Carbon emissions from fires in tropical and subtropical ecosystems   总被引:8,自引:1,他引:8  
Global carbon emissions from fires are difficult to quantify and have the potential to influence interannual variability and long‐term trends in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. We used 4 years of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS) satellite data and a biogeochemical model to assess spatial and temporal variability of carbon emissions from tropical fires. The TRMM satellite data extended between 38°N and 38°S and covered the period from 1998 to 2001. A relationship between TRMM fire counts and burned area was derived using estimates of burned area from other satellite fire products in Africa and Australia and reported burned areas from the United States. We modified the Carnegie‐Ames‐Stanford‐Approach (CASA) biogeochemical model to account for both direct combustion losses and the decomposition from fire‐induced mortality, using both TRMM and Sea‐viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS) satellite data as model drivers. Over the 1998–2001 period, we estimated that the sum of carbon emissions from tropical fires and fuel wood use was 2.6 Pg C yr?1. An additional flux of 1.2 Pg C yr?1 was released indirectly, as a result of decomposition of vegetation killed by fire but not combusted. The sum of direct and indirect carbon losses from fires represented 9% of tropical and subtropical net primary production (NPP). We found that including fire processes in the tropics substantially alters the seasonal cycle of net biome production by shifting carbon losses to months with low soil moisture and low rates of soil microbial respiration. Consequently, accounting for fires increases growing season net flux by ~12% between 38°N and 38°S, with the greatest effect occurring in highly productive savanna regions.  相似文献

To address the evolution and geographical diversification of the genus Zelkova (Ulmaceae) a phylogenetic analysis of morphological data and the sequences of the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were used. Cladistic analyses suggested that the Chinese species Z. schneideriana and Z. sinica are basal within Zelkova. The western Asian Z. carpinifolia either appears nested between the East Asian Z. schneideriana and Z. sinica and a clade formed by the Japanese Z. serrata and two Mediterranean species, Z. abelicea and Z. sicula (ITS), or forms a clade with Z. serrata that is sister to a clade Z. abelicea plus Z. sicula (morphology). Nucleotide data suggested that gene flow occurred between Z. schneideriana and Z. serrata, and Z. carpinifolia and a lineage ancestral to Z. abelicea/sicula. Character evolution in Zelkova appears to have gone from long leaves with numerous secondary veins, coarse to shallow teeth with blunt or slightly pointed apex and small stomata, to leaves that are either long or short with numerous or few secondary veins, coarse teeth with cuspidate or obtuse apex or conspicuously shallow teeth, and dimorphic stomata displaying ‘giant stomata’ surrounded by a ring of small stomata or uniform large stomata. These results are in agreement with fossil data. Early Cainozoic fossils attributed to Zelkova from North America and Central Asia closely resemble the modern Z. schneideriana and Z. carpinifolia. The genus could have originated in the northern Pacific area and migrated to Europe after the Turgai Strait was closed during the Late Oligocene. Geographical differentiation may have started with the isolation of Chinese populations (leading to modern Z. schneideriana and Z. sinica) from high‐latitude Eurasian (North American) populations. This widespread Early Cainozoic type may have diversified into the western Asian Z. carpinifolia and the more derived Japanese and Mediterranean species during the latest Cainozoic. The modern Japanese and European/western Asian species would have differentiated relatively late, while two locally endemic Mediterranean species are the result of the cooling and development of a Mediterranean climate belt in Europe during the Pleistocene. Fossils from the Miocene and Pliocene of Europe resemble modern Z. carpinifolia and Z. serrata. ABSTRACT Large numbers of coccidian oocysts belonging to the genus Isospora were obtained from the intestinal contents of 98 Carduelis atrata imported into Italy from South America during the months of August through December 1994. The oocysts are sub-spherical and average 21 × 20.3 μm (19.4–23.5 μm × 18.5–22 μm), have a bilayered wall, and an oval polar granule (rarely two). The sporocysts are elliptical and measure 18.8 μm × 10.3 μm (17.5–18.94 μm × 9.5–11.0 μm). The Stieda body protrudes slightly from the end of the sporocyst. A large sporocyst residuum is present, consisting of many granules that may be in a compact mass or scattered. Since this Isospora sp.does not resemble any other species of Isospora previously described from birds of the genus Carduelis , it has been named Isospora atrata n. sp. after the host. Disseminated asexual stages were found in mononuclear cells derived from formalin-fixed post mortem material, suggesting this coccidian may represent an Atoxoplasma -like parasite. Four coccidia-free Serinus canarius L. cohabitated for a long period (4 mo) with infected C. atrata but oocysts were never found in the stool of these birds.  相似文献

We studied phenology, staging time and refuelling in Broad-billed Sandpipers Limicola falcinellus stopping over during spring migration in the Sivash (Black Sea, Ukraine) in May 1991–94. In the study area, peak staging numbers of 2000–2500 individuals occurred in the third week of May. In May 1993, 460 birds were marked with a yellow dye and 126 of these were colour-ringed. Before 28 May no departure of birds dyed yellow could be detected; by 3 June all birds had departed. Colour-ringed adults in mid May 1993 staged for a minimum of 8.2 days. After the observed departure of large flocks (24 May and later) the staging time of colour-ringed birds decreased significantly with body mass at the time of capture. Of birds mist-netted in 1991–94, 99.3% were in full summer plumage and 89% were adults. In second-year birds, fuel deposition rate (measured between individuals) was 0.44 g/day. In adults caught from early May to 24 May, overall fuel deposition rate was 1.04 g/day (3.4% of lean body mass). Mean adult body mass in early May was 34.8 g, increasing to 45.5 g after 24 May. Estimated body mass at departure was 51 g. Departure body mass and flight range estimates suggest that although birds refuelled quickly, fuel loads are only just sufficient for an unbroken flight to Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula. We suggest that Broad-billed Sandpipers use the Sivash as a crucial final take-off stopover site, and that they follow a 'jumping' migration strategy, performed under narrow time constraints.  相似文献

A massive enlargement of the gill surface proved to be an important factor in the hypoxia survival of young cichlids. Because the heads of cichlids are densely packed with structures related to both feeding and breathing, we hypothesized that the extra space needed for gill enlargement requires such large structural reorganizations that outer head shape is affected. We used a three-dimensional model to describe changes in the outer head shape of cichlids. Broods of cichlids of different phylogenetic lineages, habitats, and trophic specialization were split and raised at either 10% or 80–90% air saturation. Despite the above-mentioned differences between the species that were used, all hypoxia raised groups showed similar volume enlargements. Volume increases were most prominent in the ventral suspensorial and ventral opercular subcompartments. A relation with the enlarged gills of hypoxia raised fish is likely because the gills are mainly located in these compartments. The differences in ventral width correspond to those found in other studies comprising a wide variety of genotypic and phenotypic variations.
