Inbreeding is expected to increase the variability in size and shape within populations. The distinct effects of inbreeding on size and shape suggest that they are governed by different developmental pathways. One unresolved question is whether the non‐allometric shape component is partially unconstrained developmentally and therefore whether shape is evolvable. In the present study, we utilized a mass outbred population of Drosophila melanogaster maintained at standard laboratory conditions. Eight lines with equivalent expected levels of inbreeding (F ≈ 0.67) were obtained by restricting the size of each population to two pairs for nine generations. Nine landmarks were measured on Drosophila wings of the inbreed lines and compared with those of the mass population. Wing landmarks comprise an excellent model system for studying evolution of size and shape. Landmark measurements were analyzed with a Procrustes generalized least squares procedure. To visualize global shape changes among samples, we reconstructed the mean shape and the shape changes related to both the allometric and non‐allometric components. An increased variability in the non‐allometric shape component was found with inbreeding. Root tip mitotic and tapetal polytene cells ofVigna unguiculataandPhaseolus coccineus were hybridized with a ribosomal DNA(rDNA) probe. While the number of rDNA sites were as expectedforP. coccineus, it was surprisingly higher inV. unguiculatawhere ten rDNA sites were found in both tissues. A sequentialbanding technique on mitotic chromosomes ofV. unguiculata wasused to map the positions of the rDNA sites more accurately.In mitotic cells eight of the rDNA hybridization sites weresimilar in size while the remaining sites were smaller. In contrast,the hybridization sites were more variable in size in polytenecells with no more than six sites being relatively large. Thedifferences in size of the hybridization sites between the twotissues suggest differential amplification of the rDNA sequences.InP. coccineus six hybridization sites were found in both tissuetypes. The relative sizes of the sites were similar in bothtissue. Phenotypic differentiation of two tetraploid (2n = 4x = 36, 36+1B, 36+2B) populations of Santolina rosmarinifolia geographically isolated from diploid populations was investigated. The karyotype was relatively homogeneous, meiosis was regular and pollen was fertile in both cytotypes. An autopolyploid or allopolyploid origin for tetraploid cytotypes is discussed. Overall, 80.82% of all variance in achene weight, time t0, t50 and t90 of germination and accumulated germination rate was due to achene age at each ploidy level. Partition of the total phenotypic variance showed that there was extensive variation between ploidy levels. The mean of morphological characters was generally higher in polyploids. For diploid cytotypes, flower number, achene production and fruiting percentage were significantly higher than for tetraploid cytotypes. Cluster analysis indicated that the patterns of seedling morphology and development were similar in three diploid individuals and several tetraploids; the same analysis showed high similarity between diploid individuals of the natural populations, whereas tetraploid individuals showed high dissimilarity among themselves and with diploid individuals. Multiple correspondence analysis and logistic regression analysis indicated that qualitative characters contribute strongly to cytotype differentiation. Karyotypes were analysed in 113 populations of 34 species of Rhynchospora (Cyperaceae). They showed typical holocentric chromosomes lacking primary constrictions. Nucleolar constrictions were observed in the terminal regions of a few chromosomes (except in R. nanuzae , in which they were interstitial). The chromosome numbers varied between 2 = 4 and 2n = 50. The primary base number seems to be x = 5; x = 6 and x = 9 are secondary. Dysploidy occurred at low frequency, whereas polyploidy seemed to be the predominant event in the karyotype evolution of the genus. Karyotypic differences were found in R. consanguinea var. speciosa and R. consanguinea var. rigida and the closely related R. emaciata, R. riparia and R. tenuis from section Tenues. On the other hand, karyotypic similarities occurred among sections Valderugosae, Marisculae, Stenophylku and Cemuae.  相似文献
