodidae) en Israel: développement, ponte et sélection des hôtes ches Eretmocerus mundus (aphelinidae)
Résumé Le développment et le comportement de E. mundus, parasitoïde de B. tabaci, ont été étudiés à 25°C. Les oeufs sont pondus sous les quatre stades larvaires (les deuxième et troizième sont préférés) mais pas sous les nymphes. Les oeufs n'éclosent que sous les larves du quatrième stade ou les nymphes. Les temps de développement médiaux sont à 25°, les suivants: stade I: 2,5j; stade II: 4j; stade III: 4j et nymphe 8j. Pendant la ponte, la femelle est à 90° sur son hôte, les ailes dressées, et insère sa tarière sous la larve d'aleurode. L'oeuf est déposé près du point d'insertion de la trompe dans la feuille. Après l'émission, la femelle marque apparemment son hôte pendant qu'elle tambourine avec ses pattes postérieures. Elle distingue les hôtes parasités ou non, et limite sa ponte dans les premiers. La sélection est effectuée seulement après tambourinage antennaire.

The endocytosis of latex particles (0.33, 0.46 and 0.80 micron in diameter) in the sinusoidal endothelial and Kupffer cells of the rat liver was studied electron microscopically. When the liver was perfused with serum-free oxygenated Krebs Ringer bicarbonate, latex particles of all three sizes were taken up by the endothelial cells. After a 10-min perfusion, particles were incorporated by the luminal cell surface of the perikarya or of the thick portion of the endothelial cells. A large patch of bristle coat was surrounding the ingested particle. The number of ingested particles in the endothelial cells, however, was much less than in the Kupffer cells. In in vivo experiments, no endocytosis of the latex particles was observed in the endothelial cells. In the Kupffer cells, particles were engulfed by the ruffled membranes or sank into the cytoplasm without a large patch of the bristle coat both in the perfusion system and in vivo. These observations show that at least 0.80 micron latex particles are taken up by the bristle-coated membranes in the sinusoidal endothelial cells of the perfused liver. The endocytic mechanism for latex particles in the endothelial cells is different from that of the Kupffer cells.  相似文献

The influence of maternal antibodies on clinical and serological response after experimental inoculation with Babesia divergens of newborn calves was studied. Five calves, born to dams seropositive for B.divergens, (Group 1) had specific maternal antibodies when tested 12 h after their first feeding of colostrum. At that point they were inoculated i.v. with B.divergens infected erythrocytes. Five other calves, born to dams seronegative for B.divergens, (Group 2) had no Babesia specific maternal antibodies when inoculated at the same age. Babesia divergens organisms were demonstrated in blood smears from calves in both groups at some point 5 to 10 days p.i. All calves in both groups had B.divergens specific IgM antibodies at 7 to 17 days p.i. as shown by a modified IF-test. Specific IgG antibodies, transferred by colostrum, were found in all calves of Group 1 before inoculation of B.divergens. The IgG titre of these animals increased by a doubling dilution step at 11–25 days p.i. Among calves of Group 2 specific IgG antibodies were found at first between day 9 and 15 p.i. Both IgM and IgG antibody titres had to be investigated since demonstrated IgG antibodies can originate both from maternally transferred antibodies and from actively produced antibodies after an infection. There was no difference in clinical parameters; parasitaemia, PCV, Hb, and rectal temperature between the groups. This experiment gives evidence that there can be a resistance to bovine babesiosis in newborn calves independent of maternal antibodies.  相似文献
