Treatment of mitochondria isolated from Texas male sterile cytoplasmcorn (T mitochondria) with high concentrations of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide(DCCD) (140 nmol DCCD mg–1 mitochondrial protein) completelyand immediately inhibited T mitochondrial swelling by Helminthosporiummaydis Race T toxin (HmT toxin). In order to obtain a specificinteraction between DCCD and the ATPase complex T mitochondriawere incubated with lower DCCD concentrations (1–5 nmolDCCD mg–1 mitochondrial protein) for up to 8 h at 4 °C.After 8 h incubation in the presence of 3.75 nmol DCCD mg–1mitochondrial protein, toxin-induced swelling was decreasedby 69%. Specificity of DCCD action upon the ATPase complex wasconfirmed by (1) SDS gel electrophoresis and fluorographic analysesof proteins from [14C]-DCCD-treated T mitochondria and immunoprecipitatesand (2) physiological experiments showing that DCCD exertednone of its other documented effects. These data suggest thatHmT toxin interacts with the ATPase complex of T mitochondriaeither at or near the DCCD-binding protein within the membranesector of the complex. The colour patterns of Heliconius butterflies are built up from an array of serially homologous pattern elements known as the nymphalid groundplan. An analysis of the phenotypic effects of ten genetic loci from H. melpomene and H. cydno reveals that each alters the expression either of a single element of the groundplan or of an entire row of serially homologous elements. Five of the ten loci affect the size (or presence/absence) of specific pattern elements, two affect the colour in which a pattern element is expressed, two affect pattern-inducing activity of the wing veins, and one appears to affect an overall threshold for pattern determination. Three of the ten loci have identical effects on homologues of the fore- and hindwing. We show that most of the apparently large and qualitative phenotypic effects of these genes can be readily explained by relatively small and quantitative changes in the dimensions or positions of specific pattern elements.  相似文献

Aluminium (Al) tolerance in an Al-tolerant cultivar of Phaseolusvulgaris L. (‘Dade’) was found to be an inducibletrait. Upon exposure to 10 µM Al, the rate of root elongationwas inhibited in comparison to controls. During the following72 h, the rate of elongation returned to levels comparable tocontrols. In contrast, root elongation of an Al-sensitive cultivar(‘Romano’) did not recover after exposure to Al.In Dade, the resumption of root elongation following exposureto Al was accompanied by increased rates of root respiration,whereas respiration rates slowly declined over the 72 h treatmentperiod in Romano. When partitioned into growth and maintenanceexpenditures, a larger proportion of root respiration of Dadeexposed to Al was allocated to maintenance processes, potentiallyreflecting diversion of energy to metabolic pathways that offsetthe adverse effects of Al toxicity. Romano did not show sucha pattern and respiration associated with both growth and maintenancewas reduced after exposure to Al. Root and shoot growth of bothcultivars were also measured to determine the effects of long-term(21 d) exposure to 10 µM Al. Dade plants exposed to Alexhibited enhanced growth in comparison to controls, whereasRomano plants were characterized by reduced shoot and root growth.Modelling the time-course of root respiration and measuringthe long-term growth responses to Al is a valuable method ofelucidating respiratory costs of stress tolerance. Abstract.
  • 1 Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have rarely been reported in insects and other invertebrates. The majority of those reported involve organisms where sexual transmission is augmented by either vertical (i.e. inherited) transmission, or horizontal transmission, independent of host sexual activity.
  • 2 We here demonstrate the existence of an STD in the coccinellid beetle Adalia bipunctata. This species bears a parasitic mite of the genus Coccipolipus. We show that, like many other podapolipid mites, this mite is transmitted between host individuals at a high rate during copulation. It also appears to be transmitted at a low rate between non-copulating individuals.
  • 3 We show that infected female A.bipunctata produced eggs at a reduced rate, and that the eggs produced by infected females have highly decreased viability. However, no effect of infection upon host longevity was observed.
  • 4 The results are discussed in relation to the incidences of sexually transmitted disease in invertebrates in general, the causes of disease symptoms, and the importance of this disease in the evolution of A.bipunctata.

Growth response of subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) to climate was studied across its local geographical and elevation range in the Olympic Mountains, Washington. A dendroecological analysis of subalpine fir across a range of elevations (1350-1850 m) and annual precipitation (125-350 cm y?1), was used to compare environmental factors affecting growth. Climate-growth relationships were explored using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients; partial correlation analysis was used to assess relationships among site chronologies and climatic variables. Radial growth is negatively correlated with winter precipitation at high elevation and wet sites, but not at low and middle elevation dry sites. Growth is positively correlated with current growing season temperature at all sites; however, growth is negatively correlated with previous year August temperature, indicating that climate affects growth in subsequent years. Positive correlations between growth and summer precipitation during the growing season at low and middle elevation dry sites suggest that soil moisture is partially limiting to growth on these sites. If the climate of the Pacific Northwest becomes warmer and drier, then subalpine fir growth may increase at high elevation and wet sites, but may decrease at lower elevation dry sites in the Olympic Mountains. However, the growth response of subalpine fir to potentially rapid climate change will not be uniform because subalpine fir grows over a wide range of topographic features, habitats, and local climates at different geographical scales. A comparison of growth response to current growing season temperature suggests that the temperature-related growth response of subalpine fir is not adequately described by the parabolic curve used in JABOWA-based models.  相似文献

Non-indigenous species (NIS) are increasingly conspicuous inmarine and estuarine habitats throughout the world, as the number,variety, and effects of these species continue to accrue. Mostof these NIS invasions result from anthropogenic dispersal.Although the relative importance of different dispersal mechanismsvaries both spatially and temporally, the global movement ofballast water by ships appears to be the largest single vectorfor NIS transfer today, andmany recent invasions have resultedfrom this transfer. The rate of new invasions may have increasedin recent decades, perhaps due to changes in ballast water transport.Estuaries have been especially common sites of invasions, accumulatingfrom tens to hundreds of NIS per estuary that include most majortaxonomic and trophic groups. We now know of approximately 400NIS along the Pacific, Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the U.S.,and hundreds of marine and estuarine NIS are reported from otherregions of the world. Although available information about invasionsis limited to a few regions and underestimates the actual numberof NIS invasions, there are apparent differences in the frequencyof NIS among sites. Mechanisms responsible for observed patternsamong sites likely include variation in supply of NIS, and perhapsvariation in properties of recipient or donor communities,butthe role of these mechanisms has not been tested. Although ourpresent knowledge about the extent, patterns and mechanismsof marine invasions is still in its infancy, it is clear thatNIS are a significant force of change in marine and especiallyestuarine communities globally. Taxonomically diverse NIS arehaving significant effects on many, if not most, estuaries thatfundamentally alter population, community, and ecosystems processes.The impacts of most NIS remain unknown, and the predictabilityof their direct and indirect effects remains uncertain. Nonetheless,based upon the documented extent of NIS invasions and scopeof then effects, studies of marine communities that do not includeNIS are increasingly incomplete  相似文献

Removing virus-infected plants from plots of Majestic potatoes at Rothamsted on 2 July 1947 did not reduce the spread of leaf roll but reduced rugose mosaic (potato virus Y) to about one-fifth of that in plots rogued on 21 July or left unrogued. Roguing Arran Pilot potatoes on 16 June or 2 July reduced leaf roll to five-sixths of that in unrogued plots; roguing on 16 June reduced rugose mosaic to about half that in plots rogued on 2 July, and about a quarter of that in unrogued plots. Lifting Arran Pilot potatoes in mid-August reduced virus diseases to about two-thirds.
Roguing flattened the gradient (decrease in percentage plants diseased with increasing distance from the source of infection) with rugose mosaic, but had little effect with leaf roll. Evidently any plants prevented by roguing from contracting virus Y were near the initially infected plants.
In 1948, Majestic and King Edward potatoes at three places were rogued during 22–24 June and tubers were dug during 28–30 July and again at the end of the season. Leaf roll spread more in Majestic than in King Edward, and rugose mosaic spread more in King Edward. Roguing reduced the spread of both by about one-fifth at Rothamsted, but had no effect at Sutton Bonington. At Bretton, in the Derbyshire hills, roguing had no effect on leaf roll, but prevented the spread of rugose mosaic.
The small benefit occasionally achieved by roguing in the ware-growing districts of England does not make the practice economically worth while.  相似文献

Data are presented which show, when stomatal control is eliminated,that wheat leaves may lose 5–6 per cent. and Pelargoniumleaves 10–12 per cent. of their water without any reductionin the transpiration rate. Experiments in which Pelargonium and wheat leaves, with stomatalcontrol present, were submitted to cycles of changing watercontent also failed to establish any direct relation betweentranspiration rate and leaf water content. It is concluded that leaf water content over the range of 70–100per cent. of that present in the turgid state has no significanteffect in determining the rate of water loss from leaves. A repetition of Knight's experiment showed that stomata openedin still air and closed in moving air. This was not recordedby Knight, who used a porometer cup permanently attached tothe leaf. It is concluded that the higher transpiration raterecorded by Knight after a period of still air was due to widerstomatal aperture and not to the higher leaf water content assuggested by him.  相似文献
