Literature which debates the degree of liberation or oppression associated with wearing the hijab is frequently focused on the Middle East. Two strands of feminist writing have either condemned the veil as oppressive or reframed it as liberating and as a sign of resistance. I argue that the significance of wearing the hijab in Britain is frequently missed. In Britain far from being a sign of conformity and fulfilling the function of making the wearer invisible the converse is true. The hijab is, of itself, neither liberating nor oppressive; the power relations invested in it are situational and contextual. The white Muslim women who participated in this study experience various kinds of responses from non-Muslims. At times they find themselves on the receiving end of what amounts to racial abuse. In this article I suggest that although neither “race” nor racism are fixed, they tend, nevertheless, to shift as reinventions of the same phenomena.  相似文献

Closely integrated research between archaeologists and ecologists provides a long-term view of human land use that is rare in the ecological literature, allowing for investigation of activities that lead to enduring environmental outcomes. This extended temporal perspective is particularly important in aridlands where succession occurs slowly and ecosystem processes are mediated by abiotic, geomorphic factors. Numerous studies show that impacts from ancient human actions can persist, but few have explored the types of practices or mechanisms that lead to either transient or long-term environmental change. We compared plant and soil properties and processes from a range of landscape patch types in the Sonoran Desert of the US Southwest that supported different, well-documented prehistoric farming practices from AD 750–1300. Our results show that the types of ancient human activities that leave long-term ecological legacies in aridlands are those that fundamentally alter “slow variables” such as soil properties that regulate the timing and supply of water. Prehistoric Hohokam floodwater-irrigation practices, but not dryland farming techniques, substantially altered soil texture, which was strongly associated with desert plant community and functional composition. However, prehistoric agriculture did not consistently alter long-term nutrient availability and thus had no impact on “fast variables” such as production of seasonal annual plants that are restricted to periods of ample rainfall. In this arid ecosystem, the inverse texture model explained patterns in plant functional composition at large scales, but is less predictive of production of short-lived desert annuals that experience a more mesic precipitation regime.  相似文献

  • The domestic sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. ‘Giganteus’) has been used since the 19th century as a model plant for the study of seedling development in darkness and white light (WL) (scoto‐ versus photomorphogenesis). However, most pertinent studies have focused on the developmental patterns of the hypocotyl and cotyledons, whereas the root system has been largely ignored.
  • In this study, we analysed entire sunflower seedlings (root and shoot) and quantified organ development in the above‐ and belowground parts of the organism under natural (non‐sterile) conditions.
  • We document that seedlings, raised in moist vermiculite, are covered with methylobacteria, microbes that are known to promote root development in Arabidopsis. Quantitative data revealed that during photomorphogenesis in WL, the root system expands by 90%, whereas stem elongation is inhibited, and hook opening/cotyledon expansion occurs. Root morphogenesis may be mediated via imported sucrose provided by the green, photosynthetically active cotyledons. This hypothesis is supported by the documented effect of sucrose on the induction of lateral root initials in sunflower cuttings. Under these experimental conditions, phytohormones (auxin, cytokinin, brassinolide) exerted little effect on root and cotyledon expansion, and no hormone‐induced initiation of lateral roots was observed.
  • It is concluded that sucrose not only acts as an energy source to fuel cell metabolism but is also a shoot‐derived signalling molecule that triggers root morphogenesis.

The effect of ethanol on the transport of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in freshly isolated hepatocytes in vitro resulted in about a 30% increase in accumulation of substrate. It was shown that this was not due to differences in metabolism, nor to an inhibition of efflux. Preincubation with 40 mm ethanol for 45 min resulted in a significantly increased rate of entry of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate into the cells. The stimulatory effect was specific to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate since ethanol inhibited uptake of folate and methotrexate. The increased uptake was due to metabolism of ethanol as shown by studies with pyrazole. Also, the n-alkanols, propanol through pentanol, and sorbitol but not methanol were stimulatory. Anaerobiosis and sodium azide stimulated uptake of 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate but were inhibitory to methotrexate uptake. These data, taken together, suggest that the ethanol effect is due to increased entry of 5-CH3-H4PteGlu into the cells possibly as the result of an increased cellular NADHNAD ratio.  相似文献

The host ranges of plant pathogens and herbivores are phylogenetically constrained, so that closely related plant species are more likely to share pests and pathogens. Here we conducted a reanalysis of data from published experimental studies to test whether the severity of host-enemy interactions follows a similar phylogenetic signal. The impact of herbivores and pathogens on their host plants declined steadily with phylogenetic distance from the most severely affected focal hosts. The steepness of this phylogenetic signal was similar to that previously measured for binary-response host ranges. Enemy behavior and development showed similar, but weaker phylogenetic signal, with oviposition and growth rates declining with evolutionary distance from optimal hosts. Phylogenetic distance is an informative surrogate for estimating the likely impacts of a pest or pathogen on potential plant hosts, and may be particularly useful in early assessing risk from emergent plant pests, where critical decisions must be made with incomplete host records.  相似文献

The diphenyl ether acifluorfen enhances the blue light-induced absorbance change in Triton X100-solubilized crude membrane preparations from etiolated oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Lodi) coleoptiles. Enhancement of the spectral change is correlated with a change in rate of dark reoxidation of a b-type cytochrome. Similar, although smaller, enhancement was obtained with oxyfluorfen, nitrofen, and bifenox. Light-minus-dark difference spectra in the presence and absence of acifluorfen, and the dithionite-reduced-minus oxidized difference spectrum indicate that acifluorfen is acting specifically at a blue light-sensitive cytochrome-flavin complex. Sodium azide, a flavin inhibitor, decreases the light-induced absorbance change significantly, but does not affect the dark reoxidation of the cytochrome. Hence, it is acting on the light reaction, suggesting that the photoreceptor itself is a flavin. Acifluorfen sensitizes phototropism in dark-grown oat seedlings such that the first positive response occurs with blue light fluences as little as one-third of those required to elicit the same response in seedlings grown in the absence of the herbicide. Both this increase in sensitivity to light and the enhancement of the light-induced cytochrome reduction vary with the applied acifluorfen concentration in a similar manner. The herbicide is without effect either on elongation or on the geotropic response of dark-grown oat seedlings, indicating that acifluorfen is acting specifically close to, or at the photoreceptor end of, the stimulus-response chain. It seems likely that the flavin-cytochrome complex serves to transduce the light signal into curvature in phototropism in oats, with the flavin moiety itself serving as the photoreceptor.  相似文献

Electrostatic surface potentials in the vestibule of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) were computed from structural models using the University of Houston Brownian Dynamics program to determine their effect on ion conduction and ionic selectivity. To further determine whether computed potentials accurately reflect the electrostatic environment of the channel, the potentials were used to predict the rate constants for diffusion-enhanced fluorescence energy transfer; the calculated energy transfer rates are directly comparable with those determined experimentally (see companion article by Meltzer et al. in this issue). To include any effects on the local potentials by the bound acceptor fluorophore crystal violet, its binding site was first localized within the pore by fluorescence energy transfer measurements from dansyl-C6-choline bound to the agonist sites and also by simulations of binding using Autodock. To compare the computed potentials with those determined experimentally, we used the predicted energy transfer rates from Tb3+ chelates of varying charge to calculate an expected potential using the Boltzmann relationship. This expected potential (from -20 to -40 mV) overestimates the values determined experimentally (from -10 to -25 mV) by two- to fourfold at similar conditions of ionic strength. Although the results indicate a basic discrepancy between experimental and computed surface potentials, both methods demonstrate that the vestibular potential has a relatively small effect on conduction and selectivity.  相似文献
